Peep Toe Booties!

As you know I’m quite partial to a pair of ankle boots. Given the warm temperatures here it is really hard to justify another pair (not to mention the fact I already have more pairs than a girl can wear in the deepest, longest winter!). Peep toe booties though, well they are quite another thing entirely. I happened to be in Nordstrom on Friday returning some items when lo and behold I noticed their shoe sale had started. They had a single pair of these left on the rack. The Sam Edelman Asher – reduced by 40% here.

I actually tried an 8 instead of my usual 8.5 and it fits great – possibly because they are peep toe. Don’t let the height scare you either – they are ridiculously comfortable.

They are also available in a beautiful wine color here.

And grey here.

These are stunning too and Amazon currently have 20% off for Veterans Day – these are very Emmanuelle Alt – I can see her wearing these with a pair of cropped kick flare jeans and a white shirt. The Sam Edelman Abbie boot.

Don’t forget in the UK the Carine Roitfeld collection launched last week – the jackets are stunning – especially the fur bomber jackets but they do fit small.

Today this photo we have all seen many times was my source of inspiration. All hail the amazing Ms. Alt.

And though I had my heels ready to wear today, after a run yesterday evening, my knees begged me to wear sneakers today.

These khaki utility harems are wonderful but sadly are from Zara last year. But fear not I have found some great alternatives that will allow you to play around with the khaki color trend, while taking you into summer.

These culottes are gorgeous and can be dressed down with sneakers and a black or white tee.

khaki culottesMany of my blogging friends have and love these TopShop distressed utility pants – I love the fit having tried them on the other day in our new store. Again they are great for dressing up or down with sneakers or heels.

relaxed utilityIf you prefer a bit more drape these wrap front joggers are gorgeous.

TopShop joggersA cheaper alternative are these joggers from New Look. At just $36 they are a bargain!

New look joggerI love this pair from Warehouse – a gorgeous drapey fabric and a little dressier than the New Look pair.

WarehouseThese are probably the closest in style that I have found to mine – but with less of a dropped crotch, so I know many of you will prefer these. They have 3% elastane so will have a nice stretch to them

Asos taperedIf you prefer more of a utility trouser here is a great alternative to the distressed TopShop pair.

Asos utilityNow don’t style them like this but these culottes are actually cord so also give a nod to the 70s trend. They are lovely and will be perfect with sandals too in the summer.

Asos culottesFinally if you’re somewhere like Atlanta, where temperatures are already rising, try this linen pair. Gorgeous with a crisp white shirt as shown here, and just $40.

As for my jacket – well I think it might turn into one of those items that many bloggers own – it is gorgeous and I love the cut at the back too. It’s going to be really versatile with jeans and trousers. I am wearing a Large.

ZaraThere you go – now you are all set to work your Emmanuelle inspired looks too!

An ode to Emmanuelle – again…

I have spent many evenings on Pinterest searching, pinning and ogling at her image…yes I think I could almost be classified as obsessed with her – ‘her’ being Emmanuelle Alt, the Editor of Vogue Paris. No matter how many times I see her image I just melt and think how easy she makes looking fabulous. She definitely has a formula but the pieces she wears are always simple and understated.

A jacket is a must – whether it be a fur, military style or simple blazer. Rarely seen in skirts she relies on ankle length jeans, harems and occasionally flares. Her shoes are always fabulous – simple courts, flat booties, over the knee boots or (currently what I am most obsessed by) lace or mesh booties – often peep toes. All paired with a simple tee or white shirt and a classic belt. Now why can’t I get it right?

Personally I think my love of clothes i.e. having too many clothes…means that I overcomplicate outfits, either to a) wear items that have been neglected or b) just by over-thinking an outfit. I have a substitute for everything she wears (no surprise), so my challenge over the next few weeks is to just take it easy, breathe, and relax, and then transform myself into an elegant, effortlessly stylish Parisian 😉

Oh and if anyone spots some wicked lace booties holler! These are the closest I’ve found…I love them, but they look super high for tottering across the Place de la Concorde.

Meanwhile back to reality here is what I have been wearing over the past couple of days. It’s blazing hot in Atlanta – how can it be 70 degrees on December 2nd? I’m not happy – a girl has furs and big coats to wear!

Kids, who’d have ’em?

In previous years, when the children have been in daycare in the days running up to Thanksgiving, the Husband and I have taken advantage of the the child free time and headed out for some indulgent lunches.  Now both of them are out of school for the whole Thanksgiving week so we go out for a few family meals instead – just as much fun – but a different type of fun;)  Yesterday my Husband surprised me by planning a lovely posh lunch for him and I on the kids’ last day at school.  I was SO excited!  We were just about to head out of the door when the phone rang – I could see it was school.  Dilemma – run for it and pretend you didn’t see or hear it – or pick it up in case it was a life or death emergency.  As any parent would (though I did pause for a second) we picked up and Hugh was sick:(  Dang!  Lunch out postponed to collect a poor wee boy from school with an apparent ear infection.  Of course once at home he proceeded to run wildly around the house with no apparent illness, ache or pain, though he is on antibiotics now:(

So today marks the first day of our Thanksgiving Holiday and we’re off to choose bikes for them both.  Santa has sent Mum and Dad a letter telling us that we have to help Poppy and Hugh choose, as he is worried about space in his sleigh this year…:)  I can’t wait to see the looks on their faces when we tell them where we are going!

In the meantime here is what Mom has been wearing this week.  Starting with yesterday – I was trying to channel Emmanuelle Alt by wearing a collar, and I originally had on a black tuxedo jacket for the lunch-that-didn’t-happen instead of this fabulous cardigan.  I will just harp on for a moment about these Mango jeans – I’ve had lots of compliments which surprised me as they are not for everyone, and they are super comfortable – lots of stretch in the denim and pleather.  In fact these blue denim ones fit a tad looser than the black denim ones I have.  These are a US 6 and I would say fit true to size.

And here was a major fail on Wednesday – not really sure what look I was trying to create – but I really did end up looking like a baby in a babygrow – I think the pink fluffy cardigan took it a step too far:)  Individually I love all the items but together they certainly did not create the fashion forward look I had envisioned in my head.  Ah well – we can laugh and try again:)

It’s a grey, damp day here today so it maybe a day for the cashmere onesie again🙂

Inspiration from an icon.

There are several style icons around the globe who inspire me, but the woman who makes me weak at the knees with her effortless chic and je ne sais quoi is Emmanuelle AltWikipedia says she was born May 18th 1967 which is interesting not only because my daughter’s birthday is May 18th but also because she’s heading for her 46th birthday this year!  She looks phenomenal at 46!

Her uniform is pretty standard fare – if you ignore the fact that it is compiled of designer pieces – you’ll recognize plenty of Isabel Marant when you look at photos.  You’ll often see her in a blazer, t-shirt, skinnies or harem trousers with pointy pumps or ankle boots.  Regardless of what she wears – it somehow always looks amazing and also looks like she hasn’t given her wardrobe that day a second thought.  She has a formula and she sticks by it.  If you saw a headless shot of her you’d be able to tell who it is instantly.

I think blogging is starting to make me over think what I wear, leading to some dubious decisions and combinations.  It’s time to pare back and simplify.  So here is my attempt at jeans, t-shirt and a blazer.  I actually feel really comfortable like this and it’s one of MM’s favorite looks on me.  InStyle magazine also dedicate a page this month to the blazer and jeans look – so I must be on to something.

IMG_4070

The blazer is Zara from last summer – it’s hard to see the detail but it doesn’t have lapels – I love it – it has great strong shoulders!  The t-shirt was a tenner from Target and is probably suitable for Valentine’s Day and the earrings were cheap as chips from Forever 21🙂  The jeans are Gap grey jeggings and the Carlsen boots were $40 from Steve Madden about three years ago, and I think look very Marant.  Oh the irony, given I didn’t choose the only Isabel Marant I own – my Dicker boots.

On my wrist I decided to add a bit of embellishment to my standard Elsa Peretti open heart bracelet.

So go on then – who is your style icon?

Day to night in burgundy.

Call it oxblood, bordeaux or wine, burgundy is the color of Fall 2012.  It’s everywhere from scarves to boots to jeans.  I love the color and even have hair to match:)  At first I bought a couple of burgundy accessories not wanting to overdo it, but now I have jeans, boots and t-shirts all in burgundy.  It’s even made me hunt out my Chanel Rouge Noir nail polish again, which Uma Thurman made famous in Pulp Fiction.

To demonstrate the versatility of this fabulous, rich color I teamed up with my great blogging buddies – Avril from SchoolGateStyle.com and Fiona from Avenue57 – to style a daytime and evening look in our burgundy jeans.  Our jeans are all different brands and mine are Zara.  They were a steal for $35.90 and have lots of stretch so a really comfy.  On trend, as ever, Zara has a lot of items right now in what they are calling ‘bordeaux’.

My daytime look is VERY casual.  I love wearing burgundy with grey so paired the jeans with my AllSaints decay sweatshirt from 2011.  The scarf is an old H&M that I bought after being inspired by Emmanuelle Alt – swoon – my ultimate style icon – I just love her – we can all dream hey?  The sneakers are my new Ash Alex wedges – pretty much a knock off of the Marant sneakers – but I love the burgundy and coral together – which influenced me to wear my orange Casio G-Shock watch.

I LOVE how the three of us styled the jeans so differently – it’s so exciting to see how different people interpret different pieces.

For evening wear I think I was mainly inspired by my Halloween decorations:)  My AllSaints embellished top is remarkably similar to the ghost hanging next to me!  The jacket is the chic leather biker jacket from Boden that I bought in the sale last season and is now getting worn frequently.  The only thing I might change about the outfit are the shoes – here I have the Sam Edelman Petty boots in British Burgundy – I thought the continuation of color might work but having seen the photos they look too matchy matchy.  Heels would have elongated the look better – ah well – next time!

Fiona and Avril look great – all legs!  Make sure you pop over to their blogs for more details on their outfits here at Avenue57 and here at SchoolGateStyle.com.

I love how the burgundy works with grey and black – it’s fabulous for adding a splash of color and will work great for the festive season.  But it also works as a neutral base color and pairs well with other colors, like coral, and patterns – experiment with it!  How are you wearing your burgundy this season?
