Countdown to Turkey!

It’s all a bit crazy here! Visas are sorted, passports are found and bags are out ready to be packed! I spent bloody hours figuring out movies for the kids yesterday and making sure they were all synced on iPads for the plane. I guarantee we will get on the flight and they won’t play or will have disappeared – it always happens no matter how often I check. Anyhow hopefully they’ll be out like a light as soon as they are settled in their seats as it’s a late flight. I’ll of course be enjoying all the services offered!

Save vs. Splurge – Chloe Wedge Espadrilles

This season my new obsession is espadrilles. I’ve bought a couple of pairs of Castañers here in the sale – you can see them in the image below. I’ve also been eyeing the Chloe wedge sandal. It’s beautiful, leg lengthening and surprisingly comfortable given the height. The platform makes them lust worthy for me – I adore a great platform! Even at $625 they sold out quickly most places. Fortunately Zappos/Amazon have restocked the Marc Fisher tribute – and at just $160 – you can get the black and the natural for less than the Chloes!

I do love a good dress

A dress can be the easiest thing to throw on – and when you get it right it can be a killer outfit! I love a dress and my closet is now diversifying from the AllSaints drapes that I adore. Of course heading to Turkey next week gives me the excuse to buy dresses – they feel more conservative and appropriate in Istanbul – even a strappy sundress can be adapted for a mosque with a scarf over the shoulders.

I have this Gap dress in pink and adore it – I’ve just ordered the blue with code TGIF in the US – I have a large – it’s cut quite narrow around the bust so be careful if you are well endowed. Oh and I can’t stand the belt so have immediately discarded it!

Gap

& Other Stories are fabulous for unusual prints and they have their sale running right now. There are some dresses from a couple of seasons ago that I have ordered.

Many of my friends have the porcelain midi dress – I’ve ordered this style – I’m really starting to embrace blue. It’s reduced from $115 to $58.

porcelain

The Mountain print dress is pretty polarizing but I think it will look amazing with a tan and black espadrilles. This is reduced from $90 to $45.

moutain print

Finally in the sale – a dress I see wearing a lot in the Fall with ankle boots – I’ve been desperate for another plaid dress and love the length of this one. Reduced from $115 to $58.

There is 25% off certain footwear and dresses at Madewell this weekend with code UNIFORM. I’ve ordered these for my vacation closet. Size down in the dress.

My Husband made me do it!

My Husband is never one to say I need more of anything. He knows I need no encouragement. However he just sent me a link to these saying ‘they are very you’.848502_400_E_PREM

Oh yes they are!! I had a pair of Nike Rift years ago – they have the toe thingy – yup just like a camel toe 😉 These are now on their way to me for vacation.

I have indeed got plenty of shoes for Turkey – these just arrived and I bloody love them – they make me feel super sexy but they are so comfortable for Istanbul nights! I am now the proud owner of a pair of Castaner espadrilles!

Now for a prime example of something that I loved but did not love me. I so wanted this jersey skirt to work but I felt and looked enormous in it – it did nothing for my shape so back it went.

Finishing with a couple of outfits from earlier in the week.

The skirt didn’t work but I still bloody love the TopShop pleated trousers. Oh and the TopShop Karter loafers are back in stock in gold, pink and now silver here!

What happened in TopShop today…

This morning I headed to the mall, feeling extremely virtuous as I was returning items to TopShop and Zara. Great, I thought, all those dollars that I didn’t need to spend back in my wallet for vacation! #epicfail

As I was walking out of TopShop these caught my eye.Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 9.46.55 PM Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 9.47.11 PM

They are ‘pleat trousers’ and I LOVE them. Really fluid, with an elastic waistband – these are a US 8/UK 12 in blush and grey. I can’t see the grey/silver online but I have just ordered them in red too and I am contemplating the gold. Perfect worn with a simple tee and sneakers or heels and a delicate cami.

In blush – that I have tried and purchased above

In nude – though online they don’t look any different from the blush above…

Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 9.38.40 PM

In navy, which I just love with the loafers here

Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 9.38.14 PM

And khaki – these will be superb with a white tank and sneakers and a tan! Can I justify these too?

Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 9.37.52 PM

Next I saw this beautiful pleated jersey skirt. Now the fact it is jersey makes it incredibly comfortable and this also has an elastic waistband. I would say it is generous too – this is a UK 12 US 8. They must have just been put out as they were all creased so I have ordered online here.

Screen Shot 2016-06-09 at 9.47.20 PM

It also comes in a beautiful blush and red. Perfect again with sneakers or slides and a t-shirt to dress it down a little. You don’t want to end up looking like my Latin teacher.

This is the pale blue I am trying on above.

So the moral of the story is, when returning items in store wear blinkers (blinders for the US!) else you’ll spend more than you returned 😉

Summer makeup

In the summer I rarely wear foundation – it’s just too cakey and hot and I end up feeling like my skin cannot breathe. I do still love applying my makeup though – it makes me feel ‘put together’ before venturing out. This year, thanks to the recommendation of a friend, I have tried a couple of new products. I love them! Now I am no beauty blogger, and no expert but I know what I like. Both these foundations give a wonderful, barely there glow to my skin with very light coverage, but both act as a perfect base.

The first is super indulgent – but it comes in a large pot, and using a stipple brush to apply it I hardly make a dent in it – it will last ages! It also looks gorgeous on my vanity – who doesn’t want to see the Chanel Cs each morning? Meet Soleil Tan de Chanel bronzing makeup base.

chanel

The Nordstrom site describes it here as “The velvety finish of this light cream-gel bronzer leaves your skin with a beautiful sun-bathed look. Wear it on its own, or for a hint of outdoors radiance, over or under your favorite CHANEL foundation.”

It is lovely and creamy and as I say, applied with a stippling brush it leaves a beautiful radiant base. I am a convert!

Next is the new Clinique Chubby in the Nude foundation stick at a more palatable price. I haven’t bought Clinique for years but this has me back at their counter in a hurry. Again it is super lightweight and can be applied from the stick or using a stipple brush – I tend to dab it on then use the brush to blend it. I was matched with the vanilla shade and it is perfect for carrying on vacation and dropping in a handbag. It came as another recommendation – our makeup conversation became expensive 😉

chubbynude_shopthead_bg

While at the Clinique counter I also bought the Stay-Matte Sheer Pressed Powder. My nose is always shiny and I figured if I am going to spend money on a foundation then I should at least seal it with a powder. This is beautiful and does as it says – all day in the humidity I have had no shine, with just one additional application in the afternoon.

Screen Shot 2016-06-08 at 11.19.05 AM

I then nipped across the mall to Sephora just to buy their Bright Future Gel Serum concealer – having bought Nars concealer before the Sephora own brand is an equal at a far cheaper price. I use it just to conceal dark circles and redness around my nose.

Screen Shot 2016-06-08 at 11.32.55 AM

Whilst in Sephora I discovered these Bright Future Color Correctors and gave them a try. I absolutely love the yellow one which ‘combats dullness’ – I just apply it in dots on my lower eye socket – or the highest point of my cheek bone and blend it by dabbing with my fingers – it really does work – I love it. Green neutralizes redness, and then there are three shades for skin brightening.

So there we go – with eyeliner, waterproof mascara and lippy I’m good to go all summer!

Today I am in the office wearing an new top and an new bra (see previous post!) 😉

The most perfect summer bras!

I have been unfaithful. Each year I replenish some of my underwear and trash the grotty grey stuff with pulls and stretched elastic. It’s wonderful to see all of it in the trash and my underwear drawer full of beautiful bright whites! As a true Brit I have always bought my underwear from M&S – since I was wearing big navy knickers and knee socks, till now. This summer I have strayed.

I have big boobs and I cannot lie…yup 36/38 D. I do, however, struggle with padded bras as I find they just add to the size! In the summer here in 90 degrees the last thing you want is an uncomfortable underwired bra collecting sweat under your boobage! Even with my assets I do love a bralette – don’t guffaw all at once – the ones I have have enough gentle support and are so pretty and yes they are XL. I would never suggest running or playing volleyball wearing them, but under a lovely strappy summer dress they are PERFECT!

This year I have bought a few racerback dresses and the kids were appalled at the nipples without a bra – so I compromised for them and found two beautiful designs at Target – and guess what – they are just $12 each!

The first is the Xhilaration lace racer back bralette. It comes in black, white, peach, silver (yes it’s meant to be grey!) and peach. I have bought all colors in XL and they fit beautifully – they are so pretty!

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 7.37.10 PM Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 7.37.18 PM

The next is actually slightly padded – but the genius is it is a front fastening t-shirt bra – no struggling to get it on. I can honestly say it is possibly the best fitting bra I have ever worn – for some reason the racer back straps at the front are so more flattering as they don’t dig in. Again just $12 and I have the 36 D.

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 7.38.06 PM

How gorgeous is the back!?

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 7.37.59 PM

Of course there is also the regular bralette, also $12.

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 7.38.49 PM Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 7.38.55 PM

Finally for all those off the shoulder tops and dresses my favorite solution is a bandeau. Enough support and rarely needs adjusting. These are $12.99.

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 7.39.50 PM Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 7.39.57 PM

Oh and these gorgeous panties are currently 5 for $20. You can’t go wrong!

Screen Shot 2016-06-07 at 8.00.11 PM

So there you go – I have comfortable bras and my kids don’t have to fear me in a sundress!

Vacation planning

In 3 weeks time we’ll be back in Istanbul! We have a week in the city before heading to the coast where we are staying in a house on the beach for 3 weeks. I am already panicking about what to pack!

I love to get ‘dressed up’ when we’re in Istanbul – we don’t go anywhere too ‘fancy’ but this year we have said we may visit SoHo House for roof top cocktails. When we get to the beach I live in swimwear and denim shorts – so that is pretty easy – though this year we are staying a bit more out of the way, so I need to be cognizant of cultural norms and not head out wearing my sheer, see through dress…no I don’t have one!

I have to say I am completely smitten with Gap this year. I have bought more from them than any other year – hopefully I’ll pull them through their tough times they are currently experiencing! Over the weekend I ordered the following to throw in my case. In the US there is currently 40% off with code MONDAY.

I absolutely love a romper for the beach – we are literally right on the beach this year so this will be ideal for heading up back to the house for a cocktail. I can throw it on over my bikini after a tough day on the sand.

scoop neck romper

This maxi dress is gorgeous for Istanbul – I can throw a scarf around my shoulders when I need to show a little respect in certain areas or when visiting a mosque, and then it’s perfect for roof top cocktails listening to the call to prayer.

maxi dress

These soft spun dresses are currently reduced and the 40% off can still be applied. I adore them. Perfect for sightseeing – beautifully cool when being dragged walking around ancient ruins in the blistering heat!

yellow racerback coral racerback

I love the colour of this linen dress – again perfect for day to night in Istanbul with a pair of espadrilles.

Gap linen dress

Now with denim shorts I love to wear a lovely lacy, pretty top. Mango is always my destination for blouses as they are more generous across the bust and go up to a US 10 in most cases.

This is so pretty  – I love a collar.

embroidered blouse

I have a similar embroidered blouse to this one that I love to wear with jeans under a jacket in the spring and fall so it is really versatile.

embroidered blouse 1

This in pink is gorgeous – I have bought this – it is such and unusual shade – normally tops are ecru or black and that’s it! It will look stunning with black or grey jeans at home too.

pink blouse

Ok I made a joke about sheer dresses but this sheer blouse is beautiful over a cami and has sleeves so provides a little more modesty.

sheer blouse

As always I will pack too much, wear 1/3 of it and get complaints from the rest of the family about the weight of my bag. I will never be a capsule packer! What about all those ‘just in case’ situations! 😉

As for the past week I feel I’ve been busier than ever with the kids out of school – the morning disappears when they are at camp and then I take them to the pool which requires an hour of preparation finding swimsuits, towels, lost goggles, spf and enough snacks to feed an army. On Friday I thought I’d cracked it then turned up at the pool without my own bikini bottoms – damn!
