Stubborn as a…

…Mule – only we’re talking about the trend for the flat leather variety that seems to be with us to stay in 2016, not the ass.

15 years ago, one of my first purchases on this side of the Atlantic, was a pair of Kenneth Cole leather, flat mules. I LOVED them. They were cheap as chips from a shoe outlet, beautiful leather, and the perfect shoe for my new US ‘business casual’ attire. They hid the toes in the absence of a pedicure, yet were cool enough to wear in the heat here. I have to say I am rather pleased that they are back on trend.

My favorite pair are these from Rag & Bone. I have some Net-a-porter.com credit to use and once I’ve returned from my UK trip I’ve a feeling these may be ordered. I adore the suede and leather combination.

Rag and Bone

This croc effect shoe from Robert Clergerie is gorgeous, and similar to those in one of the images from Pinterest. Much more masculine than the Rag & Bone mule.

The Pierre Hardy mule in tan suede is stunning. Very chic and minimal.

For some high street options take a look at the TopShop Kola – I understand it fits small – but it is beautiful and I especially love the bordeaux.

These from Camper are a little more out there – but I have to say I quite like their quirkiness – they look super comfy too!

The Lauryn mule from Via Spiga is a classic. I love the toe shape – also it is currently 40% off!

Another of my absolute favorites that I stumbled upon are these Moroccan Tia slippers from Dolce Vita. They also come in caramel.

Urban Outfitters carry them in this fabulous black and white print too.

Anthropologie has the Rachel Comey Brie slides which are beautiful and so neat. Pricey, but classic.

Finally, just for the hell of it, – how about the classic brown leather Gucci Princetown?

Or in a fabulous print?

So what do you think – have you bought into the pedi saving mule or are they too much like house slippers for you?

As for my weekend it was a leisurely one at that – lots of dining out and little else while the kids were on Winter break. The countdown to my transatlantic trip on Sunday has now begun!

Bells are ringing

Bell bottoms that is…Every so often I tire of my skinnies and boyfriend jeans and crave the leg lengthening, slimming bell bottom. flares 7 flares 6 flares 5 flares 4 Flares 3 Flares 2 flares 1

Here are my picks of the season to help you emulate these amazing Pinterest images.

These were the first to catch my eye from Zara

Zara flare

For not much more you can have a pair in leather.

I settled with these from ASOS as they all have elastic waists – not much to complain about there!

These are Blank NYC pull on cotton mix and come in waist sizes so you can be more accurate with fit.

Blank NYC pull on

Sods law the ones I am wearing today are now reduced – Blank NYC faux leather pull ons. I’m in a 29″ and they are perfect.

These crepe flares are fabulous – super comfortable and swishy!

I also ordered the jersey ones to try – I found these slightly looser in the thigh with less of the extreme bell bottom cut. Also now reduced! I tried a US 8 in both of these and again they were spot on.

jersey flares

I nearly got sucked into the sequin legging crew again this Christmas, but I have to say I far prefer these H&M glitter flares on me. I bought a medium and they are amazing. Lovely and fitted through the thigh and that elastic waist will be a life saver over the festive period!

glitter flares

These are similar but gold rather than silver sparkle – also more of a wide leg trousers than a true bell bottom. Again fabulous in a medium on me and the elastic waist makes them like pajama bottoms for Christmas day! I think both would look super with sneakers or a dressier shoe.

Glitter wide leg trousers

And finally here’s how I’m wearing the Blank NYC faux leather pair today. I certainly need a heel with these – my Newburys are high enough but my Sam Edelman Bradleys will be perfect.

I don’t like to save…

Because I enjoy spending money far too much! My parents and husband will confirm it! Thank goodness I still work and earn my way…Ok so now I’ve set it up I will tell you about a couple of things that happened this week…

First these arrived.

Chloes 1 ChloesBoots РChlo̩ Susanna // Trousers РZara // Top РAllSaints (use EXTRA20 for 20% extra off sale) // Jacket РMango // Bag РMcQ Alexander McQueen // Sunglasses РChanel

I was nervous as hell waiting for them as all the reviews said to size down in the Chloé Susannas, then more recent reviews said stay true to size. I knew I really wanted navy – different from black, yet still versatile. The blue on NAP have all sold out (though the merlot are lovely). Then I found one pair left at ShoeScribe.com (owned by NAP – or the other way around?). Only ShoeScribe.com only had whole sizes. I took a chance and ordered the last pair of 39s. Now sizing charts are different EVERYWHERE. It drives me bonkers. Plus there is the Fr 39 and the IT 39 which is apparently different too! I am normally a US 8.5 but I have a pair of Sam Edelman boots labelled US 8.5 and Eur 40!? So as you can imagine I was uncertain as to whether the 39s I ordered would be like boats, or if they would screw my toes up. Fortunately neither – they are perfect! I do have wide feet though so maybe that helps them fit more snuggly as the ankle is quite wide/loose on them and I’ve heard if you have a narrow foot the heel can slip. Anyway after a week of debate and umming and ahhing – even packing them back in the box to return them – I decided it was destiny – and they are here to stay! I’m pretty thrilled with them, if skint for a while!

Ok now these don’t seem nearly as extravagant in comparison as I got 25% off too with the Saks Friends and Family event last week. My new Prada sunglasses.

Pradas

I love them – I’ve coveted them for a while especially as these have plain arms as I am not a fan of the art deco swirly ones that seem to be ubiquitous here in Atlanta.

So I am a very happy girl. Now I just have to scrape some pennies together for my husband’s birthday next week 😉 (Joking darling – it’s all taken care of…xx).

As for today I headed to our local craft store. I am NOT crafty at all but once again this year our school project is to create a book character using a pumpkin. My challenge is to create The Highway Rat, my son’s favorite picture book – I have a mask at least! Wish me luck!

Project

As I had to drive by the mall on the way home I nipped in for a browse. There are lots of sales on right now! I haven’t ventured in a Banana Republic since my corporate days but our Lenox Mall one has recently had a refit so I popped in for a gander. I absolutely fell in love with this cardigan/cape!

In store they are just $58 reduced from $98 but they are here online too. The khaki is lovely in real life. I opted for a M/L for an oversize fit.

As always here are a couple of outfits from throughout the week…

So here’s hoping the crafting goes well – I have a Taylor Swift concert with Poppy to enjoy tomorrow night too!!! Now then, what to wear…?

My Net-a-porter.com sales edit

Well I have made a couple of purchases so I thought it only fair that I share what I didn’t want to miss out on! I usually use the NAP sale to stock up on great basics and that is what I have done again this time – adding once more to my collection of Splendid t-shirts with these in navy. I have both already in black, grey and white and love them:

The Supima cotton and model blend t-shirt – reduced by 40% from $65 to $39

navy t-shirt

The stretch jersey top reduced by 40% from $95 to $57

I have wanted this jumpsuit forever but full price was just a tad too much at $245 – now it is a more palatable $171.50. Their jumpsuits are brilliant for day to nightwear – so comfortable too.

Now for the other bargains that you shouldn’t miss out on. How about that pair of Dicker boots you’ve been lusting after? Now reduced from $650 to $455. Most sizes are out of stock but keep checking back as there will be returns – you can even call NAP and ask to be added to a waiting list for returns.

My Nike Airforce 1s are now just $66.50.

The highly sought after Levi’s 501 CT jeans are reduced from $100 to $70.

I am sorely tempted by the Alexander Wang Chastity tote reduced from $895 to $626.50.

So have you dared to take a peek yet? It really is a fab sale.

A spray tan and new Ancient Greeks

So we’re off on Spring Break hooray!!! We’re all ready for our annual pilgrimage to the Alabama coast – the wine is bought, the grill is packed and the bikinis are out. I’ve even had a spray tan today as after my melanoma scare I refuse to sit and sizzle in the sun like usual – only I do love being brown!

Hence my makeup free appearance here this morning – but I wanted to share my new Ancient Greeks with you! You’ll remember I was originally lusting after the Stuart Weitzman Backview. I tried them on a couple of weeks ago and I was SO disappointed. For a $500 shoe the elastic straps along the back felt cheap – especially as they fastened with velcro – which I envisioned would become nasty very quickly picking up hair and fluff. The elastic fibres also risks puckering and breaking if they are pulled too tight across the calf.

It’s a shame as Giselle looks amazing in them:

SW Backview

Anyway I got them out of my system, and I was pretty sure I needed to move on from gladiator sandals – certainly a risky choice for an almost 44 year old, with moderately okay legs – still they are very much a love ’em or loathe ’em type sandal. That was until I saw the Kori Ancient Greek arrive exclusively on Net-a-porter.com. I have a couple of Ancient Greek sandals from last year and I love them – they are handmade in Greece so I claim it’s my attempt to alleviate their debt.

The Kori comes in nude or black and is a lace up sandal with thong – it’s the thong that most appeals to me as cheaper versions with a strap across from Mango and Zara just don’t work for my wide feet and sticky out toes.

kori black kori neutral

I had to get them on quickly today – and that is no mean feat. Make sure you have time to spare to lace and adjust the height! I wore mine quite low for the photo here – but they do extend all the way up to below my knee too which I think looks more flattering. I’m wearing my darkest, loosest dress ready to throw on after my spray tan! Thankfully I am not orange, nor am I milky white as here anymore – just a lovely glowy tan color – thanks True Glow!

Ancient greeksSandals – Ancient Greek Kori // Dress – ASOS t-shirt dress

I guarantee these sandals will sell out fast as they are only available on NAP and one of the few options this year with a thong – so if you are tempted my advice is don’t delay!

See you from the beach and Happy Easter all!

Christmas outfits

I am currently reclining in my M&S cashmere onesie after stuffing myself silly at a Boxing Day lunch. We went to a local restaurant and had the best lunch ever – lobster bisque followed by steak. All I can say is thank goodness for M&S onesies – and today they are on sale!! I may have just ordered the leopard print version that Nicole Scherzinger is wearing here…yup I’m a sucker for cashmere even when it is in the 60s here! The one I bought last year is amazing and washes great – I pretty much live in it in the winter when I am home and have been known to walk down to the bus stop in it 🙂

As for other sale purchases I am particularly pleased with my Splendid haul from Net-a-porter.com. Thinking ahead for the summer of course, I have ordered a couple of t-shirt dresses, tanks and jumpsuits that are super comfortable. I even wore one of the jumpsuits on Christmas day but neglected to get a photo as I imbibed too much prosecco too soon 🙂 This is the jumpsuit worn on Christmas day – so soft and comfortable, I have a medium and it is reduced from $225 to $90.

tee-dressFinally my favorites from the AllSaints sale. These boots are to die for – so unique and dramatic. reduced from $415 to $290:

AlbaIn my eyes you can’t beat a great AllSaints dress. Today for Boxing Day I wore this – a lovely loose knit with gold thread throughout. Perfect for the expanding waistline. I have a medium and it is reduced to $129 from $215.

agnesAnd here it is on me today – thank goodness I opted for a loose dress! I was in a real rush too after spending 40 odd minutes setting up a new sewing machine for Poppy – talk about flashbacks to Home Economics classes! They are certainly paying dividends now for sure!

On Christmas Eve for our annual visit to Church I again opted for warmth and comfort with my Zara knitted suit.

As for presents, I must have been exceptionally good in 2014, – look what Santa bought me!

leopard newburyI hope you all got what you wished for and had an amazing Christmas! Now to plan those New Year’s outfits!

Tweed with spots.

I was out and about yesterday volunteering at the school.  I got to read to the class – it’s quite intense – a group of 6 and 7 year olds is really a tough audience to please!  Then I spent 2 hours stapling – yes I feel like I have a repetitive strain injury.  It was fun though and interesting to have a peek into their world for a couple of hours, though schools still make the hairs on my neck stand up – I equate them with hospitals for fear factor.  Odd considering how long I spent in academic institutions!

This week I’m trying to wear my winter coats and jackets as often as I can as this cold snap won’t last forever.  Today it’s the turn of the Boden tweed jacket from AW 2011.  I love the pink and green combo of this jacket and the quality is outstanding.  It was a fabulous sale bargain – one of the rare times that I held out for the sales!  The shirt and scarf are also Boden from 2011 – the Limited Edition sassy stitch blouse is one that rarely gets worn as it is silk and I hate paying for dry cleaning!  I’ve decided it’s tragic to keep it hanging in the closet unworn.  The jeans are the Hudsons and of course the boots are the Pistols in mocha.  I just took a look and it appears net-a-porter.com has a bunch of new stock as most sizes are now available.  Taking a day off from the gym today – I can barely raise my arms to get dressed – so the glasses are on, the Oliver Peoples Wacks in blue havana matte.

Roll necks and camouflage.

My black Boden Off Duty jumper has finally arrived – I’m still waiting for the grey to be delivered and I’m now tempted to order the mole melange color too.  Boden’s Off Duty jumper is bloody brilliant.  It’s a beautiful square cut jumper with skinny, ribbed arms – not dissimilar in cut and style to an All Saints jumper I have, though Boden’s version has a fabulous roll neck that is just perfect – not too tight and not too loose – just right in fact.  It’s mainly cotton so hangs beautifully and has a touch of cashmere in it for a lovely softness.  Granted it’s only now that it is cold enough to wear a roll neck – but I can’t believe it took me so long to order this beauty.  Once again Boden have done us proud.

Today I’ve paired it with my Zara camouflage jeans and Isabel Marant Dicker boots in black (glad I got these this season – looks like they are going up in price for 2013).  I layered the jumper over an H&M long, grey vest as you might feel a bit of a draft without anything under it.  MM just told me I look very Gallic – I’ll take that as a complement – it’s the closest I’ll get to one sitting here in the office:)
