Happy Birthday!

I love my friends but they sure can be a bad influence. Sue has introduced me to Everlane. Ironic as they don’t ship to the UK yet (except via me for Sue!). They are online only, with plans to ship internationally next year, and because they have no bricks and mortar their focus is on cutting costs for the consumer while providing incredible quality – which they do. I am a huge fan of their sweatshirts and cashmere.

Their short sleeve sweatshirt in particular is fabulous – a great boxy cut – and I think quite generous in size. They claim a medium is a US 4-6 but mediums fit me great I am definitely a US 8 on top. It comes in grey, black, navy and vanilla.

Their cashmere is divine and a great price. I love their slouchy v-neck and now have 2 of them – the black will be on it’s way to me soon I hope! It’s beautifully cut with a longer back and plenty of drape. Again I am in a medium.

Today is my brilliant Husband’s birthday and we have just been for an indulgent lunch. Dinner has been postponed till all the Halloween celebrations this weekend are done with.

Urban sweats from Uniqlo

I have to say I am fairly new to Uniqlo – mainly as they haven’t been selling online long in the US and we don’t have a store here in Atlanta. When I am in NYC I always pop in to the SoHo store and I adore the simple, unbranded, classics that they sell. Many of my blogging friends love their silk shirts, merino sweaters and cashmere and last year I bought 3 of their men’s cashmere crewnecks. The quality and price point of Uniqlo is fabulous – I just wish we did have a store here as their sizing can be hit or miss making online shopping a bit of a gamble.

Recently I was online looking for cashmere and stumbled across the Urban sweats collection. Unfortunately it is pretty much sold out in the UK but there is still plenty of stock left of most items in the US.

The sweatpants are great with a cross over crotch and the sweat fabric is thick and soft.

I love the cut of the sweatshirt too – cropped yet with a little something extra – I love to wear mine with a tank underneath with jeans. I actually had to replace mine as I was wearing it for the first time when I smashed our neighbors’ glass door!

Today I am wearing the dress/tunic from the collection. It is a medium and fits beautifully. I really do love the thickness of the sweat – it is warm for a chilly Fall morning. I’ve tried to show you the cut at the back – it’s lower than the front.

I think I might be getting the cashmere out tomorrow – temperatures are falling ready for Halloween!

PSA – Mango 30% off again!

So you missed out last time – well never fear Mango are offering another whopping 30% off all weekend using code 5WEEKEND3 in the USA and 5WEEKEND in the UK. Here’s my new jacket from there that I just adore – another slightly 80s influenced look 🙂 I’m wearing a UK Medium/US Small.

I’ve just cleansed with hot yoga and now I’m off for lunch before pumpkin carving with two six year old boys later! Another fun Friday!

Leather and loafers

I’ve always had a thing for real leather jackets. I got my first on a day trip with my Mum and Dad in Chester. It was a gorgeous cream blouson jacket from Lakeside Leather and I was thrilled with it. I couldn’t wait to wear it and went out on my bike in it, promptly falling off – no damage to the jacket thankfully – only my pride! A few years later I got a bat wing black leather jacket (it was the 80s) from Whittaker’s department store in Bolton. It cost a fortune (well for then) and it was a birthday present. After several warnings from Mum and Dad about not leaving it anywhere I wore it to a party and threw it on the bed with everyone else’s coats. Needless to say at the end of the evening it wasn’t there, my Dad picked me up and we had to report it stolen a the local Police station. It still bothers me that someone I knew nicked it from that party!

So not a great history with my leather jackets of old – and maybe to make up for that disappointment I now own several – a couple of AllSaints biker jackets that I was fortunate to get in the sales, a couple of Mango leather bomber jackets, a Zara leather jacket cut similar to a denim jacket from this season, and my red Zara leather jacket from a couple of years ago. AllSaints’ sales are definitely worth waiting for – their leather is incredible, heavy and soft and will last years. Mango have the best high street leather that I have found – really soft and not thin.

Here are two of my current favorites that I have worn over the past couple of days.

Sweater dress

Oooh how I love digging through my closet for knitwear and jumpers! I love Fall/Winter dressing far more than sundresses and shorts! I think there is more thought and planning that goes into an outfit that includes scarves, hats and boots – and I enjoy that process! These boots are now permanently fixed to my feet – they are so comfortable! The dress is an absolute bargain off ASOS. It fits on the bigger side – I am in a US 6 and it will also look great dressed casually with sneakers. I think it’s actually quite AllSaints – but then I think that of most knitwear in gray – my weakness!

Fall photos

I have never liked posed shots of the kids, such as school photos with fake backgrounds. Instead we meet with Karen each Fall for some less contrived, more spontaneous and natural shots. We first met Karen when she photographed the kids at daycare and she has always captured their personalities perfectly. We always have a giggle that we are one of the few families in the South who don’t own anything monogrammed or smocked for their children’s photos 🙂

On Saturday we headed about 45 mins out of town to a horse farm where we’ve had photos taken before. It was just the most idyllic Fall day. Clear skies, gorgeous sunshine and crisp air. We had a great time and I can’t wait to share the photos with you soon!

A little bit retro

When you write a blog you tend to read a lot of blog posts too. From frequently reading style, fashion, street style blogs etc. it is fairly easy to garner great advice on what should work or shouldn’t work for your body type – assuming of course you know what body type you are!

My body has been described as apple, triangular and most recently rectangular. All I know is I have quite a small frame but bulk up around the face, chest and arms fastest when gaining weight, yet I can comfortably fit into a US 6 jean if the waistband has some stretch – I have no hips or backside to speak of. So whatever shape category I fall into I know that I need to be careful up top and enhance down below. Sometimes however a garment comes along that I know I should not touch with a barge pole, but somehow I just can’t resist it.

Meet my ‘masculine style’ Mango jacket:

Mango jacket

It’s worn over a cardigan here but the silhouette is basically cocoon. It has dropped shoulders and is oversized – I have a Eur Medium which works as I will be able to wear it over sweaters. It is so 80s retro I adore it – names like Limahl, Simon Le Bon and Spandau Ballet have all been associated with this jacket. If you’ve been following my blog for a while you’ll be no stranger to my passion for the 80s. This jacket is so evocative of that glorious decade that I couldn’t return it, even though it breaks all my personal ‘shape rules’. Once in a while we have to wear something purely because we love it.

Don’t forget that Mango currently have 30% off coats and sweaters till October 22nd! In the US use 5MNG4 and in the UK use 5MNG.

Fall break

We had a lovely long weekend just hanging around at home and eating great food. Yesterday I roasted a leg of lamb that was virtually demolished by the kids. They can be so picky about some foods – my daughter doesn’t like pizza at all – yet when it comes to a good roast with all the trimmings they practically lick the plate clean! I always love cooking a meal when I know it will be enjoyed!

Here are a couple of outfits from over the weekend – most of it was spent in comfy sweats lying on the sofa with the dogs 🙂 Firstly these are the joggers I raved about the other day – a dressy jogger – yes such a thing does exist!

It’s absolutely wazzing it down here today and heading over the Atlantic soon – stay dry!

Cirque du Soleil and Columbus Day sales!

We’re on Fall break here till Tuesday. Its a new break they have introduced into the school calendar year and I love it! Previously we have gone from early August to Thanksgiving with no break – which take it from me – is a LONG slog. These few days off give us time for some well earned r&r in the perfect Fall weather that we’re enjoying.

Last night we took the children to Cirque du Soleil and all I can say is AMAZING! We saw them a couple of years ago at the same venue – a huge chapiteau erected down at Atlantic Station. I say huge but once inside it is remarkable how close you are to the action, they are masters at involving the audience in the story. If you ever have the chance to go and see a Cirque du Soleil show go! I was skeptical before my first show but these guys even make juggling a jaw dropping experience!

My friends on Instagram mentioned how well my black eye has healed up – I have to say Bare Minerals concealer is the BEST – it literally conceals any blemish! Plus it is in powder form so never looks caked on – check it out the next time you walk into a glass door!

Fall break coincides with Columbus Day here which is on Monday. Another excuse for retailers to punt their Fall clothes. Don’t miss out on the following fabulous sales that are currently underway!

AllSaints – 20% off select items using OCTOBER

J.Crew – 30% off using WEEKENDPLANS

J.Crew Factory – 50% off entire site

Piperlime – 20% off with FALL20

Enjoy!

J.Crew wool drapey sweatpants

I wore these trousers yesterday but by the time I got chance to take a photo I was just not feeling up to it. The pain meds knock me out completely but the good news is I feel like I am healing well and no longer need to take them!

Anyway the trousers! They are the wool drapey sweatpants – light, comfortable and dressy – a jogger you can wear out of the house. Think tailored pant with cuffs and elastic waist. I cannot overstate how much I love these. Size down and you’ll be in love too. I have the grey and navy in a US 6 and they are perfect with heels or sneakers.
