It’s snowing – let’s get the faux fur coats out quick!

I have previously bemoaned the short winters here in Atlanta. I love winter dressing and try to make the most of the winter months. Today we woke up to unexpected snow flurries so I quickly changed my planned attire (I always select my outfit the night before to prevent harassed mornings!) and grabbed my over the knee boots and faux fur for extra warmth. I love a good faux fur and there is so little opportunity to wear them that perhaps having 3 in my closet is overkill, never mind the AllSaints shearling that made it’s way to my home late last year!

I love faux fur so much I actually have a Pinterest board dedicated to it. In my opinion the blogger Maja Wyh and Kate Moss wear fur the best. They always look incredible and never anything close to a character from Monsters Inc.

So here I am today with a hastily thrown together outfit with one of my beloved fur coats – an old Zara one.

Boot Porn

I love a good boot and I consider myself an early adopter when it comes to over-the-knee boots. Some are still skeptical about their ‘Pretty Woman’ association, or in the UK the ‘pantomime’ connotation. I gloss over this and simply enjoy wearing a long, thigh high boot with skinnies or a shorter dress, flashing a bit of flesh.

So to ‘fess up – here are those that I currently own:

2 pairs of the Stuart Weitzman 5050s – not too tall – basically just over the knee. These were the cult classic boot before the introduction of the Lowland. They have an elastic back and leather front – hence the 50/50…I have both the black suede and tan nubuck (no longer available unfortunately). Both are incredibly comfortable and I consider them my ‘practical’ OTK boots!

5050_BLASUE_12

black 5050

me tan 5050I’m also lucky enough to own 2 pairs of Stuart Weitzman Highland boots. The black were bought about 3 years ago and the grey were an addition last Fall. I adore these boots. Super leg lengthening, the perfect heel height and great with a dress. These go pretty high up the leg but are easy to put on. The suede is stretchy so I roll it down and pull up like a sock once my foot is in the shoe.

me black highland

me grey highland 2Then there is the Lowland in currant that I bought last year. A much louder color but great with jeans and big jumpers. The Lowland are the flat, more practical version of the Highland.

me currant lowland

Finally the other knee high boots that I own and adore were cheap as chips from Zara last year. They are knee high and have a great 70s vibe to them.

Zara boot

So what’s it to be this year? Yes I know – I don’t really need a pair but who ever said I bought something only on a ‘need’ basis?! There are several pairs that have caught my eye so far and I’m pretty sure I know which will be in my closet before Christmas.

The first pair is the Sam Edelman Josephine. These are knee high – but quite high like my Zara ones above. They are flat and have gorgeous fringe detailing. They are available in tan suede or black suede. Sam Edelman are now available on Net-a-porter.com too so tax free in the US!

Josephine tanThe next pair I absolutely LOVE! They are a higher version of the Josephine and have a block heel – the Sam Edelman Taylan. The tan is available on NAP here but I also love the modern ivory available here and here. They are so lovely and slouchy – I just LOVE them.

Finally – my absolute lust after boot for Fall 2015. This is actually a ‘summer’ boot from Stuart Weitzman – the Rockerchic. It has the height of an OTK boot, but the slouchiness of the Taylan – a little more louche than the Lowland boot. Not to mention I LOVE the color fossil – not practical for snow I agree but hey how much snow do we get in Atlanta?

rockerch_fossue_12 rockerchicZappos.com also stock them in a saddle/tan color if you’re looking for that nod to the 70s.

Neimans stock them in a cashew very similar to my 5050 nubuck boots, and black, so there is plenty of choice around!

Finally some outfit updates – an odd mix recently given the odd mix of weather we’ve had!

My lovely husband kindly suggested I was channeling Blackadder in my H&M blouse the other day! BTW H&M have 20% off and free shipping on all orders over $60 at the moment – use code 3204 at checkout.

Attaining the boho 70s look with Mango and Zara

Mango and Zara are two of my favorite high street stores. I say high street when in fact I do all my shopping with them online. Unfortunately we have no Mango in Atlanta and our Zara store is pretty small. I thought both of their AW14 collections were pretty lack luster – not much excited me. SS15 is a different story – I love so much of it!

Mango’s tops have always been great for me – I find their sizing is slightly more generous and consistent than Zara’s. They have always done great boho tops and I have a couple that I bought in Spain last year that I have just dug out – its been in the high 70s here so I can certainly start transitioning my closet for spring!

I love this blue printed top – perfect with flares or denim shorts.

printed topThis chiffon blouse is beautiful – I mentioned the other day that I love a good tunic – I feel much more comfortable without buttons peeking open.

chiffon blouseI have this black top but have yet to wear it. It is just beautiful and great quality. It comes with cami underneath to preserve your modesty.

crochet black topThese crochet tops are not available in my size yet on the US site but they are on my wish list. I just love them – so feminine.

crochet top white crochet topI’ve just ordered these to try the blue and the red. They remind me of Madewell tops that are twice the price. They are so pretty and feminine and I hope to wear them with jeans and my Ancient Greek sandals.

ruffle top red ruffle topThis dress also caught my eye – I don’t have a denim dress and I love the shape of this one. The pockets are a fabulous detail.

denim dressFor those of us that love fringing you can’t miss out on this top. Terrible photo as it doesn’t show the fringe – but both sleeves have fringing. I love it as the front is plain so doesn’t draw attention to a larger chest.

fringe teeAs for Zara it has been their dresses that have caught my attention. Here’s a curve ball – definitely risking mutton BUT I think worn on vacation, by the beach, with sandals it could be an instant hit. The fact it is a ‘romper‘ means it’s short length is less of an issue.

skirt jumpsuitI adore this dress with a stunning embroidered neckline. Really unique and it reminds me of the Kate Moss TopShop dresses that sold out in a heartbeat last year.

zara dressThis red dress is a great alternative to all the creams around – it is really lovely in real life too.

red dressFinally this dress is amazing value and I love the dropped waist. I’ll be ordering it soon.

black dressWith every item I look at I have a specific pair of sandals in mind that I want to wear. They are completely polarizing and I have even surprised myself. I think what I love about these gladiators is that they have thick straps – more ‘solid’ looking than most currently in stores with skinny straps. Now I know I am no Gisele but let me introduce you to my lust shoe for summer 2015 – the Stuart Weitzman Backview.

gisele backviewToday I headed back to our new TopShop. It is so exciting to finally have a bricks and mortar store here – I must be getting old though as my only complaint is the ridiculously loud music in there! I had a $10 gift card burning a hole in my pocket so today I put it towards the Hayden boyfriend jeans in ecru. I love them.

Catching up

I’m home and just recovering from my jetlag! Fortunately it is Hugh’s 7th birthday today so I have had lots to get on with to take my mind off my fatigue. This might be the most excited I’ve seen him yet for a birthday. We’re heading for burgers and milkshakes today to celebrate then he has a party tomorrow with his classmates. Oddly enough it has snowed today here in Atlanta – as it did 7 years ago when I left the hospital – a rare occurrence here in March but I remember it all so vividly!

So in between dashing around for lunch with Hugh, collecting cakes and balloons and dropping dogs at the vets I thought I’d take 5 mins to catch up on some outfits worn recently. The weather is not conducive to planning right now – when I landed on Wednesday it was 70 degrees Fahrenheit and today it is in the high 20s and snowing!

I’m making a special effort for the birthday boy and decided to wear a dress for lunch with him – he looked petrified this morning when I threatened to wear my onesie 🙂

A diagnosis

What a week! I am thoroughly relieved to get to Friday. After my skin check the other week at the dermatologists, I heard on Tuesday that the mole on my left thigh that I was concerned about is actually in situ melanoma. Thank goodness I persisted and kept getting it checked – though I am furious that after 3 years and 3 annual checks, where I repeatedly asked for this particular mole to be looked at, I was continually told it ‘looks fine’. Eventually my dermatologist biopsied it and my gut was right. So on Tuesday I will be heading in for a procedure done under a local where they remove a circle of skin from around the mole. I’ll have some scarring – but nothing a fun tattoo won’t cover up:) Please, please, please always persevere and get a second opinion if you think your concerns are being ignored. I daren’t even think what could have been if I hadn’t. I’m certainly a little shaken as cancer is always something that happens to other people not you, plus my brother has just had testicular cancer removed at Christmas. Fortunately his scans gave him the all clear though he has opted for a dose of chemo, which he gets on Monday, just to be safe. I am praying that these things come in twos not threes. I am determined that this diagnosis will only make me stronger, fitter and a better version of me.

My sneaker obsession

Weren’t those sneakers in my last post awesome? I cannot wait for them to arrive. For some reason I seem to have developed a New Year sneaker obsession. Maybe it is my desire to simplify and opt for simple classics as opposed to wild one hit wonders?

I made lots of sartorial errors last year but one major improvement I made to my closet was to add some navy and blue pieces. I love neutrals but I was getting tired of grey and black. Some navy pieces added a little extra something to my closet, and it is another style pointer that is endorsed by my new handbook “How to be Parisian…”. So why not add another pair of sneakers that also happen to be navy…and classics…? Introducing the navy Stan Smith from Adidas.

white and zebraMy Husband is a fan of classic sneakers having worn red hi-top Converse and Adidas classics all his life. He’s often encouraged me to seek out the classic Nike Air Force 1 hi-top and I have so far been reluctant as they always looked so big and awkward. That is till I saw these on NAP. A new, slimmer, more feminine version of the classic. I totally adore them.

AF1 classicIt’s always dangerous on NAP at this time of year when new season stock is arriving daily. I also fell in love with this cobalt pair. Just stunning.

Adidas cobaltThis neutral pair remind me of my Isabel Marant Bobbys, a much cheaper option and yet maybe even cooler?

AF1 NYCI can’t buy these as they are patterned. But if they adhere to your 2015 fashion rules go for them – they are fabulous. Adidas originals by Mary Katrantzou:

New beauty products for 2015

It’s still not back to normal here quite yet. The kids and I are off today for a teacher work day and then school starts tomorrow. Poppy is still sleeping here and it is 9.30am – tomorrow morning is going to be hell. I can also say that this has been one of the best, most relaxing Christmas Holidays we’ve spent as the 4 of us, and I am really not looking forward to them heading back tomorrow. I could happily spend another week at home with them. We’re off to the movies this afternoon to watch Into the Woods as my Husband is back at work and I thought it might give me a couple of hours break later 🙂

I had a couple of hours to myself yesterday at the Mall. As I am trying not to buy any new clothes for a while, plus I seem to have unintentionally embraced a sober January, I thought a little indulgence was in order. I used to treat myself to nail polishes but my nails have been such a disgrace since having my acrylics removed that I can’t even consider colored nails right now. More on that later. So instead I have become hooked on lipsticks. Last month I bought 3 beautiful deep plum colors from Mac. Rebel is still one of my all time favorites – it’s not nearly as dark on the lips as it looks in the bullet and it has a lovely soft satin finish – it really makes my teeth look whiter. Odyssey has a beautiful frost finish to it and reminds me of and old Rimmel lipstick I wore years ago – Heather Shimmer, and Hang Up is deeper and creamier than Rebel and full of moisture.

From left to right – Rebel, Odyssey and Hang Up with Vino pencil

IMG_1403

After a few weeks of wearing these lush darker colors I was craving a heavier eye and nude lip – especially with my darker hair. I spent a lot of time reading beauty blogs as Mac do lots of ‘nudes’, but given my yellowy undertones I was really concerned about going too pale and feeling washed out. I decided, especially on viewing, that their classic nude, Creme d’nude, is just too nude for me. The Mac girls at Bloomingdales were super helpful and in the end I walked away with 2 I had on my list and 2 that I hadn’t even considered before – one of these, Myth, now being my favorite!

Left to right Hue, Myth, Pure Zen and Blankety, with Dior Addict liquid liner.

IMG_1660

Hue is very sheer with peachy tones – it is a great every day color. Myth is stunning – really nude on the lips and perfect for that smokey eye look – very dramatic for a night out. Pure Zen is a little creamier than Hue but still has those gorgeous peach tones. Blankety is gorgeous and really creamy with mauve undertones and gives great coverage. Ironically Myth and Blankety were the 2 that weren’t on my list and yet were recommended and are now my favorites – those Mac girls know what they are doing!

As for the eyeliner well I have been looking for a great liquid liner for some time. Only problem is most these days seem to have the felt tip and I prefer a brush. Having browsed Sephora and ummed and ahhed for a while I decided to take the plunge with the Dior Addict – the packaging won me over 🙂

Dior liner

Back to my nails – I first started looking at the Dior counter as I have recently rediscovered my love for their Nail Glow. My nails have been horrific since having my acrylics removed from over the summer – never again – it has taken months to get them anywhere near the strength they used to be, plus Folic acid and Biotin every day! The only thing that has saved them recently and looks decent on them is the Dior Nail Glow – I cannot live without it now. Not to mention reading “How to be Parisian” has encouraged me to adopt the mantra ‘less is more’.

Dior nail glow

As for my skincare routine this year I have splurged on a couple of new products that I now can’t live without. I’ve always been good at cleansing and moisturizing but I felt the need to switch it up a bit heading into 2015.

For the last 6 month I have been using Shiseido Ultimune serum before my basic Nivea moisturiser. I absolutely love it – you only need a tiny amount so it lasts months. I really have noticed smoother skin – especially on my neck were I need it most. It is now a must have in my daily routine.

ultimune

Following on from this success I figured the Japanese must know what they are doing and I purchased the Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist night emulsion. It is super light and non greasy so I really feel like it is all absorbed before my head hits the pillow. Again it lasts forever – one pump/drop covers my whole face and neck.

Benefiance

As for cleansing I had been using up a trial size of Clinique Take the Day Off and I nearly bought a full size version until I saw Sephora did their own cheaper version. It does exactly what it says on the bottle and I love it and use it before using a drugstore foam cleanser.

Sephora cleanser

So what with my decreased alcohol intake, increased water intake and new products my skin should be glowing! Have you added any new beauty products to your routine this year?

My outifts from the past couple of days have been rather black heavy – it has taken a lot to persuade me out of my M&S cashmere onesie (now only £89 reduced from £199!!).

We made it to 2015!

Happy New Year to you all!!! I expect many of you are nursing hangovers today! Well I nursed mine yesterday after a fabulous night out on Tuesday. We decided to avoid ‘amateur night’ aka NYE, and headed out to celebrate on the 30th instead. That meant we had a lovely, lazy NYE spent at the movies watching A Night at the Museum 3 with the kids, then later watching the freezing cold revelers in Times Square while I enjoyed my traditional Chinese takeaway and several cups of camomile tea! Guess who is feeling virtuous today?

This month I am heading into my 4th year of blogging! Can you believe it? I find it astounding when I look back at previous posts – some successes and some not so great outfits. I’m still not where I want to be with my ‘style’ but I’m going to have another fun year experimenting! Thank you so much for all your support over the past three years and I am looking forward to trying to entertain you all again this year! Here’s to 2015!

Here’s my outfit from Tuesday – super comfy, and yet I love the exposed shoulders.

And a couple of outfits from the week – my Husband calls this my Han Solo jacket – he reckons I need to be piloting the Millennium Falcon when wearing it! My harems are falling slightly oddly in this photos but hopefully you get the gist.

Finally I got to wear a new pair of boots the other day. These Zara boots are amazing leather for the price and you can’t go wrong with a bit of fringe. I have cleaned my mirror since – in fact I haven’t stopped cleaning since we took the tree down and I am still finding needles!

A quick update on some sale purchases too. Uniqlo have a brilliant sale on right now and I managed to get my hands on this gorgeous cashmere tunic for $59.99 reduced from $129.99!

Not in the sale but definitely worth checking out are their new cotton and cashmere mix sweaters. I ordered a couple – they are a great casual jumper yet the added cashmere makes them feel super indulgent.

They also do a short sleeved version that is perfect for that transition into Spring we can all start thinking about now!

My gorgeous Stuart Weitzman Leman lace ups are now in the sale too here.

So all the best for 2015! Best thing for a hangover is a bacon butty with HP sauce – take it from me! We’re having a New Years roast today so I’ll be getting the pork and potatoes in the oven soon!

Christmas has arrived

Yes our household is now the proud owner of a tree. Our school doesn’t have a tree sale so we support another local elementary PTA each year and get our 9 footer from them. I refused to let the kids decorate last night as the tree was wet and I didn’t want them electrocuted while we were out. That didn’t go down well with them at all, so this morning I was verbally assaulted from 7am onwards with “mommy get up! We want to do the tree”…I tried to hide under the duvet after a late night out but it didn’t work. My kids are relentless.

Another sign that Christmas has arrived is that our elf, Maximus, has also returned. Lying in bed the other night, about to fall asleep, my Husband sat up with a start – ‘f*ck’ he said.

What, what, what?! Have we left the gas on? Have we forgotten to pay a bill? Have we left the children somewhere?

No – worse than that – he explained – “I haven’t moved the f*cking elf”

On Thursday I had my monthly trip to the salon. I wanted less length on top and went for a more textured look, along with a lighter color to highlight my faux hawk. I am pretty darn happy with how it turned out. I got to wear my new Boden Off Duty sweater. I absolutely love this year’s version – the knit is looser and it drapes nicely, the sleeves are also longer. It’s the perfect winter jumper.

Last night we went out for dinner – maybe our last night out together before Christmas what with parties, cheer competitions and the arrival of relatives. We had a fabulous evening as always. Stella joined me for the photo session but quickly lost interest.

A Wedding Weekend in Charlotte

Just a quick weekend update as I am currently nursing 2 sick children at home! One with a head cold and one with a sore tummy – both glued to Phineas and Ferb. I feel like I am stuck in Groundhog Day. My children seem to be able to watch the same episode over and over and find it equally hilarious each time.

My weekend in Charlotte was fabulous. I left on my own on Friday for the Bachelorette/shower party and then my Husband arrived on Saturday. It was brutally cold but enough alcohol was imbibed and enough laughter had to keep the blood warm and flowing! The party on the Friday evening was held at the Charlotte City Club and it was great fun to catch up with the Bride-to-be and old and new friends.

I wore my Stuart Weitzman Highland boots and my AllSaints Hafbec knitted dress, with the Warehouse Teddy coat for warmth. A comfortable outfit that I felt warm and stylish in. The lipstick is NARS Palais Royale lip pencil.

IMG_1309 IMG_1311 IMG_1313 IMG_1315

Thankfully we had a limo provided – I felt like a true Real Housewife in our stretch Hummer!

IMG_1318

I was super excited on Saturday for the arrival of my Husband. The last time we had a night away together without the kids was for my 40th 3 years ago! This was long overdue! I wore my AllSaints Haff sweater, Theory leather leggings (mine are midnight blue but TheOutnet.com also has them in black now!) and Vince Claire heels in woodsmoke. The lipstick is Mac Snow Orchid. My Husband delivered a new jacket for me too! The Zara fur in charcoal – I adore it – a perfect color! It fits small and I have the Large.

IMG_1328 IMG_1331 IMG_1330

IMG_1333

While I remember – leather pants/leggings – you think you would need to professional dry clean them right? Wrong. I found this article on Pinterest and took a leap of faith with my Theory pants the other night. I doused them under the tap with warm water, inside out, then threw them in the tumble dryer. I swear they came out perfect and I get to save a fortune on dry cleaning bills!

So now it’s back to reality with a thud – we’re now cycling through Johnny Test episodes…
