The Birthday Girl

Yesterday Poppy turned 9! I can’t quite believe I am the mother of a 9 year old. She loves hearing the story of her actual birth and everytime I detail it for her I feel a pang of sadness that it is so long ago – I don’t ever want to forget that day we welcomed our first baby into the world! She made us all wait till 6.30pm – her approx. time of birth – before we could ‘celebrate properly’! Chocolate fudge cake seemed to work well for that little celebration πŸ˜‰

We ended up at Shake Shack for burgers – her favorite place for food, but I am more excited about traveling to NYC 2 weeks today, for a mother/daughter trip to continue her celebrations!

It’s the last week of school now, packed with conferences, school visits and lots of fun for them! It’s Memorial Day this weekend too, so we’re planning a very lazy weekend interspersed with various meals out and mini celebrations to welcome the beginning of summer! I must not forget to stream The Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday – one of my favorite events of the year πŸ˜‰

Here are my outfits from the past couple of days – I seem to be reaching for the jeans at the moment!

Keeping it feminine

With the new septum ring I am trying to keep things ultra feminine. It’s a very polarizing piercing and fortunately, so far, the majority of feedback has been positive! Or they may just be being polite πŸ™‚ I find that reactions to piercings vary by generation and location. In my situation it is definitely a ‘fashion’ statement rather than one of rebellion. I spend a lot of time researching style images and maybe that is why I see that piercings can be sophisticated and elegant, as opposed to harsh and aggressive. The NYTimes ran an article here that makes interesting reading.

Here are some of the beautiful images that finally encouraged me to take the plunge.

Yesterday I got a good response to my outifit, however, I have to say I didn’t really feel me – I felt a bit ‘mumsy’ in the tunic and white jeans. I think I’ll prefer the tunic with shorts – I felt too much like I was wearing the ‘Atlanta Mom uniform’.

It’s transitioning to spring

I’ve already taken some of my large knits downstairs into my ‘storage closest’, and sadly my cashmere onesies will be heading there tonight not to be seen again till November 😦 I’m still keeping a few sweaters around as the weather here is completely unreliable right into May – only then can you guarantee heat daily. My daffodils know spring is blooming, we have deer roaming the neighborhood with their babies, and the blossom is beginning to appear. Spring makes me smile.

To acknowledge the warmer temperatures I’ve worn tees and jackets, and had my ankles on show for the past two days.

A Wedding Weekend in Charlotte

Just a quick weekend update as I am currently nursing 2 sick children at home! One with a head cold and one with a sore tummy – both glued to Phineas and Ferb.Β I feel like I am stuck in Groundhog Day. My children seem to be able to watch the same episode over and over and find it equally hilarious each time.

My weekend in Charlotte was fabulous. I left on my own on Friday for the Bachelorette/shower party and then my Husband arrived on Saturday. It was brutally cold but enough alcohol was imbibed and enough laughter had to keep the blood warm and flowing! The party on the Friday evening was held at the Charlotte City Club and it was great fun to catch up with the Bride-to-be and old and new friends.

I wore my Stuart Weitzman Highland boots and my AllSaints Hafbec knitted dress, with the Warehouse Teddy coat for warmth. A comfortable outfit that I felt warm and stylish in. The lipstick is NARS Palais Royale lip pencil.

Thankfully we had a limo provided – I felt like a true Real Housewife in our stretch Hummer!

I was super excited on Saturday for the arrival of my Husband. The last time we had a night away together without the kids was for my 40th 3 years ago! This was long overdue! I wore my AllSaints Haff sweater, Theory leather leggings (mine are midnight blue but TheOutnet.com also has them in black now!) and Vince Claire heels in woodsmoke. The lipstick is Mac Snow Orchid. My Husband delivered a new jacket for me too! The Zara fur in charcoal – I adore it – a perfect color! It fits small and I have the Large.

While I remember – leather pants/leggings – you think you would need to professional dry clean them right? Wrong. I found this article on Pinterest and took a leap of faith with my Theory pants the other night. I doused them under the tap with warm water, inside out, then threw them in the tumble dryer. I swear they came out perfect and I get to save a fortune on dry cleaning bills!

So now it’s back to reality with a thud – we’re now cycling through Johnny Test episodes…

The essential transitional piece

I know you have all been dealing with an Indian Summer in the UK and here in Atlanta we are unseasonably cool – but it won’t last. The challenge is when do we pack the Summer closet away and commit to Fall? Well one piece that I find saves my umming and ahhing over what to wear at this time of year is a sleeveless jacket. It provides the added weight and warmth that you may crave early morning, along with some stylish tailoring, without fully committing to a full on coat.

The high street has several great options right now, starting with these from Zara:

I particularly love this first one that is also worn by Brooklyn Blonde here and above.

Mango are also a great reliable source of on trend jackets:

I adore this military inspired jacket:

However, for a true timeless classic this one cannot be beaten:

And here is my interpretation. My sleeveless jacket is last year’s from Marks &Β Spencer who currently have this one available at just Β£13.99 reduced from Β£45!

New earrings.

I’ve never been one to wear huge earrings. I am always envious of my friends who can carry off great chandelier earrings or statement necklaces. I always feel it’s just too much on me – I feel ‘over the top’ with large jewelry – except that is when it comes to rings and bracelets! Since having all my piercings done I’ve been wearing studs all the time. I’ve got so much going on in my ears it seems crazy to add more! However,Β I have grown tired of my studs and I was looking for something delicate and different – fine jewelry as opposed to costume jewelry – without the fine jewelry price.

I have been buying my nose rings from an Etsy store – they are fabulous low gauge and gold filled so no tarnishing. Karyn is based in BC, Canada and makes the jewelry herself. Recently I discovered that she also makes beautiful earrings that appeared to be exactly what I was looking for – and they were. They arrived quickly and are so delicate and light – I love wearing them. I got mine in rose gold filled to match other jewelry I have, but she will also make them in silver and yellow gold filled.

It’s back off to work now for me and then cheerleading practice with Poppy tonight, that’s after 3 hours of practice yesterday! It’s a good job she loves it!

What girl doesn’t need new shoes?

In an attempt to reduce my shopping and stick to my monthly budget I have sworn off clothes ordering till I lose 20lbs. Β Weight gain has been another unfortunate side effect of perimenopause – at least that’s what I am blaming it on! Β So I am back on Jenny Craig for a while – the only diet that I have tried that works every time for me – though obviously keeping the pounds off is my failing. Β Fortunately they welcome me back with open arms (as long asΒ I open my check book) and I always find it easy to stick to the diet because I see results immediately. Β It’s New York Fashion Week in a couple of weeks and I have been invited to a party where there will be lots of gorgeous, 20-something year old bloggers, so I need to feel confident and hot (and hopefully look it too!). Β There is no better incentive to try and lose weight!

So no clothes – that obviously doesn’t mean no shoes or make-up! Β I am just a little obsessed with footwear right now.

As you all know I adore the Vince Claire pumps. Β Vince isΒ becoming a brand that I am more and more attracted too – their clothes are casual yet elegant – and they now have a stand alone store here in Atlanta. Β Well Vince have done it again for me with the Claire in new Fall colors. Β Personally I am lusting over the ink suede. Β They will be mine – but maybe not till November time when I can wear them with my grey leather trousers. Β They also come in black cherry suede, black suede and umber suede. Β I take between a US 8 and 8.5 and the 8 fits perfectly – a little narrow at first but they stretch to fit after a couple of wears.

Next up are these beauties from Sam Edelman – another favorite brand of mine for footwear. Β The Sam Edelman Anastasia comes in burgundy, black and grey – and yes I want all three!

Finally there are some great deals on sneakers at J.Crew in their sale. Β I am smitten by these New Balance and there is an extra 30% off the sale price right now (code SHOPSALE)!

So there you go – a clothes freeze doesn’t mean no shopping:)

The birthday celebrations are finally over…

After continuing all week I am well and truly closing down the party. Β I’ve had a brilliant week in the company of family and friends and I’m now ready to get on with this damn health kick I keep talking about – all talk and no action for sure.

On Tuesday evening I headed out with some great girls from work – another Leo and a new girl so it was a combination of birthday and welcome drinks. Β I’ve always loved off the shoulder tops – for someone like me with a weak jawline and one too many chins I think they are really flattering and draw the eye to the clavicle.

Heading off to work the following day I felt the need for comfy clothes and what better shoes to wear than Golden Goose – cool and comfy to add a bit of oomph to an otherwise relatively boring outfit.

Thursday night I was out with Cali who I went to NYC with at the beginning of summer. Β I always have so much fun with her – friends really have made this year’s birthday perfect. Β I swear the photo shows up every darn crease on this top – it really wasn’t quite as bad in real life and was perfect after 5 minutes in the Atlanta humidity!

Okay off to put the running gear on – have a great weekend!! Β We’ve got some very exciting visitors coming on Sunday – I’ll keep you posted!

Kool and the Gang

It’s 1.47am here and I am listening to BBC Radio 2 online. Β Can you believe they just played Kool and the Gang “Joanna” – oh yes it is a sign…I’m tired, a little tipsy and a lot happy. Β After an amazing dinner I am off to bed ready to begin my 44th year on Sunday!

Today started with a great hot yoga session, followed by an indulgent lunch out on my own, a scary storm, and then dinner at our favorite special restaurant.
