The Birthday Girl

Yesterday Poppy turned 9! I can’t quite believe I am the mother of a 9 year old. She loves hearing the story of her actual birth and everytime I detail it for her I feel a pang of sadness that it is so long ago – I don’t ever want to forget that day we welcomed our first baby into the world! She made us all wait till 6.30pm – her approx. time of birth – before we could ‘celebrate properly’! Chocolate fudge cake seemed to work well for that little celebration ๐Ÿ˜‰

We ended up at Shake Shack for burgers – her favorite place for food, but I am more excited about traveling to NYC 2 weeks today, for a mother/daughter trip to continue her celebrations!

It’s the last week of school now, packed with conferences, school visits and lots of fun for them! It’s Memorial Day this weekend too, so we’re planning a very lazy weekend interspersed with various meals out and mini celebrations to welcome the beginning of summer! I must not forget to stream The Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday – one of my favorite events of the year ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here are my outfits from the past couple of days – I seem to be reaching for the jeans at the moment!

Succumbing to the pink jacket trend.

Pink, pink, pink – it’s been everywhere in AW13, starting with the Marks and Spencer pink duster coat that set the world alight across the Atlantic (okay so not technically the ‘world’). ย I resisted temptation as lets face it I have more coats than ever deemed necessary living in the Southern States. ย As time has marched on, and the Spring season starts to hit the stores, it seems that pink is here to stay for a while…and I have started twitching for pink.

This ASOS jacket is stunning and a great soft shade of pink – almost lilac. ย It’s also currently reduced and will be great for seeing you through the Spring.

If you prefer more of a coral pink this from TopShop is a great choice. ย There are only a few sizes left online but check out your local Nordstrom if you are in the US.

If you’re currently freezing here in the Polar Plunge, or just dealing with the regular January frigid temperatures in the UK, you may not be quite ready for a jacket yet. ย These coats are great options and align nicely with the pastel trend for Spring.

I love this TopShop fluffy coat and this might be my choice…IF I needed another coat ๐Ÿ™‚

I can’t talk about pink coats without mentioning this cashmere blend coat by Marks and Spencer. ย It looks just amazing – the cut, the color and the length. ย At ยฃ99 it’s a great coat. ย Should I order it just to try?

Pink cashmere coat

Whether it’s a coat or a jacket that suits your lifestyle and climate, pink is a surprisingly versatile color and can really brighten up a winter outfit. ย My choice happened to be the Zara jacket – mainly as it caught my eye in the sale online – and it may still be available in stores. ย Given the cold today I layered it over my denim jacket and really loved how it worked with blue denim – of course it will be perfect with grey and black too, in fact it has a black lining which works well with the usual winter color palettes.

Dress down Friday.

Well it was quite an eventful day yesterday. ย I have to say I wasn’t nervous, more excited than anything. ย I pierced my own nose years ago at University. ย Crazy, and after yesterday I’ve no idea how I did it myself – I must have been determined and drunk, and the bag of frozen peas must have helped.

I made my decision on Monday that I was finally going to do some piercings, and I made my appointment with Piercing Experience in Atlanta. ย I know piercings aren’t to everyone’s taste, just like tattoos, and oddly much as I love piercings, I’ve never wanted a tattoo mainly as I don’t know what I’d have tattooed – there’s nothing of significance that I want to preserve in ink. ย At first I wasn’t going to have my nose re-pierced, then I thought ‘what the hell, while I’m there why not?’. ย I also had wee diamond tragus and helix piercings.

The photo that inspired me to begin with – I think this looks so pretty:

Christina was amazing – she explained everything, and was incredibly professional. ย It was not intimidating at all, some pain of course – but far less than I’d prepared myself for. ย Piercing Experience don’t use clamps or guns so it’s all completely sterile and as gentle as piercing through a tough piece of cartilage can be! ย I was also really impressed with their choice of jewelry – from fine jewelry like I chose, to tribal and glass jewelry – it’s also all surgical implant grade. ย I’m thrilled – I can’t wait to scare the PTA:)

Now I just have deal with my Husband’s silly little jokes about avoiding magnets and the like – he’ll tire of it soon I hope!

It’s freezing here in Atlanta this week so I wrapped up well yesterday.

Today is very much a dress down Friday after a few glasses of wine last night to calm the nerves:) ย Also – very manky – but I wanted to keep my piercings dry for another day to help with healing so I didn’t wash my hair – that definitely made it a hat day! ย The jumper has to be the BEST cashmere sweater ever. ย It is a men’s Uniqlo crewneck size Medium. ย Perfectly soft and slouchy. ย I want one of these in every color – this is the dark grey.

So share – what did you nab in the Isabel Marant fervour yesterday?! ย I did have a twinge of regret that I missed out on the fringe boots but hey ho…I got new bling instead:)

Where do I start?

Well I’ll start where I left off – our anniversary. ย I am incredibly lucky that I am married to an extremely romantic, generous man. ย He was so giddy about the day unfolding and all his various surprises he could barely contain himself! ย He even created a playlist for me with little clues leading to my surprise gift!

We headed out to dinner to our favorite ‘special occasion’ restaurant – Bacchanalia. ย They do a superb seasonal five course tasting menu and the food is exquisite. ย And how cute – they even surprised us with a little cake!

I wore my Ted Baker taxi cab dress which I adore – it feels elegant yet quirky – it’s so fun to wear. ย This exact version is no longer available but the print must have been so popular they have released a new version here. ย The jacket is a Zara tuxedo jacket from the sale and the wedge boots are also Zara.

OH and I

Before we left for our night out we exchanged gifts. ย I’m a very lucky girl. ย Apparently fifteen years of marriage is a big deal.

I wish I’d known – I thought I was being particularly thoughtful with my gift of a wooly hat and a pair of socks – I kid you not!

On Friday night we headed out again to take Mike for a farewell dinner. ย Another fabulous restaurant and quickly becoming one of my favorites – The Optimist. ย They even had frogs legs on the menu which my daring Husband enjoyed. ย I had the most delicious oysters followed by the most incredible haddock I have ever eaten – and I assure you I know my cod and haddock!

The Optimist

After much debate as to what to wear, and given my late night on Thursday I opted for comfort in the end. ย This is the Zara pyjama suit from last season that I snapped up in the sale, worn with my white heels.

Finally I’ll leave you with a couple of daytime outfits. ย The first was from Friday, shopping in the ย mall with Mike.
