Bomber jackets are everywhere!

I don’t remember a time where a piece of outerwear has so influenced style – okay maybe the parka or the leather jacket – but this year the bomber jacket is available everywhere. Light or padded, plain or embroidered, of every color, you will see a plethora of choice this season. They are surprisingly easy to wear too.

Here I am in my H&M bomber yesterday – at just $59.99 it is great value. Don’t be scared of the red – it works great with blue or black denim. Oh size down too – it fits big. This is a medium.

H&M red

There are so many others that I love that my edit has ended up rather long! Let’s start with this stunning number from Zara. It is reversible – embroidered or plain and is a Limited Edition. At $189 it isn’t cheap but it is stunning.

Zaa Limited Edition

My next place to visit is always ASOS. Sometimes they have too much choice available!

I absolutely love this color – it’s described as silver grey, but here it definitely has some khaki in it too! It looks super and I love the pocket details on the sleeves. Just $73 from ASOS.

Asos luxe

I really like the metallic trim on this one and the nude and yellow is fabulously summery and fun.

Asos yellow

A bit of embroidery this time. I have a thing about peacocks and adore this jacket.

Boohoo peacock

This is kind of special. There won’t be many other polka dot bombers around and French Connection have played an ace here.

French connection spotty

I’ve ordered this one – it’s reduced to $39 and when can I ever resist a bit of animal print?

New Look animal print

There are lots of nudes and pinks available this season – a really flattering color for showing off that holiday tan. This is New Look and just $49.

New Look

Another pink jacket and just $44.

Boohoo pink

On to Mango – and I know there will be more coming from them as the season progresses.

This is in the sale reduced from $149.99 to just $39.99! It will be perfect for taking you into Fall.

mango colorblock

Embroidery and pink – this is beautiful and just $119.99 for a beautifully soft jacket. It looks so comfortable.

Mango embroidered

These next two a lovely and simple – yet will add a little pizzazz to a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt. What more do you need at just $59.99. A great alternative if the H&M red jacket is too much for you.

Mango pink satin Mango blue satin

An evening bomber jacket? Yes with this sequin jacket you will never feel underdressed regardless if you’re wearing it with jeans or over a cocktail dress – I love it.

Mango sequin

Finally good old TopShop – they are a great resource as they really pay attention to the needs of a taller or petite customer too, and most of these jackets are available in Tall, Petite and Regular.

This may be my favorite of them all. It’s reversible with green on one side and black on the other. The green is stunning, and I love the dragon embroidery. It’s also quilted which I love too.

TopSHop reversible

Along with anything animal, camo is a favorite print of mine. This is fab-u-lous.

Topshop camo

Another pink jacket and the quilting makes this one look so luxurious.

TopShop quilted nude

A little lighter and dressier – this lace jacket is a little different, and I love the navy front panels.

TopSHop lace

More pink but combined with a subtle embroidery. Again a great alternative to the H&M jacket if red is just too much.

TopShop embroidered nude

Ending with another favorite. It’s in my basket. Not only is it beautiful but I would wear this all Fall and Winter….

TopShop contrast

So have you ventured into the bomber jacket territory yet? There’s so much choice for fans and those who just want to dip their toes in.

Today the kids are back at school! I have a 5th grader and 3rd grader! For the first time I really wasn’t ready to wave them off – it’s been such a fabulous summer…Sorry for the photo quality today – I’ve dropped my camera and it may be nackered – but the awful humidity also meant I shot this inside!

A new children’s tv presenter?

I only ask this question as those of you who remember Floella Benjamin and Brian Cant may see why my jumpsuit and fringed sneakers made me think of them today! I’m ready to step in a present Play Away anytime!

I am head over heels in love with these new premium leather fringe Converse. SO comfortable – I always seem to take half a size down in Converse – these are a US 8 instead of my usual US 8.5.

My jumpsuit is similar to the navy version that Alex shared a photo of on Instagram. Both are sold out but stalk the navy one – it keeps coming back into stock.

It’s been a pretty cold week again here so I’ve mainly been donning variations of a theme – coats and scarfs! This coat was an absolute bargain in the Zara sale.

A weekend packed with cheer competitions is coming up so it’s going to be fun and busy! I can’t wait for all those sequins and sparkles! So much rehearsal goes into a 2 1/2 minute performance!

My NAP sale picks!

Bags and shoes – that is where my heart lies when it comes to Net-a-porter.com. A reliable online store, great delivery times and great customer service. Not a lot that is ‘cheap’, but if you are after that special present, or just an ‘I got through 2015’ treat here’s what I would pick!

I’m just a little bit obsessed with the Stella McCartney Falabella bag. I used to be one of those that just didn’t get it – faux leather but designer prices? However, since holding one in my hands in Saks a few weeks ago, I completely get it. The ‘pleather’ is so soft and beautifully made, the shape is perfect -a great size for everything, and the chain gives it that edginess that I look for. Not to mention I can wear it as a shoulder bag or tote. I am just in love. NAP has several styles in the sale. My heart is set on the Leopard print that is reduced by 30% but I bloody adore the fur one too!

This fringe one is just beautiful, and possibly, a fabulous upgrade from my H&M bags that I use frequently enough to justify an upgrade! Reduced by a significant 30%.

This tiny fur is a great evening bag and is reduced by 30%.

fur falabella

Oh be still my beating heart – can I justify a fur bag?

fur large falabella

This is the one I adore – extremely versatile. I love it. 30% discounted.

leopard falabella

More leopard print but this time McQ Alexander McQueen – I love the tote I have and I am sure the quality of this will be equal, and it is 30% off.

Mcq leopard pring

Finally I think this Alexander Wang camera bag is a great ‘about town’ bag, not to mention it provides me with my ‘I love everything grey’! Reduced, again, by 30%.

AWang camera bag

Yes – this is still eye-wateringly expensive in the sale – but I LOVE the Givenchy Pandora so much and this cobalt blue is so statement – it could carry you through the summer too worn with reds, purples and corals. My Husband says he refuses to buy bags for me, so maybe I will just have to buy it and get on with it! Reduced by 30%.

Ok so now footwear. Of course the Golden Goose are my first choice/recommendation.

I have these and love them – a perfect neutral but with a little pearl effect on the toe and tongue – just beautiful.

The sparkly low tops are gorgeous. I am a convert to the low top – I still prefer the ‘slide’ style above but these in blue are stunning and 40% off.

Stella McCartney again now – these platforms are SUPERB.

For those of us with simpler tastes there are also some Nikes and Adidas in the sale. I have both of these styles and they are fabulous!

So pipe dreaming or not it’s still fun to have a look!

We’re having a quiet day today after a fun Thanksgiving. I’m sitting here eating cheese on toast, with a mug of tea listening to BBC Radio 2. Bliss:)

Man’s best friend

The 26th August was National Dog Day – a day to celebrate and encourage adoption of dogs everywhere. Since we have been in Atlanta we have adopted 4 boxers. Tennyson is our only dog right now and we adopted him almost 3 years ago. The kids have been asking for more dogs for some time, and since Rosie passed away I know Tennyson has missed a friend. So in our usual crazy, impulsive fashion we have decided to adopt not just one more, but two more boxers. We’re not sure which exact dogs Stanley and Stella are yet – the names are picked but not the dogs! We have two coming to stay with us this week and fingers crossed all will get along and they will stay for the long haul! Wish us luck!

In the meantime we celebrated Tennyson this week with lots of love and kisses!

Thursday was chaotic – the school had a power cut so I ended up having an impromptu shopping trip with Poppy before heading for a haircut. Poppy as ever ended up returning home with something new – new Sam Edelman Pettys in the Labor Day sale – like mother, like daughter! They are lovely with a glitter heel and great for her to wear with jeans or skirts.

Chadd did an amazing job as ever on my hair. I went for the undercut again so I can pretend I am super cool and trendy for my blogger party next weekend in NYC at the start of Fashion Week. I may have acquired a new dress to wear too – but you’ll have to wait and see!

Now I’m off to host a sleep over for the kids and enjoy a thoroughly relaxing Labor weekend before we are overwhelmed with dogs 🙂

Scents and sensibility.

I’m off clothes.  I know I never thought I’d see the day either.  Bored, bored, bored with everything I see in the stores or online.  Maybe I have just over done it.  For the first time in a LONG time I am perfectly happy with all my choices when I walk into my closet.  I want nor need a thing.  I am instead indulging in products – more specifically scents – perfumes and essential oils.

I wear perfume everyday, but I am a woman of few scents.  Chanel Coco for date nights, and then either Pacifica Tuscan blood orange or YSL Paris for the daytime depending what mood I am in.  I have worn Paris for YEARS – I first bought a bottle from duty free on the ferry to France when I was about 14!

Perfumes to me are a bit like underwear – as long as it works why spend money on it?  I do like to splash out a little more on my night time perfume but not a ridiculous amount.  However, I am contemplating purchasing the following:

The classic Shalimar by Guerlain:

Shalimar

Or Un Jardin Sur Le Toit by Hermés which is gorgeous for summer:

Hermes

If any of you have worn these I’d love to know what you think.

While I was researching scents I stumbled across some old favorites – a couple of which I ordered.

Giorgio Beverly Hills:

Giorgio BH

and Lou Lou by Cacharel:

LOU LOU FEM

Both of these scents are incredibly nostalgic.  I used to wear them in sixth form – again probably duty free purchases from day trips to France.  As soon as I opened the boxes and smelled them it transported me back to nights out in Bury – the clothes, the people, the pubs!  Not always what you are looking for in a perfume it has to be said:)  Also they are much sweeter than I remember – my nose has definitely matured!  I’ll wear them for now if only to remember the Hare and Hounds – but I probably won’t buy them again…the Hermés looks good value now.

Moving on from perfumes I’ve recently been treating my olfactory system to some essential oils.  I’ve been struggling to sleep well and thought I’d give Lavender a try so I am going to burn some before bed and then put a few drops on my pillow.  I also LOVE citrus oils so I treated myself to some Tangerine and Sweet Orange – so now I can be calmed, cheered and brightened – according to the labels at least!  I’ll let you know if my sleep improves.  Again I’d love to know if any of you have dabbled in aromatherapy.  I’ve just bought a book too, so it may become an new little hobby for me…namaste….

This week has seen me having to adapt to rain and now 80 degree sunshine.

Yesterday I headed to work in a jacket then changed into a jumper when I got home – to be honest most of the time I change into some kinds of sweatpants or workout gear.

Starting to panic about packing!

In less than 3 weeks I’ll be heading to the UK for what has now become my annual meet up with my blogging friends.  To make the most of the CHILD FREE trip across the Atlantic I’ll be staying with my Mum and Dad for a few days too, and hanging out with my brother and sister.  To say I am excited is an understatement. (Caveat for when reading in years to come :  Poppy and Hugh I will miss you LOTS but Mommy just needs some girl time sometimes! xx).

I have of course already started to panic about packing.  An extensive wardrobe really only makes things more challenging.  I have – don’t laugh – started a spreadsheet that itemizes bottoms, tops, sweaters, shoes and accessories.  It is quite a long spreadsheet and needs some – shall we say – fine tuning?

The advantage of making a spreadsheet is that it can identify gaps in your travel wardrobe.  Now as you all know far too well there are few ‘gaps’ in my closet, but one is a practical, warm, trendy coat.  I have lots of wool coats but they are quite heavy for wearing when walking around London, plus they are harder to roll up and pack , and also less comfortable for layering.  Just play along with me please…

Given my above reasoning I realized that what I really ‘need’ is a parka.  Not a wax, storm proof parka, but a lighter weight, lined parka that will be cosy, plus has room to layer over a leather or denim jacket.  I narrowed my choices down to the following:

The Asos Cocoon Parka:

Cocoon parka

The Asos parka with detachable lining:

Asos Parka

It was a tough decision – there are pros and cons to each.  The idea of a detachable lining makes the second a great option, as does the ability to cinch the waist, whereas the cocoon version has less going on.  I polled my fellow bloggers and they were no bloody help as opinions were equally divided.  In the end I closed my eyes and picked one, and now the cocoon parka is on it’s way to me!  I hope it will work well to layer over my AllSaints leather jacket.

Today I am back to black again, with a touch of leopard and red:

Sneakers – red converse // Jeans – Zara coated skinnies // Shirt – Men’s Gap white shirt // Sweater – Uniqlo cashmere men’s crew neck // Jacket – AllSaints Monument jacket // Hat – J.Crew (old – similar here)

Finally yesterday with a glimmer of sun I bared the legs – albeit just the knees:

Boots – Stuart Weitzman Nude nubuck 5050s // Dress – ASOS

I’ve been pinning some packing tips but if you have any suggestions or tips please share – after all these years I am still crap at selecting a capsule wardrobe for traveling.  I’m always terrified of leaving something behind that I end up really wanting to wear.  OK, ‘terrified’ may be stretching it…

Well they’re not clothes…

To my horror I discovered that the kids don’t go back to school till Tuesday!  I thought I had my routine back tomorrow!  Don’t get me wrong we’ve had an amazing break – but 2 weeks is plenty thanks.  Of course the other issue at stake is the fact that Atlanta is due to get temperatures of -10 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday – yes I said Fahrenheit!  This means that school may be out anyway due to severe weather – God help me.  I will not complain about the cold, especially as I am currently watching the NFL playoffs – Green Bay are at home and the stadium is full – talk about risking frostbite!  I’m not kidding when I tell you they are Arctic conditions.

We did venture out yesterday before the cold arrives.  It was one of those lovely spontaneous outings.  We mooched around a couple of boutiques and furniture stores and then took the kids for ice cream – even when it’s cold they won’t refuse it!   I suggested our initial destination, a fabulous mid-century modern furniture store in Inman Park called City Issue.  I mentioned a long time ago that I was looking out for my perfect vanity.  Well before the holidays I noticed a desk on their Facebook page.  I’d long ago realized that anything described as a ‘vanity’ or ‘dressing table’ was going to be too ornate for my tastes.  A contemporary, slim line desk seemed the perfect option – if I could find one.  Well after a teeny, tiny bit of ummming and ahhing this beautiful Danish masterpiece is now mine.  I am in love with her.  I love the fact that she has been used before, and I like to imagine that love letters were once written on her.  I’m using an IKEA chair till I find the perfect partner for her – but I quite like the contrast of the wood with perspex.

vanity vanity 1

After arranging my new love and organizing the drawers it was time to eat.  I want to share my brilliant new gadget with you.  As you know I’m trying the Paleo diet – I’m really enjoying cooking so much, but I do miss pasta and rice sometimes.  My rice substitute is ground cauliflower (blend it), fried with onions – it is delicious.  As for pasta I’ve tried spaghetti squash but there is a lot of prep required.  Today I used my spiral vegetable cutter to make noodles from zucchini/courgette – it worked a treat!! I LOVE it!  It comes with 3 blades and lets you cut ribbons too.  I made a thai shrimp curry using them – just throw them in at the end so they don’t get soggy.  DELICIOUS!

noodles thai

My final recent acquisition is the Conair InfinitPro spin air brush.  Many of my UK blogging friends have raved about the Babyliss Big Hair version – most recently Trea.  For the life of me I couldn’t find it anywhere here.  Then I realized it is branded differently – Conair own Babyliss and here it is called the Conair InfinitiPro spin air brush.  I do as Trea does – I dry my hair with my ghd dryer till it is about 80% dry and then use the spin brush.  It catches hold of my hair nicely and works a treat on my shorter length hair giving me lovely smooth locks.  I highly recommend it – my only criticism is that it seems quite loud after the quietness of my ghd dryer – but the price point is significantly different too!

Infinit pro

So there we go – a vanity, a vegetable slicer and a hair styler – and like I said none of them can be worn so I’ve not broken any shopping rules yet – though admittedly I’m still trying to determine what those rules are for 2014 – I cannot subscribe to any kind of total abstinence.

Here’s my outfit from yesterday.  I bought the Only jeans back in the sale from ASOS before the Holidays.  I was trying to resist, but a couple of the AllWornOutBlog.com girls (here and here) and Avril all looked amazing in them, so I resisted no more.

So now to watch the end of the football and do some menu planning for next week.  Let’s hope we don’t get iced in as I might have to crack the wine open in desperation!

After the boys of summer have gone.

Labor weekend is traditionally the ‘end’ of summer – though we get at least another month of summer-like weather.  Having said that we have woken up this morning to torrential rain – the garden is a mud pit – so much for our pool plans today.  Hey ho, we’ve still had a fun packed weekend to say farewell to summer with a bang.

On Friday I caught up with a friend for lunch who I haven’t seen for probably eight years or so.  We used to work together, then she moved to D.C. to study law.  It was great fun to see where the years have taken us and we talked and talked as you can imagine!  I can’t wait to make it a regular lunch date.

Saturday started early.  Every year on Labor weekend the weirdest people flock to Atlanta.  I have a strange affinity for these weird folk.  They are the Dragoncon delegates.  Downtown Atlanta becomes populated by Klingons, wookiees and stormtroopers for the weekend.  Fantastic fun.

Hugh wasn’t that impressed by the early start:

Darth Vader must have heard about the Death Star – he looked a little dejected.

I didn’t get a full outfit image that day – I assure you I didn’t dress up – though I’m tempted for next year:)  I wore the same as here though – the grey Asos t-shirt dress – with my Golden Goose sneakers (similar here).

Last night we headed to the Braves game.  It’s such a fun thing to do with the children now they can sit through nine innings.  The music, the games, the food all take precedent over the actual baseball game – a good thing really as we lost.  Poppy is now an expert at gaining enough attention to get us on the big screen with the FanCam – twice last night!  I really need to make more of an effort for Braves games with the amount of exposure she is getting us!  We were even lucky enough to have a free post game concert with Big & Rich.  Baseball really is the best value when it comes to family entertainment – fours hours of relaxation and fun for $10 each!

No rest for the wicked.

I’m sneaking in 5 minutes to myself to do this post.  Remind me – the other day I said things slowed down in the summer?  Not so today – camp, dentist appointments for the kids, lunch, then a play date here for Poppy.  Doesn’t sound too much does it, but I feel like I’ve already earned my wine.  I’m telling you stay at home Moms/Dads are goddesses/gods in my eyes.  I do not have the requisite levels of patience to do this every day:)  Having said that I’m having much fun watching them wear each other out in the paddling pool outside.

Instagram weekend round up.

Happy Easter all!  I am sitting here typing while the loin of pork roasts.  I always slip a few slithers of garlic in it so it smells amazing – hhhhmmmm!  I was contemplating roasting a leg of lamb – it seems more appropriate at Easter – but I always find the left over pork easier to use up in a Mexican dish later in the week.  I’d better get a few more spin sessions in before the bikinis come out for Spring break!:)

I thought rather than cracking open a bottle of red before dinner is ready, I’d update you with some weekend outfits instead.

My son was off from school on Friday for Easter so we headed out to Target for some fun shopping – well kind of – I basically needed to buy more Mini Eggs before they sell out till next year!

I’m not much of a hat wearer, but I fell in love with these Mossimo straw Fedoras.  Still not convinced I would ever wear them so they didn’t make it home with me, but I might try them again – they’d be great on the beach!IMG_3520 IMG_3522

This bracelet brings me so much joy.  It’s an original Susie Ho design and it reminds me of the fantastic time we all had in London on our blogger meet back in February.IMG_3534

MM giggled at me on Saturday morning for being ‘so dressed up’ with no where to go.  Well I did take Poppy to her Zumba class so surely that counts?  I love this M&S cardigan – it makes a casual outfit feel a little more ‘put together’.IMG_3536 IMG_3538

Trousers – Zara // Boots – Isabel Marant Dickers // T-shirt – Forever21 // Cardigan – Marks and Spencer

I also nipped into the Mall later in the day, so obviously I had to take a peek in Zara.  I’d fallen in love with this jacket online and, fortuitously, they had my size in store.  Would have been silly not to have brought it home, no?

IMG_3542

Last night MM and I went out for dinner and drinks to our favorite bar.  I normally choose my ‘going out’ attire by selecting the one item I really want to wear and building the outfit around it.  Last night I really wanted to wear these Zara trousers.  I’ve had them a while and took them all the way to the UK and back without them being worn.  It turned into a perfect opportunity to pair them with my white pumps.  I LOVE these shoes.  Whether you like the outfit or not, it was one of those times where once I was ready I felt great:)  I’m convinced the Saturday 8am spin class helps psychologically too!
