Harem pants

I’ve never made a secret of my love for harem pants. They are so comfortable, and these days there are so many options available that if a full on drop crotch isn’t for you then you can opt for a smarter jogging pant. I’m wearing mine today as it is going to be in the 80’s and their fluidity keeps me cool all day. In fact they are the first thing I pack for vacations as they are perfect for traveling in too. You can then dress them up for evening wear with a lovely top and even a light jacket. The footwear options are endless – sneakers, sandals and even heels all look great with them.

The pair I am wearing today is from ASOS – just $28! They have an elastic waist that can be folded over to be worn lower on the hips if needed.

I am waiting to take receipt of these tomorrow – a little lower crotch which I love..

Etsy is a fabulous source for harem pants. I’ve had some great purchases in the past and these caught my eye.

H&M offer some wonderful choices as well. These are similar to the ASOS pair I’m wearing – less drop crotch, more smart jogger.

H&M1

I have this pair of joggers – and they are definitely joggers so better worn with sneakers but I adore the drop crotch and the fabric is great! Perfect paired with a simple white tee and leather jacket.

Finally if you are in the UK I hear great things about the Hush harems. These have a fold over waistband and they look so comfortable. They are available in black. olive, navy, charcoal and blue. They will deliver to the US for £12 but it is not DPD, so make sure you know what customs will charge you for your order.

New in from H&M

I’ve seen two beautiful ladies wear this top in blue this week – Frances and Dresslikeamum. It’s still not hit the US website BUT the yellow and white have. If you’re darker like me I think both colors will look great! Personally I think the cobalt is beautiful but best left to the blondes!

I also LOVE these dungarees. I’ve been searching for a more boyfriend/slouchy fit pair for some time and these look perfect. I also like the thinner straps – more flattering on a larger bust.

H&M overalls dungarees

Finally these are sitting in my basket. I love white jeans all year round – especially distressed ones for wearing with a pretty top. These look lovely and high waisted too.

The pinstripe blazer

I absolutely love the warmer weather. It means the coats can be replaced with a blazer. A blazer can transform an entire outfit. If you pick one that fits well they are beautifully flattering. I find they give me shape by enhancing my shoulders and giving me a waist. I stand taller when I wear a blazer – and you can’t beat a striking pinstripe blazer when you need that extra pizzazz.

I own the first two here from Mango. They are amazing quality and in the sale. I am wearing the navy today – and it’s what I would call chalkstripe rather than pinstripe, and it has a pop up grey felt collar. It’s now just $47.99.

Mango pinstripe jacket

The grey is lovely – I don’t normally go for double breasted but I love wearing this one with black or grey jeans and this is now just $39.99.

mango grey

I’m probably going to order this off-white jacket as it is perfect with blue jeans for spring and just $39.99 – reduced by 60%.

This grey blazer is reduced to $128 from $321 on Asos and I love the darker grey.

Asos jacket

This is a beautiful alternative to a blazer from TopShop – I think this would look amazing with leather leggings.

TopShop pinstripe

Another from TopShop but I can only see it on the Nordstrom website here. I love the long lapels on it.

Now for the pricier versions. A blazer is always worth the investment for a fabulous cut and gorgeous fabric. This is TopShop Unique and lighter weight for the summer.

Finally I just love the styling of this blazer by Maje. Less structured than some of the others, again with more of a chalkstripe than pinstripe, and it’s just beautiful. It’s final sale right now.

So here I am in my Mango jacket. I subconsciously chose to wear it for a teacher conference today – the Husband asked if I was having school uniform flash backs!

The humble sweatshirt

Where would we be without the sweatshirt? In recent years it has morphed from athletic wear to day wear to going out wear – that even allows you to share opinions with motifs and messages. Personally I prefer a simple sweatshirt with no graphics, although I do own a couple of motif sweatshirts. They are perfect for layering, or just throwing on when you lack inspiration. The sweatshirt can be worn with anything from denim shorts and jeans through to leather trousers and skirts, and you can’t beat a simple grey sweatshirt paired with sequin leggings.

First up some exciting news from H&M – a fabulous source for sweatshirts. There is up to 60% off online today PLUS the US can now return online purchases in store!!! Hooray!!! At last! Previously we have had to mail them back and were consequently charged a restocking fee – so I am thrilled now we have the option of returning in store.

The sweatshirt I am wearing today is H&M and I love it – it is really substantial and the quality is great. I think I paid around $30 for it. I sized up too as I can’t stand tight fitting sweatshirts! For me they have to be slouchy and oversized.

I love this one with the zip detail – slightly cropped too and perfect for layering.

H&M zip sweatshirt

The lacing detail on this one gives it a unique twist.

H&M lacing

This one is very similar to mine, it may even be the same and is just $24.99 – it comes in pale pink and black too.

This little number is currently just $5.99 in the grey and $9.99 in other colors!!!

Rebecca has this red sweatshirt and I love the washed red – it is currently reduced to $9.99 with all sizes available.

Now if you are in the UK you are probably aware of Selfish Mother. They are committed to genuine sustainability through their supply chain. Their tees and sweatshirts are made at a Fair Wear Foundation certified factory in Bangladesh, which means it is vetted for good working conditions and fair wages. The designs are all screen-printed in London and each different design contributes profits to a different charity. They ship to the US too.

Purchasing the Maman sweatshirt contributes to Help Refugees UK. £10 from every MAMAN tee and £15 from every MAMAN sweatshirt will go to support this cause.

I love the logo on this one – so appropriate for me 😉 All profits* from sales of WINGING IT designs go to KIDS CHARITY UK, who do amazing work with disabled children and their families. KIDS not only helps young people age 0-25 but also the people caring for them on a daily basis More info here. *When they say ‘all profits’ this means £15 from the sale of each sweat going straight to help others!

This is the version I own – I did say I had a motif sweatshirt in there somewhere! All profits* from sales of Mother designs go to Women for Women International – an charity that helps women in 8 war-torn regions rebuild their lives through training programs. More info here.  *When they say ‘all profits’ this means £15 from the sale of each sweat going straight to help others!

Now Zara have some fun offerings this season – though they may be causing a little trouble with this Elle Macpherson sweat – it is very similar to Reformation’s Cindy Crawford sweatshirt that retailed for $118!

elle macpherson sweatshirt

I love this oversized motif sweatshirt which is available in other colors too.

Mango of course have some great options to choose from – plain or graphic. These are my picks.

I need one of each color in this sweatshirt with motivational quotes!

Mango perfect sweathsirt

I love the shape of this one and the fact it doesn’t have cuffs.

If you quite like the idea of a motif, but not emblazoned across your chest, this is a great alternative. It comes in white and black too with different copy.

I adore the lower neckline on this and the slight pleating at the sides. Perfect for layering and the grey is also gorgeous.

I love the lace detail on this one and it is currently 35% off.

The glove shoe

So yes you’ve already probably formed an opinion on this style of shoe – what I like to call the block heeled ballerina. Many vehemently hate them, many love them, regardless the ‘granny’ shoe, as it has become known, looks like it is here to stay for a while. I have to say I am rather taken with them. I think they look great as an alternative to the sock boot with a cropped, kick flare. Also, they look rather neat on my peculiar feet. I like a high vamp that conceals my toes and I find them ridiculously comfortable. Given their comfort it’s not surprising I thought all the flight attendants on my Virgin Atlantic flight were wearing very cool cabin shoes, you can’t deny the similarity!

The top pick of the high street is the TopShop Juno. I actually have these in a beautiful red color that doesn’t appear to be available anymore – but they do now come in a fabulous orange – how awesome will they look with tanned legs!?

The pair from Zara were the first that caught my eye. Beautifully soft leather in a lovely neutral ecru color.

I absolutely love these from Mango – tan suede will go with everything and see you throughout the summer.

I no longer see the H&M black suede pair online, which I am wearing today, but they have them in beautiful neutral light mole here on the UK site.

Finally my absolutely dream pair of pumps. Such a stunning color for summer – but pricey – so only commit once you know the style is for you! The Maryam Nassir Zadeh Roberta pump.

So as I say, a love them or hate them kind of shoe and I get both sides, but I’m going with them – anything that offers comfort these days is embraced!

I’m actually amazed I can move today. Saturday was spent in the treetops, navigating rope bridges and zip lines for my newly turned 8 year old. It was terrifying and boy did my arms and core get a workout! The things you do for your kids!

Hands free shopping

By now you’re all aware of my love for a great handbag, or purse as we call them here. Usually the bigger the better. However, I have recently been won over by the charms of a cross body bag – in this case the smaller the better. I took one to the UK with me – it was perfect – it meant I could carry a larger one on the plane and pack the small cross body. I used the cross body each time I went out shopping, thus freeing up my hands for a cup of coffee on the go, fiddling with change for public transport, and carrying the essential purchases. It fits a small coin purse, a compact, a lipstick and my phone – all I need for a day out shopping.

Now when I began researching this post I had a few bags in mind that I knew I wanted to share with you. Given the current popularity of the Gucci Soho (I think I know at least five friends who have one) I wasn’t surprised to find that there is no shortage of beautiful bags, of all price points to choose from, so bear with me as my edit is quite long.

First up the J.Crew Marlo. It is beautiful and it’s simplicity really reminds me of a Mansur Gavriel bag. In the US there is currently 20% off with code GETSHOPPING making it just $78.40 – a great price for a well made, versatile, leather bag that will age beautifully. It’s available in four colors plus leopard print which is slightly more.

Now when I am shopping for bags, shoes or jeans I never make a purchase without first checking out TheOutnet.com. You never know what gems you’ll find. Unfortunately the stock on the UK and US site can vary drastically with some brands only being available in some regions. Here are the beauties I uncovered today – they are new on the site too.

I love Rag & Bone for their shoes and this bag of theirs is gorgeous. Really urban looking and not covered in branding. The grey with black is perfect. It’s listed on TheOutnet at 50% off retail.

This mini bucket bag from Tory Burch is a great color – so versatile and the quality will be fabulous.

Screen Shot 2016-03-04 at 9.44.31 AM

This is the same bag but maybe in a more summer friendly color?

Screen Shot 2016-03-04 at 9.44.46 AM

Again a bag from Tory Burch – this one is particularly appealing with the top handle. I love my PS1 as it can be carried on the shoulder or in the hand. Be quick though at just $163 (50% off) it won’t stay in stock long.

Screen Shot 2016-03-04 at 9.45.04 AM

This Sandro bag is a real little gem – such a great cobalt color for summer, and just $138 (50% off).

Screen Shot 2016-03-04 at 9.45.30 AM

This bucket bag is also from Sandro – also a great choice as it has a longer strap and a top handle. It’s on TheOutnet at $278 (60% off) – amazing value for a leather bag from a great brand. This will last you a lifetime.

Screen Shot 2016-03-04 at 9.45.42 AM

Now Mango – oh lordy Mango. I swear I could spend my earnings at Mango this season. They are so on the ball with their offerings. So excuse me – the list of gorgeousness is long!

This stunning little number has some studding and comes in white and black too.

Mango stud cross body

I love everything about this one – the quilting, the tassel, the chain strap – again it comes in black too.

Mango quilted cross body

This Chloe-esque number is just $11.99 – yes $11.99 in the sale!

Mango stud cross body sale

Again I love a chain strap and I am really drawn to the cobalt blue but this bag comes in other colors too. It is beautifully neat.

Mango small cross body bag

You can’t go wrong with pink in the summer – go on make the boys wink 😉

Mango pink double compartment

Now another sales gem – I looked at this over and over again at full price, it is leather and now just $35.99 reduced from $119!!

Mango leopard cross body

Another animal print leather bag here, though less rigid looking.

Mango leather cross body

What can I say but top handle – the perfect combination of a hands free bag with a lady like appearance.

Mango handle cross body

This chain bag is a sales bargain as well – it’s slightly bigger than some of the others but reduced 70% to $23.99.

Mango hain cross body

Now if this isn’t the perfect Gucci Soho dupe I don’t know what is…it comes in off white too and it’s leather.

Mango Gucci dupe

Loving the clasp detail and fringing on this bag in the sale at just $23.99.

Mango fringe cross body

The shape of this flap bag is fabulous – it’s quite deep and the yellow is great for Easter best! It also comes in black and white.

Mango flap bag

Or if you prefer a saddle bag how about this one?

Mango chloe dupe

This one is a classic – so neat, also available in tan.

Mango buckle flap bag

Phew – are you still with me? I thought it only fair now to add some lust items, given the current popularity of the Gucci cross body.

Here it is – the Gucci Soho, perfect proportions, a zip closure and tassel detail.

Gucci Soho

This is the version I have – it is a flap closure rather than a zip, with the chain strap – which is basically why I chose it. Now the only draw back is I have to take my phone case off to fit my iPhone 6 plus in it  – first world problems indeed.

Gucci Soho small

Another version with the classic Gucci stripes.

Gucci Linea

Fancy something a little different? I adore this Balenciaga – and what a great crimson color!

Balenciaga

This bag from APC is a beautiful shape, minimal, clean and neat.

Of course we can also add a bit of humor with the Anya Hindmarch smiley face bag – but I really do wonder why her prices are so high?

Anya Hindmarch

So there you go – plenty of food for thought. Not only are they fab for shopping but I love a cross body bag when traveling – they’re great for keeping close by when you’re moving through crowded areas.

This weekend is going to be crazy here – having just about recovered from the jet lag, Hugh turns 8 on Sunday so we have a weekend packed full of fun and surprises for him! I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

Pretty tops

It’s definitely warming up here in Atlanta, and I was actually quite surprised how mild and sunny London was while I was there. The sun has got me thinking of all things spring – especially now we’re in March – our spring break is only a month away! The perfect – dare I say transitional – attire in spring is a light top, jeans and a jacket. I have always loved a feminine top, something that can be worn with jeans and later with shorts. They are perfect under a blazer too on a cooler day.

Pinterest 1 pinterest 2 pinterest 3 pinterest 4 pinterest 5 pinterest 6

(images from Pinterest)

My go to store for tops is Mango. I find their fit more generous than Zara and the choice more varied. This season Mango and H&M have hit the ball out of the park with their selection of feminine tops and blouses.

If you’re not into full on lace this is the perfect compromise. It is available in black too.

openwork trim blouse

This openwork detail top is so pretty. It is the perfect shape with loose sleeves for those of us that no longer want to wear sleeveless tops. It will be perfect with distressed denim shorts and simple thong sandals.

openwork detail top

I particularly love this lace edges top – firstly it has no buttons which tend to gape on me, but also because it is beautifully simple with just the trim detailing. Love it.

lace edges top

This embroidered cotton top is probably my favorite. I love the square cut and the neckline. It also comes in black. I have them both in my cart!

This crochet top is stunning – I would wear it with a white cami underneath with straight legged, distressed jeans. I think it is the perfect throw on for a spring evening heading out for a cocktail.

Crochet poncho

This is just beautiful. The sleeves are so delicate. I think it is the perfect holiday top worn with black skinnies or black shorts. It’s also in my cart! Mango I hope you do a code soon!!

Blonda panel blouse

This beaded chiffon blouse comes in three gorgeous jewel tones. Dress it down under a long cardigan, or wear it out under a black tuxedo blazer.

Moving on to H&M – now they sell out fast online – but these are my favorites.

This shirt is super popular and I couldn’t find it in any of the London stores I visited. There are some sizes left online and I would size up so it can be worn loose over jeans.

H&M lace blouse

This jersey lace top really appeals to me as I like a little stretch in tops, but it is still more feminine than a regular long sleeved tee.

Finally – this is new online here and I just love, love, love the bell sleeves. An absolute dream at just $29.99!

So will I be able to hold out for some discount codes!? If the weather continues to improve I fear not!

As for what I’m wearing today – I’m afraid I am still going for ultimate comfort while the jet lag passes. This morning’s gym session may have helped or I’ll be snoozing on the sofa by 3pm!

Don’t shop in the US right now if you’re traveling to Europe!

A while ago I wrote a post that had actually been requested by quite a few readers – What to buy in the UK vs. he USA. Sitting on the loooonnnngg flight home yesterday I thought it was time to update you all in case you are planning a trip from one side of the Atlantic to the other.

I think there is still a common misconception that the USA is much cheaper than the UK. Right now it isn’t! A pound will currently only buy approx. 1.4 dollars. Two years ago it would buy about 1.75, and even last year it was around 1.6. When you remember to add the approx. 8% sales tax to the US sticker prices, on top of the current exchange rate, it means that several, in fact many items are much cheaper in the UK!

Take for example my incredibly indulgent purchase in Selfridges on Friday. A Givenchy Pandora bag. In the US it retails for $1950 + 8% sales tax. In the UK it is £1155 – approx. $1625 – significantly cheaper!

Cosmetics are also cheaper – admittedly many of they high street brands that I buy are British – such as Nip + Fab and Soap and Glory. As Boots always seem to do a 3 for 2 deal or some sort of discounting make sure you stock up there and not here in the USA. Having said that it is still the case that many high end cosmetics are cheaper in the US – a Mac lipstick is $16 here and at least £16 in the UK.

High street brands are much cheaper in the UK. A pair of jeans cost me £29.99 in Zara – the same pair here is $49.99 + the sales tax (sales tax varies state to state, and even county to county here).

So while there is so much uncertainty about the UK Brexit I would encourage you to do more sight seeing than shopping on your trip to NYC! Your pounds aren’t going to buy you many dollars!

I’m back in the office today – albeit very jet lagged. After a 9 hour flight yesterday (highly recommend all 3 films I watched – The Big Short, Black Mass and Carol) I went straight to the polling station to cast my vote. I still get tremendously excited about the privilege of voting with my new citizenship. My lovely Husband treated me to a huge Thai takeaway and I hugged my children tightly. It’s lovely to go away, but it’s really lovely to come home, especially when the sun is shining and the blossom is blooming!

The London trip!!

Sorry for my unusually long absence – I normally try to keep blogging while I’m back in the UK but this year my trip is shorter and I’ve been busier! I arrived last Monday morning and then Tuesday my sister and I took my Mum out to Manchester for an early Mother’s Day shopping trip and lunch. It was fabulous fun and we had lunch at a great restaurant, The Alchemist, in Spinningfields. Lots of sharing plates and prosecco!

The Alchemist

The shopping continued though we were quite restrained! We did end up back in Selfridges for a little more prosecco before heading back home. My poor Dad was at home waiting for his supper 🙂 Apparently I led everyone astray…

Wednesday was spent pottering at home with my nephews – they grow up so fast and it was lovely to spend time with them – though they are always a tad cautious to start with – Auntie Jo is a bit mad apparently…

On Thursday it was time to head to Laaandaan town. Having lived there for about 8 years in the 90s it’s hard to explain the feeling of ‘heading home’, but at the same time feeling like a tourist! My heart was pounding with excitement when I got off the train at Euston. On Thursday night I headed out south of the river and met up with some old work friends from my graduate training days at PwC. We haven’t seen each other for years and it was so lovely to catch up. I walked across the Millennium Bridge from St. Paul’s to get there and it was simply breathtaking!

St. Paul's Cathedral The Shard, Tower Bridge

On Friday morning I popped by to see Liz, while detoxing with a run through Green Park.

Buckingham Palace

Saturday was the MAIN event! Our annual blogger meet up. I’ve made the most amazing friends from blogging and these are truly some of the most important women in my life. I always plan on taking a tonne of photos but once the prosecco starts flowing we always end up forgetting. The afternoon flies by! I can’t even begin to count the number of topics we covered – none of them fashion related! 😉 Thanks SO much to the following girls for making it such a special day!

I’ll be back on the other side of the Atlantic tomorrow ready to place my US vote on Super Tuesday, once I’ve hugged my Husband and kids tightly!

Stubborn as a…

…Mule – only we’re talking about the trend for the flat leather variety that seems to be with us to stay in 2016, not the ass.

15 years ago, one of my first purchases on this side of the Atlantic, was a pair of Kenneth Cole leather, flat mules. I LOVED them. They were cheap as chips from a shoe outlet, beautiful leather, and the perfect shoe for my new US ‘business casual’ attire. They hid the toes in the absence of a pedicure, yet were cool enough to wear in the heat here. I have to say I am rather pleased that they are back on trend.

My favorite pair are these from Rag & Bone. I have some Net-a-porter.com credit to use and once I’ve returned from my UK trip I’ve a feeling these may be ordered. I adore the suede and leather combination.

Rag and Bone

This croc effect shoe from Robert Clergerie is gorgeous, and similar to those in one of the images from Pinterest. Much more masculine than the Rag & Bone mule.

The Pierre Hardy mule in tan suede is stunning. Very chic and minimal.

For some high street options take a look at the TopShop Kola – I understand it fits small – but it is beautiful and I especially love the bordeaux.

The Lauryn mule from Via Spiga is a classic. I love the toe shape – also it is currently 40% off!

Urban Outfitters carry them in this fabulous black and white print too.

So what do you think – have you bought into the pedi saving mule or are they too much like house slippers for you?
