A visitor from afar.

The children are very excited today.  Grandpa arrives this evening.  Mike is my father-in-law and it’s odd to realize I’ve known him for over 20 years.  It shouldn’t seem odd as that’s how long I’ve known MM* and Mike has been a constant in my adult life, and a tremendous influence on me.

Firstly I am entirely indebted to him for raising the fabulous man that I married.  His curiosity for the world at large and his fearlessness have certainly rubbed off on both his sons.  Secondly I owe him much for helping MM and I retain our sanity while we were impoverished in London.  He often visited us and filled us to the brim with indulgent meals at London restaurants that we could never have afforded on our own.  He even took us to France a couple of times, along with my brother-in-law, where we wined and dined.  From day one he has always included me in the family clan and showed no hesitation in introducing this bird from Bury to the rest of his family.  I certainly felt welcomed into the melting pot of eccentricity that I married into.

Mike makes me feel like nothing is impossible – another trait inherited by his sons – and probably one of the reasons MM pursues his entrepreneurial projects.  None of them like to conform and it is that maverick style that I adore in all 3 of them.  It’s odd to think of Mike as a maverick when he spent most of his working life in the British Civil Service.  He can’t tell me what he did – he’d have to shoot me – but I’ve guessed it must have been pretty important stuff that allowed him to travel and raise his family for a time in Cyprus before it was divided in two and they were airlifted out, and then later in Hong Kong.  Mike’s generosity was again displayed when he gifted us with tickets to Northern Cyprus for our Honeymoon to allow MM to show me why this beautiful place is so important to them.

Mike’s wife and soulmate, and my would have been mother-in-law, Pat, passed away after a short illness back in 1991, about a month after I met MM.  I never got to meet her but I often imagine us getting on like a house on fire.  I like to think I am like her in some ways – maybe not, I’ll never know, but I do know she liked a party and was extremely social.  After all these years we talk about her more often especially when the children ask why they only have one Nana.  I love listening to MM tell them stories of his childhood that include her.  I no longer feel like I’m walking on eggshells and I always learn something new.

When Mike retired early instead of tending his garden and picking up his pipe and slippers he decided it was time to see more of the world and he put his backpack on and set off on his own.  Inspiring stuff especially considering the countries he traveled to.  I often imagine, like some le Carré novel, that he already had contacts around the globe.  What I know for sure is that when he returned he had made friends in places as disparate as Japan and Bali and he still travels often now, though he is probably a little more cautious.

So although I don’t always agree with his opinions regarding politics or football I am eternally grateful to Mike for opening my eyes to a world full of opportunities and excitement…it is what you make of it and regrets are pointless.

This post has turned into something I wasn’t expecting and it seems frivolous to talk about clothes now!  But I have a photo and I’m going to use it!  After saying summer is here to stay I jinxed the weather and it is flipping freezing here today.  Time for a jumper again in fact so I reached for my Boden Must have jumper in radish over my Boden Breton, along with my faithful Hudson Collin jeans and Tory Burch Eddie flats in Tory navy.  I love this radish color more than when I first bought it.  Maybe it is the fact I have a bit of color now after the beach, but I’m definitely going to trawl the site to see what else they have in radish.

Day of rest.

After 4 days of manic workouts to try and shift the Tybee indulgences I opted for a day of rest.  It has been welcomed by my body though my mind is restless – I think I’m just plain tired.  I’m glad I did rest as it was freezing cold at the bus stop this morning then sweltering as I arrived home this afternoon – neither option tempted me out for a run.  Plus I got to rest my foot which is still bugging me after rolling it playing tennis 3 weeks ago.  I can’t have broken anything as I’ve run on it, but it’s stiff and bruised on the top near the ankle making me aware of every step.  Frustrating to say the least with less than 2 weeks to go to the Lake Lanier Zooma half.  Anyway I’ve been following RunningInMommyland‘s advice and writing the alphabet with my big toe which seems to be loosening the tightness – and of course the ice pack helps.  All due to prancing around on a tennis court for the first time in 12 years!  On the bright side I have a back pocket excuse in case I choke on the 22nd:)

I did get out for a quick 4 miles in yesterday which was fun in my new Newtons!  All around I’ve seen more and more people opting for them and raving about them…so I caved and bought some to make me run fast.  I’m glad I visited the running store as I discovered I’d been wearing shoes at least 1/2 size too small – hence the nasty blisters in the Georgia half – which I’d attributed to poor fitting socks.  That news gave me all the justification I needed to buy these beauties and on my first outing in them I’m optimistic – they felt great even with the stiff foot.

Newton Gravity

No one in this house wanted to get up this morning – first Monday back after a fabulous spring break was a tough one.  Thankfully I’d chosen my wardrobe quickly last night before jumping in bed.  It always saves me at least 10 minutes, which are crucial at 6am when I have an almost 6 year old deliberating over her attire each day.

So today I opted for my old faithful French Connection polka dot tee, my favorite AllSaints Cerulean cardigan (I SO want the grey in this too!), Hudson Collin jeans and Sam Edelman Alvin shoes in black – perhaps the most comfortable shoes I own.

Day of rest.

A quickie…

A hectic day after a dental appointment, work then cleaning in preparation for Saturday’s party…so here is a quick post with my choice of clothing for the day…Hudson Collin jeans, Tory Burch black patent Eddies, Boden white scoop neck essential tee and AllSaints Serpent jumper.  I love the cropped Serpent cropped jumper though I have to be careful that I wear it on a ‘skinny’ day as it does absolutely nothing for a muffin top!  After some debate I added my JCrew pink linen scarf – the forecast was for 70 degrees Farenheit but the nasty storms we’ve got coming this way didn’t fill me with confidence…which do you prefer?

Getting ready for Spring Break!

As Spring is growing ever nearer plans for Spring Break are afoot.  This is the first year we have ever really had to consider Spring Break as we’ve never previously been constrained by school vacations.  With this being our year of house renovations I wasn’t sure we would get away at all, but the thought of over a week at home with the children filled me with such fear that we have just booked 2 nights away!  Hooray we’re off to Tybee Island for 3 days!  We thought it safer to book just 2 nights as we’re staying in a cabin and really have no idea what to expect – if it works out well we can always stay longer next year, and if not, well we’re only paying for 2 nights and can jump in the car to head home!  I actually think we will all love it given our fun experience in a caravan last year in France – at least Tybee will be warmer, even in April!  I just can’t wait to get to a beach and feel the sand between my toes…

In preparation for the holiday season I ordered two new bikinis from Boden.  I always have a couple of cheaper Target bikinis on the go but this year I really wanted some decent, age appropriate bikinis – I’m not ready for the tankini or a full piece yet but still a little more coverage may protect my children from embarrassment over their mother for a little while longer, at least by the pool.  Anyway I have to say both the Retro bikini and Ruffle bikini are DIVINE.  They arrived in a fabulous little bag too for storage – Boden always go the extra mile and long may it continue.  Oddly enough I photographed the bikinis without me in them:)

New bikinis

I went with a US size 8 top and size 6 bottoms.  I definitely think the bottoms are on the generous size especially if you are not used to a lot of coverage.  My previous bikinis have all been little string things so the Boden ones do feel a bit bigger and I’m glad I sized down.  My only irritation with the Retro bikini top is that I wish the tie had a stitch in it so it doesn’t come undone – I think it might drive my OCD mad.  The Ruffle bikini is perfect – it is a great sporty fit, good coverage for my C cups that have breastfed two children:)  I love the Ruffle one so much I have just ordered it in the Bluebell Bud and Apple Stripe colorways too while the ‘buy 3 get the 4th for a $1’ offer is still available.  I’m planning a LOT of time by the pool this year in lieu of Biquet Plage.

Trying the bikinis on did again reveal my soft, round tummy to me.  I’ve run 20 miles in the past 4 days and I’ve eaten a million calories.  So the plan is to keep up with the exercise and ditch the calories.  In order to rest my weary legs I swam 30 lengths this morning.  It was so much fun, the pool was so quiet, and it was great to sit in the sauna for 15mins afterward.  I’ll be lucky if I can move tomorrow after using all those upper body muscles that rarely get worked out at all.

Today I fancied wearing some Fryes so I planned my outfit starting with the boots first.  I’m wearing my Sabrina Fryes in clay, Hudson Collin jeans, Boden essential scoop neck tee, and my Boden Fairisle cardigan (no longer in stock).  The cardigan is one of my favorites – it’s very snug and cropped and always feels very neat when I wear it.

Oh and I changed my nail polish – I’m wearing Opi ‘We’ll always have Paris’ in suede finish which is nice and matte.

Today I was mostly wearing…

I headed to the gym this morning the first time for a while – it was lovely and quiet at 7.30am and I managed to kill myself on the treadmill for 30mins.  As much as I love running outdoors I can’t abide the treadmill but with impending rain here today I thought it was a safer bet.  To keep me in the ‘zone’ I returned to my youth and cranked up the volume of some club classics including the The Collaboration “Do It Properly”.  Danny Rampling is a bargain on iTunes!

Knowing I was heading out for lunch with a friend I wanted to wear something comfortable and fun so I opted for my new Boden Mariner jumper, Hudson Collin jeans, Boden biker jacket from SS 2011, and my Tory Burch red Revas for a pop of color.  It was fun drying my hair today – it must have taken only a minute – I love it!

Be good to your customers.

I was thrilled to head home with a new pair of jeans yesterday!  I had bought a pair of Hudson Collins last April and while wearing them over Christmas I bent down and the knee completely split!  After 8 months of infrequent wear I certainly didn’t expect that for an almost $200 pair of jeans.  So being the Social Media addict that I am I left a note on their Facebook page and was directed to email their customer services.  After returning the damaged pair they sent me a completely brand new pair of jeans – isn’t that brilliant?!  It just goes to show it is always worth asking and not just accepting.  I have found more and more brands and companies are responding to customer issues via social media before any bad news travels virally.  As great as social media can be for a brand it can also kill it in an instant if you are not seen to respond to a customer appropriately.  This article clearly demonstrates the damage that can be done:)  Also doing the rounds yesterday on Facebook was this fab story regarding Sainsbury‘s response to a young customer.  As a side note, if you are also a Hudson fan, I just received and email today about their 30% off end of season sale.

The meeting with our contractor went well – first check signed and handed over – yikes!  Now the design for our new master bathroom begins.  I think I might start an ‘inspiration board’ and take a look at Pinterest for some ideas…I can’t wait to see the final design that will include my lovely soaking tub.  I’ve also subscribed to all the home magazines like HGTV and Dwell – I can see this becoming another thing to obsess about.  In addition to the bathroom all our hardwoods are being refinished and stained, and the floors in the couple of rooms that are still carpeted are being replaced with hardwoods – I can’t even bear to think about the mess and dust that this project will create – the finished product should be worth it though!

My choice of clothes today was influenced by a) the forecast of rain all day and b) a play date for the kids today – we’ve got 3 boys coming round so no doubt I will be scrambling around on the floor a lot picking things up and looking for objects.  The Clifton tunic was another clearance purchase from Boden – I actually ordered all three colors but far preferred the navy so returned the heather and pine.  Unfortunately it is now sold out so no link.  I like the fact it is a layering piece and it looks great over a patterned or plain tank.  The leggings are also Boden – the best quality leggings I have ever bought, and inside my Frye Harness boots I actually also have on my Boden stripy socks.  The necklace is an old J Crew Outlet one that I have wrapped twice around my neck.  I selected my little Tiffany Elsa Peretti diamond earrings as I don’t like wearing bigger earrings with a necklace.  It’s interesting how writing this blog has challenged me to look at my decision making criteria!  The second image shows me in the JohnnieB leather biker jacket that was one of the first items I bought when the AW 2011 season went live.

So I’m now off to buy treats and paints etc…for the kids to enjoy this rainy afternoon – wish me luck for the play date:)
