Our wedding anniversary!

Last week was quite an emotionally charged week. Sometimes I go through a roller coaster of emotions – normally initiated by a massive bout of homesickness. I miss lots about England from basic cultural stuff like food, television and the humor – to more intense things like friends and family. Sometimes that sense of longing for the UK is far deeper than at other times. I’m more susceptible to it at this time of year when the kids are back at school, summer and vacations are over and the days are getting shorter. Having said all that, if I was ever given the option to return to England I doubt I would. After 15 years here there are as many things I would miss about the US as I now miss about the UK! Basically I want my cake and eat it – if I could hit a button to swiftly move from one location to the other at will I’d be thrilled!

Fortunately the week ended on a massive high note – my husband and I celebrated 17 years of marriage on Saturday and I was treated to a slap up 5 course meal and some fabulous gifts. I was spoiled indeed! I dug out some wedding photos to share with the children – we had quite a giggle! Forgive the quality as I took photos of hard copies using my phone!

Boden are back on my Fall Winter wish list!

Those of you who have followed me from the start will remember that I used to be OBSESSED with Boden. In fact one of the reasons I started blogging was because I enjoyed sharing my new Boden purchases on their social media forum (no longer operating). The problem is I was, and still am, developing my personal style and I think I just became weary of my Boden tunics, knitwear and jackets. I never really subscribed to their ‘fun prints’, but their quality and customer service could not and cannot ever be faulted. Of course I also loved wearing a quintessential British brand to remind me of home. Being here in the US also means that Boden can be worn loud and proud without incurring any of the potentially negative brand associations that it has in the UK – mumsy, middle class and frumpy.

I haven’t even visited the site recently but a 20% off code – 2A9Z in the US – was enough to lure me in. I did order the beautiful Alice shoes back in June but unfortunately they were way too narrow. At their reduced price of just $89 in the clearance I am tempted to try them again half a size up.

This Breton is currently in my basket. I absolutely LOVE the pine color and the broader stripes.

I’ve recently sold many of my winter coats. Each year I find they just don’t get worn. I LOVE a great coat, but here in Atlanta, even when it is cold, I have little need for a heavy winter coat as this city is all about the car – no walking outside wrapped up in the cold is required. This beautiful Ella jacket will be sufficient – again it is currently 20% off.

Of course I want the Alexa sweater to wear with it as modeled above.

Poor game from Nike

My Nike order arrived. Out of the order placed – Internationalists, Montreals and AirMax – the only that I loved and that are staying are the Air Max. I just found the others too retro and the colors irl were less than appealing. Now for a little bit of a soap box rant – retailers if you allow customers to pay via PayPal online then please provide the ability to refund in store! If Zara and TopShop can do it, as a ‘global tier retailer’ Nike should be able to too, instead of only offering a store credit. To receive your cash back you have to return via mail. I was less than happy to be told this in the Nike store this morning. You may have heard my displeasure if you were in Atlanta.

Being pissed off by any aspect of customer service can put me off a brand for life. I may not be purchasing the swoosh again, but I am totally in love with my red Air Max essentials.

Given that I have returned some Nikes (by mail!), and that I received a 15% off birthday code from Adidas, I have ordered these Adidas Top Tens. They are $115 on Net-a-porter.com but just $90 on Adidas.com – and if you sign up for their email they will send you a 15% discount code. Well worth it. If NAP are selling them then they are obviously ‘the’ sneaker to wear this Fall/Winter!

I am so, so tired today, but I’m struggling through! The struggle is eased by the fun memories of my birthday! My family yet again went above and beyond to make it a special day. Everywhere I looked there were little stickers with my face on them, and my husband made a card with a blog photo from every month of last year!

We dined out last night at an amazing new steak house in Atlanta – Marcel – just exquisite – certainly an indulgent treat! For the occasion I wore the AllSaints Noir dress which I purchased in the sales. It was perfect – no waist to hinder over consumption! It has a cool zipper neck line which I love – it gives a little edginess to a LBD.

As I was searching for the sandals online (now on sale at just £19!) I came across this flat version at M&S – be quick – you know they are bound to sell out! There is also a closed toe heeled version here.

The birthday weekend

Yup the birthday isn’t till tomorrow but that hasn’t stopped me from celebrating all weekend! After lunch with my husband on Thursday, I ended up with lunch out again on Friday. It was lovely – I headed to my favorite place and dined alone, contemplating the next year, and reviewing my early 40s! I’d done a little shopping in the morning and treated myself to a couple of new lipsticks and a Dior nail polish in Wonderland (the staying power of which is amazing!). It was a lovely indulgent day.

Saturday was spent relaxing by the pool so I didn’t really get dressed. I had a lovely day reading and catching up on my enormous pile of magazines that has accumulated over my vacation.

Today we are off out to brunch – I’m feeling quite virtuous after an intensive spin class. Eggs Benedict may be required to raise my energy levels as I may have committed to getting a couple of guinea pigs for the kids! The cage has been delivered so I may now be held to purchasing two piggies later today! We’re not sure whether we’re going to end up with Patsy and Edina, or Freddie (Mercury) and Brian (May)!

On Friday I took the kids to meet my piercing guru, Richard, at PiercingExp.com. My sparkly septum ring had finally arrived and I LOVE it. It’s a Gem Oaktier in solid rose gold with genuine white sapphires.

On a final, sad note – an Atlanta mom of two small girls died on Sunday after a mystery illness took hold. Nothing can take away the pain for her girls, but the community here is trying to get tickets for the girls to see Taylor Swift when she tours here. Golden Goose Sneakers

I do love my Golden Goose sneakers. Yes they are expensive full price – crazy expensive. BUT if you hold out for sales there are some great bargains to be had and you can get your hands on a pair for the same price as two pairs of Stan Smiths. Worth every penny in my opinion. I was super lucky with my sale purchases this year and ended up with these from ShoeScribe (owned by Yoox).

There are still several styles available in their sale – and I am obsessing over this turquoise iridescent pair. I’m hoping they sell out before I am sucked in.

They are the coolest, most comfortable sneakers I own.

Yay!! Patience and perseverance have paid off and I now have a bob – albeit and short one! Now it is shaped it will be much easier to continue to grow it to my jawline. Sunshine and Biotin really seem to help with growth. Thanks O’Neil at Van Michael Salon – a great cut as always!

Yes tomorrow we will be leaving Northern Cyprus to begin our mammoth journey back to Atlanta, via Istanbul and Paris. It’s been an amazing four weeks but even though I am sad it is over there are many things I am looking forward to when I get home –

1. Seeing my dogs!

2. Having ALL my closet to wear

3. Having ALL my beauty products and makeup to play around with

4. Blowdrying my hair without sweating balls

5. Not sweating balls

6. Whole Foods shopping

7. The gym – yes really!

8. Netflix…

9. Catching up on all my missed Real Housewives episodes

10. My own coffee machine!

11. Opening all my sales goodies (Shhhhhh….)

On Monday we headed back to Salamis to have one last play among the ruins followed by a day on the beach.

These beach jumpsuits from ASOS are perfect for leaving the beach for the restaurant or running around ancient Greek cities!

Last night we went out for doners again – I might go veggie for a bit once I get home!

Authentic Greek (Cypriot) Sandals

Yesterday we headed back to Nicosia. This time we had our passports and crossed the border to the Greek side. Immediately it was obvious that we were somewhere different. I was suddenly confronted with lots of recognizable brands – MacDonalds, Starbucks, TopShop – there’s even a Marks and Spencer! On the Turkish side there are no European brands at all – though several stores emulate them, for example Tempo’s stores and supermarket bags are very similar to Tesco’s!

We wandered around the streets and had coffee and ice creams and I was really aware of not using the Turkish words for ‘thank you’ etc…

The highlight of the trip (sad I know) was stumbling on a sandal store. The sandals are made here in Nicosia and they are remarkably similar, if not identical to another sandal brand that I love wearing! The key difference is that these sandals in Nicosia were just 40 Euros! I ended up leaving with 2 pairs but I could have bought more – and may go back next week just to check. They are all leather with leather soles. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am with them – never again will I spend over $200 on sandals. My sandals are identical to another brand’s sandal!

Feet are badly in need of a pedi after almost 4 weeks of dust and heat! Just focus on the sandals!

I even got shoe bags to take them home in – a nice touch.

Astir Sandals have two Etsy stores – SandalsAstir and Sparta Sandals – and they will ship. Take a look – you will see many styles that you probably recognize. I found them true to size and I have a Eur 39 in mine. They only show photos in one particular color, but if you scroll through the photos you can see all the available colors that you can request and buy them in.

Not many people can say they are traveling to a different country for sandals hey? 😉
