Shop my closet!

Okay so I know I am getting a new walk in closet soon but in transferring and consolidating my clothes between various closets it has become apparent that I have too many clothes.  This sounds like a confessional but yes I have many beautiful items that have not seen the light of day for sometime – some hardly worn, some not worn at all.  Terrible hey?  Well maybe not because you may benefit.

I have an eBay store here at poppys_style where I am selling anything from designer jeans to Boden tunics (all items have been personally bought by me).  Everything is in great/mint condition – I will not sell anything that is less than great condition.  All shipping is included and will be sent priority USPS via eBay so that you can track your package and make sure it is on its way to you.

Brands I sell include Boden, J.Crew and Diesel.  Sizes are mainly US 4-8 depending on brand!

If there is anything you have seen me wear that you are desperate to get your hands on then drop me a note to Joanna@poppys-style.com – you never know it may be on my ‘not ready to let it go yet, but soon’ list!

Enjoy! xx

Fabulous Louella!

One of the real joys of writing this blog is how many new friends and connections I have made through it.  I love hearing from people regardless as to whether they have something good or bad to say.  I especially love hearing from people who want to share their style or inspiration too!  The fabulous Louella contacted me after my post the other day regarding the Boden cyclamen skinny jeans – it’s quite amazing how many people decided to take the plunge and try them even if they didn’t work out.  Louella is a working mum of two boys in the South of England, and as you can see the jeans obviously worked a treat for Louella as she looks amazing in them!  Louella says she normally stays clear of Boden, but she is a perfect example of how fun it can be to try a new brand, even if you, like Louella, are put off by paying to return items in the sale.  I will mention, as I did to Louella, that if you ordered during the season with an offer for free shipping and returns and received a free return label – keep it!  I keep all mine to use in the sale so I don’t have to worry about paying for return postage – and it’s worked so far.  As for Louella I’m thrilled she ordered them and I think the color of the jeans looks amazing with her beautiful olive skin.  Louella is a runner too so can carry those skinnies off perfectly!  Personally I love the shoes too!

I paired mine with the Zara butterfly top and Louella managed to get hold of the Zara dragonfly top – again it looks gorgeous on her and I really hope the weather improves back in Blighty so she actually gets to wear it with the black shorts she has modeled here – look at those toned legs!:

Thank you so much for sharing these photos with us all Louella – great inspiration – and I hope you had the best birthday today!

If you would like to share any photos with me or be featured on the blog please send an email to joanna@poppys-style.com – I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

One parting word today – I want to thank Beth from Style Guile for mentioning me in her blogger round up on BritMums today – it’s an honour to be included and I am glad my blogging ‘voice’ conveys my ‘zest for life’:)

A little worse for wear.

That’ll be me not Kenny or Glenn, who for 2 guys in their 70s put on an amazing show last night.  They sang all their classics and even though Glenn needed 3 teleprompters he rallied the crowd with jokes regarding memory loss.  Poor guy – growing old can be cruel sometimes – physically he looks amazing and his tenor voice still sounds crystal clear.  As he sang his last song, with 3 of his children behind him in the band, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house – I was sobbing!  Kenny was pretty awesome too, though I did feel a bit short changed by ‘The Gambler’ which personally I think should have been his encore instead of ‘Islands in the Stream’ – I never realized so many of his hits were ballads – MM was not impressed…AC/DC is much more up his alley!  The AJC have written a great review here.  I danced my pants off and enjoyed a bottle of cava along with our picnic so yes a little worse for wear today – I shall be spending it holding the sofa down watching the Tour de France.  Incidentally the Tour is going from Limoux to Foix today where, in my experience, you can get the best omelet and frites followed by the most expensive MacDonalds in the World!

You can just make out Glenn here in the white shirt:

The best omelet and frites back in Limoux in 2010!

Hugh liked his nuggets too:)

For the show I went a little bit country and wore my Boden Boho tunic which I love – so comfy and yet quite dressy – perfect for a summer evening out.  It’s currently in the sale at $82.80 – still pricey but worth it in my eyes for a great summer dress.  I should also mention the amazing customer service I had from Boden this week.  They further reduced the price of several items – some of which I had bought at the start of the sale – after one quick email to them they credited my Boden account with the price difference of the items and checked my other orders for me to see if any other items had been reduced – so I now have $95 ‘extra’ sitting waiting to be spent when the new AW collection goes live!  Boden truly are fabulous.

I wore it with my new Sam Edelman Louie boots in rose taupe – they are just gorgeous – such an unusual color, especially for a boot and the leather is exquisitely soft.

Earlier in the day we headed out to the park with the children and Tennyson.  The weather is a bit overcast here with lots of storms rumbling through so it wasn’t really pool weather.  I wore my Express Zelda white crops which I love and have great stretch, my white Converse – I always forget how fun and comfortable these are to wear, and a steal from the Zara sale – a $10 oversize t-shirt in a lovely flamingo pink – really soft and drapey.  Since I got the Boden Bloom oil cloth beach bag in the sale for the pool I’m now using my Union Jack Beachcomber bag for day use – it’s so fun but unfortunately sold out.

Boden sale haul!

Oh goodness words cannot describe how happy I am with my sale haul.  Let’s take this step by step…

Chic leather biker jacket

This jacket is just lovely as I had hoped – I’ve had my eye on it all season.  The leather is so soft and the grey is a perfect neutral that goes with anything and everything from jeans to dresses to shorts – love it and worth every penny in the sale.  I ordered my usual US 6 and it fits great across the back and shoulders and in the arms – a little snug around my ample midriff but I’m unlikely to ever wear it fastened.

Skinny jeans

I ordered these as a ‘oh let’s just try them’ as I have never ordered Boden jeans before, and tend to stick with my faithful Gap and Hudson brands, but I loved the cyclamen and quail egg colors so much that I needed to see them.  I am so glad I did.  Again I ordered in my regular US 6 and they are a higher waist than my Hudsons but really comfy – they are a tad snug when first pulled on but I’ve been wearing them for an hour or so now and they are just perfect.  Thrilled with them.

Sorry for the grainy photos – lighting isn’t great!

Florence tunic

I ordered both the fennel and the navy for a pop of color and something classic.  They are a little thinner and a little shorter than last years chic linen tunic but I love them all the same.  With nude shapewear underneath I can wear them as dresses though they are sheer – I’ll keep my legs together.  I just love how summery they feel – they’d be great with leggings too if you are in cooler climates!  No photos yet but will sort that out for you:)

Bloom Beach bag

Just fabulous – HUGE and colorful – with a gorgeous turquoise lining – I love it.  Will stay dry by the pool and look fantastic – wish I’d bought this sooner but I can’t wait to take it to Kyrenia next year!

Jersey striped scarf

I have to say this is the hit of the haul – I hadn’t even considered it until Avril at School Gate Style put it on her wish list – but it is my most favorite item of the lot.  It’s large, drapey, soft and a fabulous grey with a trim of color.  It can be worn all year and will be perfect for transatlantic flights back home – I just love it and want all the other colors too!  Get it while you can for $24 it is fabulous.

So today I am wearing my gorgeous cyclamen jeans and they feel great – perfect for a rainy summer day in Atlanta.  I’ve paired them with my Zara butterfly top and I know butterflies and birds are omnipresent right now but I love this top and it was all of $36!  The navy one with collar is in the sale right now online for $19.99.  I think my turquoise Tory Burch Emmy sandals look fun with the jeans but maybe it’s too much color?  All topped off with my cream J.Crew light weight cashmere cardigan – it’s chilly in my air conditioned office!

Oh and I forgot to mention the gorgeous little touch from Boden – they slipped in a little notebook in one of my parcels – room to take notes plus some splendid quirky English tips like interpreting English English for Americans:)  One of my favorite Facebook pages is http://www.facebook.com/quitepeckish who serve up quaint little English tidbits daily – it’s fun.

What have been your favorite Boden sale purchases?

Enhanced by Zemanta

There’ll be time enough for countin’ when the dealin’s done.

Oh yeah baby – tickets are bought for what should be a tremendous night out on Saturday – Glen Campbell and Kenny Rogers together at Chastain Amphitheater!  To say I am excited is an understatement.  MM and I have seen a few acts over the years at Chastain most notable were The Pet Shop Boys and Willie Nelson – both were fantastic nights.  Chastain is a a great open air venue and everyone takes picnics and wine – some very well organized folks even take along cushions, folding tables and and wine coolers – my wine never lasts long enough to need one.  All morning I have been reacquainting myself with ‘Galveston’, ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ and ‘The Gambler’ – I am giddy with excitement!  Oh and Loretta Lynn is playing there on the 24th August – if I can guarantee she’ll play from her Van Lear Rose album I’ll be buying tickets again – imagine if Jack White made a guest appearance!!

I worked out again this morning at the Y so I’m feeling quite happy with myself!  I even seem to have got the gym bag packing down to a fine art – I used to really dislike getting ready at the gym before heading to work as I always found I’d forgotten something.  Well I seem to have cracked the code but I’m still walking out of the house with a work bag, gym bag and pool bag every day – it requires a lot of careful planning:)

I was inspired to wear an ‘old’ Boden tunic today after seeing Beth wear hers the other day.  This tunic is one of the first women’s wear items that I bought from Boden, and marks the time I became interested in clothes again after losing all my weight.  I love it and have it in the pinky color too.  I wore this taupe one when I was sworn in as a US citizen so it always brings back great memories when I wear it.  I’ve paired it with another couple of Boden classics – my pink and orange espadrilles which were a sale bargain and I love them for adding a pop of color to a ‘beige’ outfit, along with my taupe long line cardigan – another sale bargain from summer 2011.

I brought too much.

Yes not surprisingly I brought too much stuff with us.  The lifestyle, the walking, and the weather over here really don’t require the array of outfits that I packed.  The need for 2 pairs of ballet flats completely obviated by consistently soggy ground and puddles.  Remind me next year folks to just bring jeans, a couple of t-shirts and a couple of sweaters – it’s all I’ve really worn.  Not that I’m complaining but it would have been nice to be able to wear a jacket other than my Patagonia Nano in June!  Well in fact I did yesterday and made a HUGE error in judgement but more on that in a moment!

On Monday we ventured off to Skipton.  Now don’t ask me why my family has always had an affinity with West Yorkshire but ever since I can remember we have been having family day trips to the lovely town of Skipton.  It’s just far enough to feel like a ‘proper day out’ and yet not too far where it feels you’re not home till dark – though that would be tough here right now – completely WEIRD that the sun is not setting till at least 10pm and rising at a ridiculously early hour.  My brother and his family joined us and we set off in convoy.

Now Skipton is a huge draw for me due to the fabulous fish and chips that it has to offer, so after a walk around the market we headed to Bizzie Lizzie’s for lunch.  Thankfully both children seem to have embraced this British institution too, though sadly remain skeptical about mushy peas.

Hugh overjoyed at the prospect of fish and chips.  Me in my Boden must have jumper in quail egg and Breton long sleeved top.  Boden’s sale will start soon but they have 40% off select styles now – take advantage if you have your eye on something it may not be there in the sale!

On then to Bolton Abbey.  This ruin has to be set in some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain.  It is idyllic and you can walk along the river through wild garlic, blue bells and foxgloves – just gorgeous – even with 2 very tired children.  I never thought I’d be the Mum urging them on and telling them the car park is ‘just around the corner’ around every corner:)

Aggressive ducks who enjoyed Hugh’s peanut butter sandwiches!

The rock climbing got a little too adventurous for me!

Poser.

At the Strid with Grandad.

Bolton Abbey is also very dear to my heart as when MM and I were trying to select a venue for our non-religious but still white wedding we landed on the Devonshire Arms – the perfect place – a bit posh but fairly unpretentious (if you don’t count the helicopter pad) – so I got to show the children yet again where Mum and Dad got married, and a few years later my sister and her husband.

Yesterday we ventured off out again, this time Chester Zoo.  Chester Zoo has changed dramatically since I was little – it’s a fabulous zoo, well looked after, clean, and large with tonnes of great animals to see.  The weather was glorious as we packed the car up in Bury – in fact I nearly put my shorts on and I got to wear my Wayfarers for the first time here!

Waiting to go – I’m in my Gap black skinnies, AllSaints Bonny Cuban boots, H&M linen long sleeved top and my Ray-Ban Wayfarers.

All Mini Bodened up:)

Now Chester Zoo isn’t that far away from Bury – we’re still in the North West of England anyway, but boy those skies darkened as we got closer to our destination.  It turned out to be that rain, very specific to the North West, that I like to call a fine, consistent, wet rain, wet as in drenched.  This is where my error in clothing was spectacular – my poor Boden leather jacket:(  The rest of my very sensible family were all prepared in their Gore-Tex waterproof jackets…not me – I didn’t get the memo.  Thankfully there seemed to be a coach load of Scousers wearing far more inappropriate attire than me – they were more fun to watch than the animals:)

I asked them to smile.

Wet, wet, wet.

The dinosaur exhibit – Hugh was far more interested in the inanimate, extinct animals.

The spitting dinosaur – couldn’t tell really due to the rain.

Awww – new baby tigers:)

Today we’re taking it easy.  My sister and her boys are coming over, I’m going for a run, and then I’m off out with an old school friend tonight.  I can’t wait to catch up – I saw her briefly last year, but really it’s been almost 20 years since and 7 children (she has 5!) since we had a night out together.  I bet neither one of us has changed too much.

Reading material.

I pity the poor folk who have less IT literacy than I do and try to borrow eBooks or audio books from Fulton library system!  I have been trying to get a few alternatives to listen to and read on the plane on Monday but blimey you need a flippin’ IT degree to figure out the library’s system – I used to work in IT and have still been struggling!  There appears to be a cluster of issues making it nigh on impossible to borrow a book.  A combination of few available books, several file formats, several apps needing to be downloaded, and zero compatibility with my Macbook – resulting in one frustrated borrower.  It’s easier and cheaper time wise just to buy a couple of books on iTunes or go back to the good old paperback.  MM thinks I’m fooling myself anyway – thinking that I will have time to read with a 4 year old and a 6 year old in a confined space for 9 hours is just asking for trouble:)  Anyway the third book in the Larsson trilogy will be joining me on the plane and I will get to read it – though I’ll be sad when I’ve finished it – I’ve loved these books so much.  Next on my list is the new Robert Harris book – The Fear Index.

I’m off to the pool with Poppy this afternoon again to avoid the workmen at home.  I had a sneak peek in the room yesterday and my oh my – it’s all gone!  The old bathroom is completely demolished and the old closet wall is gone!  So we’re almost at the ‘fun’ bit – that is bringing in the new bathroom!  It does look a bit creepy in there now – as MM pointed out – they get their plastic sheeting from the same supplier as Dexter Morgan🙂

I opted for a bit of summer color today with my Boden fab jersey tunic in prune (I have the moss here too).  This really has been the surprise of the season – it is so lovely in real life – the colors really pop.  Luckily I also have the perfect J.Crew cashmere cardigan to coordinate with the orange in it – and my nectarine Tory Burch Revas work perfectly! Apologies for the dark photo again and all the stuff behind me – my packing is in full swing!

Dislocation.

Uuuurgh – sorry for the lack of weekend posts.  I have had an exhausting, stressful time running up and down stairs moving what appears to be shed loads of clothes, shoes (some I’d forgotten about – the shame) and cosmetics to the basement suite where MM and I will be residing until the end of the renovations.  In a way it’s quite nice to have the opportunity for a good clear out.  We really haven’t done it since we moved into the house 4 years ago – then we just put stuff in what seemed logical places and now, having lived in the house for a while, I know there is a better way to organize things.  In fact it will be amazing to have a large walk in closet where all my lovely clothes can be hung, and shoes can be stacked for easy access.  You wouldn’t believe the amount of crap that my bathroom vanity had hidden in it.  I must have really suffered with hemorrhoids after the birth of my son – I had about 20 different brands of cream in there!!  Ouch!

Poppy and I took a break from the turmoil yesterday and headed to the salon for her hair cut.  Honestly you would think she is 6 going on 16.  Mom wasn’t allowed to sit with her – but I assure you as I sat in the waiting area I could hear her chit chatting away ‘well ac-tual-leee I can do this’, ‘no reeeeally she said so’, ‘I SO like that’…etc.etc.  Where did my little girl go?  She’s been possessed by a 16 year old mall rat!

The workmen arrived this morning…an hour late…not a good start…but at least they showed up to start the demo.  I now have to stay clear of the house all day till 4pm so I don’t get roped into making cups of tea all afternoon:)  I did manage to get MM to move the only long mirror in the house down into the guest room where we are sleeping for the next 8 weeks – but the photo is pretty dreadful today – I need to move the mirror somewhere where it doesn’t look like I have a light affixed to my head!

The outfit isn’t too inspiring today mainly as I was struggling for ideas after carrying all the clothes downstairs.  Packing for England this week is going to be a nightmare – I already can’t find half my underwear!  I’m wearing my Hudson jeans – all of you in England will be happy to hear it’s throwing it down here too and we have grey skies today.  Paired with the jeans is the Boden Pretty top from last summer – a lovely, ‘pretty’, easy to wear top that is much more girly than my usual attire.  On my feet I have my Tory Burch flannel Revas which are really comfy.  You’ll notice I’m also desperate for a haircut – 6 weeks between cuts really is too long for me.

Yummy Thai.

It’s a quiet day in the office today so my fabulous Husband has just offered to take me for lunch – what a lovely surprise – so we’re off for Thai.  Not really on the diet plan but hey I’ll go off to the gym later to compensate:)

I watched the first half of the Jubilee concert last night and absolutely loved it – I am amazed how many people were out on The Mall!  It made me feel tremendously homesick – I’ve strolled down there countless times to then walk through St. James’s Park back to Westminster – one of my favorite ‘most London’ walks, where I felt more like a tourist rather than a resident.  I think I need to plan a girls trip back to London again for some sight seeing and fun:)

Anyway before I plan for more trips I need to prepare to head for the UK on the 18th of this month!  I feel quite overwhelmed tackling the packing for 3 of us for the unpredictable North West weather – layering may be the key.  I also have the daunting task of whittling down my shoes from the ‘really want to take’ 6 pairs to the ‘really need to take’ 3 pairs.  I’m wondering whether the hot spell a couple of weeks ago is it for the UK?  There’s usually only one per year – so do I gamble and not take shorts or a sundress?  If it does get hot I can always pop into Sainsbury’s for some great deals – I got a gorgeous blue sundress from there 2 years ago when I was caught out by rising temperatures.  To add to the complexity I now have a 6 year old asking me if she can do all her own packing without any help…hmmm maybe not as the first thing she put in the pile was her Girl’s World head!

My ensemble today demonstrates how brilliantly previous seasons from Boden complement current seasons.  The cardigan is the long line cardigan in pewter from summer 2011 that I got in the sale – I love this color and it’s an almost identical style to this season’s effortless cardigan.  This pewter coordinates perfectly with the border print tunic in pewter from this season, and even better my Tory Burch Eddies in camilla pink pick out the pink in the tunic brilliantly.  I feel wonderful in this today and can’t believe I nearly passed up on this tunic thinking it was too similar to last year’s Terazzo.  The tunic by the way is my usual US 6 – I know some have said size up but as I have no hips I didn’t need to.

Red, white and blue.

It’s rubbish weather here in Atlanta today – dark and dreary, such a shame after a fabulous weekend, but easier to bear now I’m back in the office.  We had a fabulous time at Virginia Highlands Summerfest – the weather was perfect for mooching and watching some great live music.  I was in awe at a group of 14-16 year olds rocking out on stage – called ‘My Homework Ate My Dog‘ – they were brilliant – and it got me thinking about how to introduce music lessons to my two.  I think music is so important and there is evidence that reading music can also help with numeracy.  I was reading basic music at elementary school and playing the recorder, and then I graduated to the flute which was challenging once orthodontics started!  I really think understanding rhythm and reading music can boost your appreciation of music and we always have some sort of music playing in the house – anything from Led Zeppelin to Robyn to Mahler.  So maybe I should start them with piano lessons?

Brightening up the day today and sticking with the patriotic theme I’m wearing my Boden long sleeved Breton, Boden Effortless cardigan in radish, white Express Zelda crops and Tory Burch Eddie flats in Tory Navy.

Oh and one final very important note the Boden Autumn preview is out for women!!! In my opinion this is THE BEST season of clothes I have seen from them.  Very ‘on trend’ with a retro, younger vibe – I’ve already placed two orders!!!  My most favorite items are the Scoop Neck Tunic, Loulou dress, Cable knit dress (I’ve only ever previously bought 1 Boden dress!) and Skye jumper.  Enjoy browsing and until June 25th there is a 20% discount.
