Transitional dressing.

Oh my goodness what a lot of snow you’ve all had in parts of the UK! In March too!?  I don’t think I’d even have the proper attire for snow like that!  It’s a great time to do a bit of online browsing/shopping if you’re stuck indoors:)

Here it’s definitely brightening up – though torrential rain yesterday caused trees to fall and bring power lines down resulting in a fire in the neighborhood – all a bit scary really!  All were fine and I noticed the charred trees today – it seems to be a regular occurrence when it rains here.

So some layers were required today as the temperature climbs again – I love the drape of this jacket from River Island – I’m so happy it made its way into my luggage:)

Comfy sneakers.

Yes I know sneakers are everywhere right now and every blogger, magazine and newspaper, it seems, has featured them – so it’s my turn with a pick of some of my favorites.  I have been a sneaker/trainer advocate for some time and always used to make a point of buying them cheap from the US, when we first started traveling here.  Friends laughed at me when I described my various pairs of trainers that were either for ‘fashion’ or ‘fitness’ – well you don’t want to wear smelly trainers that you worked out in down at the pub!

My favorites were, and probably always will be, the Nike Air Max ’95s.  I had a pair of grey with green and a pair of blue with orange, which I adored and wore both till they fell apart – unusual for me!

I am also a big lover of hi tops and again Nike tends to be my go to brand.  I love these Dunk wedge sneakers that they have designed.  As you see, like my trousers, I like my sneakers loud!

Going old school – I love these Vans – perfect with skinnies or boyfriend jeans with a simple sweatshirt for a great tomboy look.

These new Adidas ones have caught my eye too.  I love Adidas and have a pair of navy Gazelles.  I had a pair of green ones that I hunted high and low for back in the early 90’s when Ms. Moss made them a must have item.  These hi-tops are a grey marl jersey fabric – they look super comfy and I can’t resist grey marl ever – even on sneakers.

Finally, of course, we can spend a little more should we so wish.  Waiting in my closet to be worn are a pair of Marant Bobby sneakers.  As soon as the rain disappears they will be on my feet – I adore them and they are the perfect color for summer with shorts.

After Kat reminded me about the Ash Virgins, I took a peek at their new Spring sneakers and I am currently yearning for a pair of Ash Virgin star cutouts in silver – they’d be awesome with boyfriend jeans and my Zara red leather jacket:)

Coincidentally my past few outfits have revolved around sneakers.  On Saturday night we went out to our lovely neighbors for little get together.  It was a fabulous night, late and indulgent and the kids had a blast too.  I wore my new Matalan maxi skirt, old Gap striped t-shirt, Boden Union Jack scarf (old), Gap denim jacket (old) and white Converse.

Today I went for comfort, and rain is expected so the Bobby sneakers are still in their box!  I bought these Nike sneakers over a year ago and love the girly pink trim on them:)

So have you bought into the sneaker trend?  Which are your must haves?

Spring?

Yay the sun is out!  After a few snow sprinkles yesterday I was worried winter may be here for a few more weeks.  It’s funny as a remember leaving hospital 5 years ago with Hugh and it was snowing then too!

I’m loving my new Marks and Spencer cardigan – it’s perfect with the AllSaints Dita dress – even if I did just bloody well spill beetroot juice on it – gah!  Fortunately managed to get it out with some lightning fast action!  So much for staying healthy – beetroot juice – good for body – crap for clothes.

A girls trip to the Trafford Centre.

So apart from my weekend in London – the other highlight of my trip that I had been looking forward to for some time, took place yesterday.  My sister took the day off work and left her 2 boys at daycare so we head to the Trafford Centre for a girls day out with Mum.  We try to do it every time I’m back but often there are children involved – who it has to be said – can somewhat hamper the shopping experience!

We arrived as the stores were opening and had a blast.  I relished every moment of it.  There is something really special about spending time with your family that you take for granted when they are around all the time.  Mine are not – so it was lovely watching Mum and Louise have fun and get the same thrill out of shopping as I do.

We started at M&S where Louise and I both got a couple of scarves – Mum had some 20% off vouchers so it was hard to say no:)  Plus Mum got a couple of bags that she paid all of 10GBP for what with her 20% off and various vouchers she had collected!

My scarf – the Indigo Flamingo print (I also got a fabulous bicycle print scarf which isn’t on the website):

Flamingoes

Louise’s scarf is a gorgeous silk Autograph scarf:

Lou blue

Looking at these simple images of scarves it is evident how different Louise and I are in our style.  She gravitates towards greys, taupes and neutrals – she has very elegant, sophisticated tastes and prefers simplicity to loud eccentric prints.  See the difference?:)  I think it speaks volumes about our personalities!

I then had lots of fun in Ted Baker.  Their store is amazing.  Full of great colors and the decor is very grand and decadent.  I had been wanting to try the Jupi dress since I fell in love with it in Bloomingdale’s.  It’s a lot cheaper here with the exchange rate and sales tax so I knew I had to try it.  Ted Baker do the 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 sizing which drives me nuts as I am always at the 3/4 end.  The store only had a 4 so I tried it and even though it was fine – with my top heavy frame it felt too billowy around the hips.   I put it back knowing Selfridges have a concession that I could check later.  I did, however, know that there was also a t-shirt in the same print – far more practical and versatile.  So I tried the 3 in the top and decided to get this instead of the dress.  End of.  Totally love it.  The changing rooms are a lot prettier than my photos suggest!

IMG_3261 IMG_3260

One thing I didn’t get about Ted Baker is that they will only exchange items – not refund them – I think that is pretty rubbish these days.

So on to Zara – Mum got a fabulous quilted jacket (can’t see it on the website) and Louise picked up this gorgeous white coat.  Both Mum and Louise are really petite so look amazing in everything they put on!

Louise coat

We then headed off for lunch – there’s a huge selection at the Trafford Center.  I knew I wanted a long decadent lunch i.e. one with wine – so we chose Pizza Express.  Now I remember when they were new and lovely.  This one was fine – but PLEASE it is 2013 – can’t we figure out using laminated menus instead of grubby, greasy card?  As a customer experience ‘expert’ I realize I may be overly judgmental, but this is the first thing your customer sees in a restaurant.  Sort it out Pizza Express!  It just makes the whole restaurant feel less than clean.  Regardless, lunch was fabulous.  I love my Mum and sister:)

IMG_3262

So finally I had to look in Selfridges.  I love this store.  The whole shopping experience is immediately elevated.  Now yes I had already bought the t-shirt but just for curiosity’s sake I went to the Ted Baker concession to see if they had a 3 in the dress.  They did.  After a couple of glasses of wine it was a no brainer:)

Here’s what I wore for the day.

See you all when I’m back in Atlanta!!  England it has been a BLAST!

I’m here!

Sorry for being AWOL for a couple of days.  I spent the weekend and President’s Day enjoying time with my family before jumping on a Transatlantic flight to Manchester on Monday evening.  After a pretty painless flight I’m safely ensconced at my Mum and Dad’s being fed endless supplies of bacon butties – fabulous!  It turns out my trip is perfect timing – not only do I get to enjoy time with my niece and nephews, tonight it is the Brit Awards, so I also get to catch up on some British pop culture.

I traveled over in what I consider to be the perfect travel attire – comfy, cotton trousers, sneakers and a cashmere jumper.  Easy for getting through security – no belts etc., and easy to relax and stay warm in on the flight.

I arrived yesterday to two pairs of shoes and a leather jacket:)  All items that I’d asked my lovely Mum to order for me from stores over here.  More on the shoes later but suffice to say they are fabulous!  The jacket is the red leather jacket from Zara and using the current exchange rate, and what with sales tax in the US, it was quite a bit cheaper to buy it here.  It is stunning, beautifully made, fabulous quality and lovely soft leather – I was worried it might be a bit stiff.  The only thing I’d change is the size of the zipper pulls – not sure why Zara insist on using huge zips on all their jackets?

So today I’m off for a brisk run over the moors to clear my jet lag and then off to Primark for an hour or so – all on my own:)  Before I report back here are some other highlights so far:)

A couple of cocktails on my own:)

Leather.

I am getting so excited about my trip ‘home’ next week.  Yes I’ll miss MM and the kids – but that is what Skype is for no?  I’m still in a packing quandary but I see light at the end of the tunnel – now if it was sunlight not the threat of snow that would make things 10x easier.  But hey ho it is England and nothing is more certain than the uncertainty of British weather.

I was picking up a few things for friends and family yesterday.  One of the most requested items funnily enough is nail polish.  OPI is half the price here.  Mum wants A-to-Zurich and Sue wants Nein Nein Nein.  I’ve been 50% successful – will keep looking Mum!  Now, if I rate shopping for myself, I was 100% successful and I got myself a new favorite polish.  I like nudes but some of them make my yellowy skin tone just looked so washed out when I haven’t had any sun.  I found this one – My Very First Knockwurst – it’s a lovely grey nude and as ever it goes on beautifully.  Still need to sort out my cuticles though – this darn weather plays havoc with my hands!

Image

It was a tad dreary this morning – and I wanted to wear a snuggly knit.  Also, I have decided that my AllSaints leather trousers need to be worn for everyday wear too – they were being saved for ‘best’ and therefore hardly worn.  They are actually really comfy and warm – I love them with sneakers and a jumper.  The Boden sparkle Skye jumper is perfect – and there are still quite a few of the regular versions in the clearance.  You might want to size down if between sizes though as the fit is loose.  I’m wearing it over a Forever21 color blocked top – mainly because it was close at hand this morning.  Of course the sneakers are the Ash Alex.  Sorry about the raindrops on film – not sure I had the right exposure considering how dark it was!

A man’s best friend.

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned before but MM and I are currently watching the entire collection of The West Wing.  I bought it for him a couple of years ago and it’s only now we’ve had the courage to start watching it all again.  I am flabbergasted how so many issues that Aaron Sorkin wrote about are still relevant today.  We watched an episode on gun control last night and I had to keep reminding myself that The West Wing is fictional – it was uncanny.

I’m about to head out for a tacos and margarita lunch with MM.  I can’t wait.  While I do wait though, we just had a power cut here – it must be all the rain making trees keel over in the soft ground. So the dogs and I passed the time with a little photo shoot.  Tennyson couldn’t resist getting in the action – he’s a bit of a diva, Rosie stayed out of it – she’s not too proud to admit her heydays are over – so she directed off camera.

I’m layered up today as it is cold but keeps threatening to warm up – I’m ready for it – come on sunshine stop hiding away!  I’m wearing one of my first ever AllSaints jumpers – so old I can’t remember the name – over a Forever 21 color block long sleeve t-shirt.  The jeans are H&M coated jeggings and the boots are the AllSaints Bonny Cuban.  Oh and the scarf is H&M from last year – I love the lips.  I think lips are almost better than hearts for Valentine’s Day – so I might drag it out on the 14th again – though I do still despise Valentine’s Day!

A natural high.

So I paid a visit to see Charlie yesterday at the AllSaints concession in Bloomingdale’s here in Atlanta.  The lovely Charlie went above and beyond the call of duty to help and advise me.  I tried on everything I could in the limited time available.  Rubbish me didn’t get any photos – I just didn’t think sorry!  I was too busy chatting with Charlie about the brand, and admiring the new, improved layout of the store and the fabulous new collection.

I can report back on the following items though:

1. The Sago jumper dress is gorgeous – sexy, drapey and SO flattering with leggings or jeans.  I’m waiting for the black to come in and then it will be mine – make sure you size down.

2. The Riviera dress – now in jersey it just didn’t work – the slits are so high at the thigh and the jersey falls so that ALL my thigh was on show.  Now my legs ain’t bad but showing them up to my hoo-ha at my age just ain’t decent.  The Riviera in the silk peony print, however, was DIVINE!  The silk means it falls a little more conservatively at the front.  Yes there are still splits at each side – but I felt sexy in this, not mutton.  I am sorely tempted by the peony print but I’m not really a navy girl so will be waiting for the mono print.  I have VERY high hopes for this dress.

3. The Camille jersey dress – hmmm I sized down and it still felt a bit blah – just too shapeless I’m afraid.

4. The Venice tee dress – I bought this!  In Charcoal, and wait for it – in a size UK 4!!!! No way am I a 4 (US 0) but I’ll take it!  (Lovely Charlie massaged my ego telling me how much weight I’d lost – no wonder his sales numbers are up!).

5. The Ggt Daiaki dress – I really loved the silhouette of this dress – and it would look so cool, edgy and sophisticated with leggings.  Unfortunately my boobs meant that the buttons gaped – it would have been mine were it not for that – sizing up would have made it too sack like:(

6. The Peony sleeveless crew neck – on the hanger this looked perfect – on me it looked dreadful.  AllSaints here is a plea to you – stop making your armholes SO big – I don’t want to show my bra never mind the roll of flab that sits above it – smaller arm holes would be far more flattering and protect others from viewing far too much, thank you.

As I walked out of Bloomingdale’s I was delighted to see a new Ted Baker concession.  My sister loves Ted Baker and we often have a look when we’re at the Trafford Center.  Since my visit yesterday I have been thinking longingly about this beauty – the Rainbow Viewpoint dress.  Loud yes, but it reminds me so much of London I might just have to have it.

Without wanting to sound completely self righteous, I had the most amazing run on the treadmill this morning so I was still high as a kite when I took my photos today…I’m wearing the AllSaints Godiva sweater, from the sale last year, layered over an H&M tank dress, with the Zara snake print trousers and my Acne Pistols.

Another wish list.

I am a complete brand obsessive – meaning once I find a brand I love I can never have enough.  I am currently obsessed with J.Crew, Boden, Zara, Rag & Bone, Hudson Jeans and of course AllSaints.  I tend to go through stages with each where I am totally lusting over everything on their website.  It’s an eclectic mix, it has to be said, but oddly enough it all seems to mesh together quite well in the closet, and can be mixed appropriately for various occasions.

I’m currently obsessing over EVERYTHING on the AllSaints website.  Their new collection is perfection.  I have managed to stay away for a while but my cart is now up to $1500.  It is a wish list of sorts.  I certainly won’t be ordering all of it, but right now I have no idea how to cull it.  I WANT IT ALL.

First I HAVE to have this Kayo sweater dress – with a silk body it is just divine.  I’d wear this with leggings or bare legs in the Spring with my Newbury boots.

WK107C-33-1

Next the Sago sweater dress in black – I just love the drape and the open shoulder.  Again perfect with skinnies or leggings and ankle boots.

WK228C-33-1

For summer I would live in the Camille jersey dress and Venice tee dress.  Both perfectly versatile for the hot Atlanta summer – I love the grey in both – perfect with sunkissed legs.

WD138C-7-1

WD147C-107-1

Finally I have a casual wedding to attend in Stockholm in August and I plan to be wearing this.  I just adore it – it’s only available on the UK site right now – the Mono Riviera dress.  This print is amazing.

WD176C-250-1

There is more in my cart – the Kayo dress and the Oran top, for example.  It seriously is one of the best collections of clothes I’ve seen from AllSaints.  I’m smitten.  I’ll let you know what I order after I’ve nipped to Bloomingdale’s to see my friends at the AllSaints concession there:)

Here’s today’s outfit.  The Zara tartan crops which, be warned, are VERY slim fitting, worn with the AllSaints Char jumper (in honor of my current obsession), with the Zara court shoes.

These boots were made for walking…

What a treat in store for me this week!  After watching the Golden Globes live on Sunday it means I have Girls, Downton Abbey and some Real Housewives recorded for my viewing pleasure!  In addition I’ve also picked up a new book at last – American Psycho.  MM has been encouraging me to read it for some time now…I hope it’s as good as he says it is – we rarely enjoy the same books! It’s the perfect weather for staying in and curling up on the sofa with a good book – it’s wet, wet, wet here.

Braving the rain today I opted for a pair of my Frye’s.  Don’t panic there are no leather soles here and all I’m doing is walking from the car to the office – not enough exposure to warrant the Hunters.  These are the Veronica Slouch and they are a gorgeous dark, nutty brown – is that a good description?  Maybe not.  The jumper is one of my favorites from AllSaints – the Ellil in smoke.  I love this jumper so much – the cut and drape are perfect and the buckle detail on the neck gives this knit a bit of edginess.  I’m wearing it over an H&M vest dress for warmth – plus I find they keep some of the lumps and bumps at bay, working as a smoother or a shaper.  The jeans are  Hudson Collins.  It’s five weeks since my last haircut and I’m desperate for one again – thank goodness I have an appointment on Friday – it’s feeling rather bouffant in this weather.

IMG_4116

I found a photo of an outfit I wore last week that I forgot to post.  I’m doing it now as it’s a rare photo of me in a skirt – the H&M Grey Concept skirt, worn with a Target belt and a Zara top.  The fabulous Boden military jacket is from AW 2011.  If you ever see one on eBay don’t miss out – it has the most beautiful fit and is lined with purple velvet.  The boots are REALLY old Loft suede booties that I haven’t worn for years.  It’s great to rediscovering items and now having easy access to them in my new closet!
