Trying it for size.

So yesterday morning was a tad surreal.  I woke up with a stonking hangover to start with.  My tolerance for alcohol is pathetic these days and after a very relaxing Thursday evening spent in front of some DVRd Real Housewife episodes with a bottle of chardonnay I was useless come Friday morning.  A bit rubbish really as I had to rise early and head up way outside I-285 with our project manager to visit a bath tub manufacturer.  Uuuurrrggh.  I threw some work out gear on knowing I’d potentially be hopping in and out of tubs to try them for size and comfort.  All in all it was a successful trip but I did feel a bit weird sitting in a bath tub in the middle of a factory floor with 6 burly blokes looking at me.  Sorry no photo:)

Even with the bottle of chard the night before I was more than thrilled later in the day when I got to my Jenny Craig appointment that I’d lost just over another 2 lbs!  Whooopppeee that’s 6 lbs in 2 weeks!  Now imagine if I hadn’t had drank those 1000 calories the night before?  Obviously I’m allowed to cheat every now and then…

I think the reason I indulged on Thursday evening was that I knew this weekend was going to be manic.  This morning was Poppy’s ballet recital.  Now in the past she has done ballet through daycare, this year we signed up at Atlanta Ballet School and goodness me the rules, regulations and instructions have had me as a mother terrified all year that I’ll do something wrong.  The bun as to be perfect every week and the uniform has to be worn etc. etc…it has, if truth be told, taken some of the fun out of it for both of us.  I’m also a little aggrieved at the amount of money I’ve been asked for what with tuition, recital fees, uniform purchase, ticket purchase and then we were told no photographs at the recital but we could buy photos and videos for a fee – you’re kidding me!  I was also mad as hell when we arrived at the theater to find that all the girls had to wait in a room that was covered wall to wall in merchandise, displayed purely for 6 year old girls to fall in love with and then beg their parents to purchase for them.  I dug my heels in and managed to distract her but come on!  Anyway despite my irritation the recital performance was fabulous and Poppy yet again has a very proud Mommy and Daddy.

Tomorrow is Poppy’s birthday party, plus it’s Mother’s Day here – which I hadn’t realized when I booked it so I am really hoping some of her friends actually show up.  Shockingly bad organization on my part but I’d forgotten all about Mother’s Day once the UK one had been and gone with me successfully getting a card and flowers to Bury, but Happy Mother’s day Mum (again!) and to all the lovely Moms, Mums and Mothers out there xx

As it is MUCH cooler here today I opted for a jacket that I love but haven’t worn too much – the grey jungle cat Boden trimmed velvet blazer from AW 2011 – which is now in clearance at $41.40 – get one quick!!  I love it – it fits perfectly really well tailored.  I wore it with the LE pale iris Sassy Stitch top from AW 2011 – another of my favorite tops – I just wish it wasn’t dry clean only as I’m less likely to wear it often.  Going for an edgier look (amazing what a new haircut can do) I paired them with my Gap grey legging jeans, Gucci belt, and some Nine West mid heel pointed pumps similar to these.  My favorite black bag came out of the closet too after I had put it in storage for summer – a hint that a lovely nude YSL Roady would be perfect to add to my collection…

So Hugh doesn’t feel left out and to thank him for his Mother’s day gift hurled at me as he walked in from daycare on Friday, here is my lovely little man in his new Mini Boden tee shirt – he also has the cricket one which he is completely befuddled by.  Golly I love their clothes for boys.

The real me.

Okay so I know I said I was trying to grow my hair and many of you were very good at encouraging me but I have no staying power.  Actually I polled a couple of people who I knew would give me their honest opinion.  One being MM who said even though he likes my hair long he prefers it short.  This kinda made me question my sanity.  Why would I go through the hell of growing my hair, especially in the heat and humidity of an Atlanta summer when MM prefers it short?  In addition to that, and more importantly I think, I actually prefer it short – I feel like the real me with it short if that makes sense…?  So instead of opting for a painful summer of bouffant frizz I booked myself in to see my favorite hairdresser O’Neil at Van Michael in Virginia Highlands.  He seemed quite happy to see me back and though we agreed that as short as my previous cut was not for me, he also agreed that he favors short hair on me – so he proceeded to de-mullet me.  I now know for sure that I am a short hair kinda gal as I immediately felt groomed, sassy and a little more urban and a little less mumsy.  Hurray for that hey?

I told you yesterday that I had ordered the Zara Basic sandal – sad news folks I had to cancel the order.  On a whim I popped into the store here to see if they had the black in my size but it turns out no size is my size.  My feet are too wide to get in them so my little toes were left perching over the front strap – not a good look.  The search for the perfect sandal for my feet continues.  It has to be said though if you have narrower feet and regular toes the sandals are gorgeous.  In order to raise my spirits again I headed into H&M for a ‘browse’.  Now in my case there is no such thing as just a browse in H&M – I always see something worth buying.  Today I got 3 fabulous linen blend long sleeve tops from their Basics line – coral, cream and brown – at $17.95 each they are perfect for throwing on over a tank.  I’ve trawled their website and can’t find an image so will post a photo soon.

To help take me from 40 year old mom to 40 year old hot chick (tongue in cheek here Daily Mail readers!!) I wore my AllSaints Coli top, Gap black legging jeans and my lovely Sam Edelman Alvin loafers.

So what do you think of the new haircut?

Window shopping.

With the impending house renovations I REALLY am trying to curb my personal spending.  It’s hard though.  Sometimes I try to ‘bulk’ buy at the start of a season and tell myself ‘right I’m done now, I have this season’s closet, no more purchases needed’.  It never works.  I should know by now that the canny retailers keep us coming back month after month, or week after week in some cases, as their new items hit the stores.  I thought that by ceasing my visits to the mall this would stop me from seeing anything new and therefore my austerity measures would be intact.  Only problem is I use my computer every day and for some reason when I need a break I find myself visiting BodenUSA.com, US.AllSaints.com or today it was Zara.com.  I’m an online window shopping addict – or should that be just shopping addict?

Several things unfortunately caught my eye today that I am now lusting after.  This gorgeous top is from AllSaints and is the perfect little number for summer cocktails.

Paired with these Petrel Brodie jeans in vintage pink it would look fabulous.  I actually want these jeans in all the colors available and I’m planning a little trying on session soon with my favorite AllSaints employee, Charlie, at the Bloomingdale’s concession in Lenox Mall!

I was inspired to visit the Zara website after visiting Doesmybumlook40.blogspot.com blog by Kat back in England.  She also got a mention in the Daily Mail article and I love her style – very urban chic and she accessorizes brilliantly.  She loves Zara and though we have one here in Atlanta I rarely go in there.  Now unfortunately I have discovered that their website is brilliant and what’s even better is that free shipping is standard – hooray!

It’s their shoes I have particularly fallen in love with.  These black pumps are just gorgeous and are on my wish list.

Now these sandals were on my wish list but as I kept flipping back to them this morning I managed to convince myself that $50 for a pair of fabulous looking sandals was too good to miss – so they are now heading my way courtesy of UPS.  I need to earn more money as I want them in every color.  I hope they fit as I find sandals really hard to buy – I have funny sticky out toes and they get stuck in strappy sandals and hang out of the sides – an appalling look, so I’m hoping this single strap at the front will keep my little toes safely ensconced.

I now feel horribly guilty about ordering them as we just went to pick granite out for the new bathroom and kitchen counter tops.  Of course the granite we like is the most expensive – surely $50 sandals won’t stop me getting the granite of my choice?

It’s raining here today so a bit cooler than it has been.  I decided to take advantage of it and wear some jeans while I can.  These are dark green legging jeans from Gap, worn with a snake print tee shirt from Express and my black patent Tory Burch Eddies.  My studded cuff is also Tory Burch.  I car pooled with MM today so was lucky enough to have a photographer – thanks honey:)

A convoluted path.

After the Daily Mail article yesterday and some of the comments made I was struck by how many people assumed that any woman who blogs is a stay at home mom spending all her Husband’s hard earned cash.  The comments were obviously made by people who didn’t read the article in detail as Beth was a lawyer and now works as a stylist, and Avril used to work in banking so earned her own money – and I’m sure she’ll be earning more of her own money given her business savvy and the success of her blog.  More to the point though why is staying at home seen as being less of a commitment than working out of the house?  The time I have spent at home during my maternity leaves has only demonstrated to me that staying at home is the hardest job in the world and not one for me.  Working is easy in comparison.

These days I am lucky – I really feel I have struck the balance between time at home and time working.  I spent years trying to climb the corporate ladder and as the offices got bigger and the titles got grander neither the compensation nor the satisfaction increased proportionally.  “More responsibility and time in the office please, but you’re only going to get a small bump in pay as you were already being paid a lot.”  What???  No thanks.

The key thing I learned during my PhD was that I no longer wanted to work in a laboratory or academia.  I yearned for the ‘glamour’ of travel and business meetings.  In 1997 I started work as an IT Consultant for PwC.  I loved it – we were all new graduates embarking on our first ‘proper’ jobs.  We had money at last and 20 of us spent about 12 weeks together on a coding crash course – it was like being a student again but I was actually getting paid!  Of course there was no glamour involved whatsoever.  We sat in our office in London Bridge waiting to be assigned a project, bored then deflated that we’d be working around the corner in Holborn, not Barcelona.  I soon realized though that being London based was quite exciting and I loved the thrill of being in the City.  I jumped ship and went to work as a Business Analyst at an investment bank.  It opened a world of opportunity to me – one I never knew existed.  For a while I felt like a fish out of water surrounded by spread collars, Windsor knots and cufflinks but I soon found my bearings.  I would have stayed there – I had good friends and I was having fun – but MM came home one day and told me we had the chance to move to Atlanta.  Of course I was going to go – but I wanted to work too which back then meant that I needed a job that would provide me with a visa – so off I went back to PwC.  I was taking the risk that as a global company they would transfer me to Atlanta – and they did.

Moving here was far more of a culture shock than I ever imagined.  My first project was in Manchester, New Hampshire so every Monday I was commuting via a 4 hour flight.  I hated it.  I hated the travel and the work culture was far more disciplined than I had experienced in the past.  Plus everyone seemed to have an MBA – my PhD suddenly meant nothing.  After getting out and starting my MBA I knew I had to get out of IT all together – jobs were plentiful and it paid well but it just wasn’t for me.  My MBA allowed me to make a career change into strategy and marketing but it seemed that with every job I started something happened – Mirant went bankrupt and then at The Home Depot the VP who hired me left and the team was dissolved.  I soon became disillusioned with corporate America.  I contracted for a while as a consultant which was fabulous especially while I had my daughter – I relished the flexibility.  After a while though my ambition drew me back to a corporate career and I worked in brand management for IHG.  It was brilliant working for a British company over here.  Everything suddenly seemed more comfortable and more familiar and for the first time ‘the World’ was not the 50 States, and my accent was just one of many European accents.  As with all companies though changes came and I was struggling with the fact that my children were getting older – I wanted to be around them more instead of dropping them at daycare from 8 till 6 every day.  Fortunately MM’s business was going from strength to strength and, as reluctant as we were to put all our eggs in one basket, I quit IHG to work with him almost 2 and a half years ago.

Yes it’s a bit weird sometimes being in the office with MM – I felt like an intruder to begin with – but we keep out of each others way.  I can now work four days a week and be home for 3pm when my daughter gets off the school bus and best of all Friday is My Day!  It took a few risks and a convoluted path to get here but I have reached my personal utopia when it comes to work/life balance.

So in general many of us bloggers have lots of other stuff going on too.  Blogging in many cases is something we make time to do because we enjoy it – just like going for a run or watching a football game.  Many of us started it with no expectations and so like me we are thrilled and a little overwhelmed with the great positive feedback and comments we receive.  I am very happy if I can distract you for 10 minutes or so everyday with my little post and outfit of the day.  Thank you xx

Today I had to dash to the dentist with my daughter before work so threw on my Hudsons and this cute top from J.Crew from a couple of years ago.  The shoes are Sam Edleman from Zappos.com. The black beaded bracelets are H&M and the earrings were dirt cheap from Target.  (Sorry for the poor quality it was dark at 7am!)

A strange way to begin the week.

What an exciting morning – welcome to those of you who have popped by after seeing my blog mentioned in the Daily Mail – I hope you hang around and enjoy reading my posts.  It was MM* who encouraged me to start blogging as a means to help keep my family and friends on both sides of the Atlantic connected with events, and also as a fun, creative outlet to share my thoughts, passions and opinions.  I am happy to see from the comments on the Daily Mail article that there are many other people out there with strong opinions that they like to share!

So as I was neglecting my family this morning and checking myself out in the mirror every couple of minutes and wondering where I might spend my Husband’s money today I almost decided to take a day off from posting – but where’s the fun in that?;)

I had to drag the children out of bed this morning – both of them completely exhausted from a weekend at the pool.  I am so proud of my daughter – not yet 6 – she passed her swim test that allows her to use the slide at the pool.  It’s a huge milestone for anyone who is less than 4ft tall and thus not eligible to slide without passing the test due to the height restriction.  She had to swim a full length freestyle and then tread water for a minute.  I’ve never seen her so determined and she wore that green wristband with pride all weekend long!

I’m still vacillating over growing my hair – I wish it was a quick fix.  I’m definitely heading into bouffant territory but I think I’m going to continue with the pain.  Every time I see cute pixie cut though I start question my decision, plus for the first time in 21 years I have MM telling me he now prefers short hair!

I opted to wear something bright and cheery today to start the penultimate week of the school year.  We all have so many events and activities this week I am praying that coffee and bright colors will keep my mood buoyant.  I’m wearing my Boden silk whisper top from 2011, a J.Crew skirt from a couple of springs ago, my Tory Burch sand Revas and the necklace and belt are both Target who always have great cheap and cheerful accessories.

The Daily Mail!

Super excited and honored to be mentioned by the Daily Mail in the UK as one of the best of the other blogs in their article on School-gate Icons featuring my blogging buddy Avril at SchoolGateStyle.com, along with other great bloggers – what a privilege to be in such great company!

I’ve never been so happy to be called ‘unpretentious’!

M&S is calling.

Given my trip back to Blighty is now just over a month away I thought I’d have a quick peak at the Marks & Spencer’s website.  M&S and Boots are the two stores that I miss most over here in the States – they are so quintessentially British.  No matter that M&S takes an occasional bashing, I am still a die hard fan.  I inherited a love for all things M&S from my Mum, and whether I’ve bought knickers and bras, oversize men’s cardigans or my first career suits, I have loved everything from M&S that I have ever owned.  I remember walking into the Marble Arch store and being flabbergasted at the choices available versus our little store in Bury (which isn’t so little these days).  M&S have dressed me for every occasion from my church confirmation to my interview for my first City job to friends’ weddings.  I can’t wait to get back in there!  MM still laughs at my story of a business trip to Paris when I was the junior member of the team and I had to collect lunch for everyone – M&S butties for goodness sakes – in Paris!!

In the 12 years I’ve lived here M&S has had it’s ups and downs and has diversified it’s offering significantly.  The Limited collection is still pretty new to me but here are some items I have my beady eye on, again some are very ‘British’ and I like to wear things that you can’t necessarily buy here in Lenox Square Mall.

I love this crown print jersey tee – very patriotic and a great on trend color:

Anything with animals on always grabs my attention and this very English Bull Dog print tank will look great with a fun pair of shorts.

This bird print shell top is again very on trend and similar to a lot of prints I’ve seen on ASOS online.  I have to get my hands on this:

Finally I adore this bird cage print tee and it’s in the sale at 12 GBP (no idea where my pound sign is on my keyboard)!  I might have to get Mum to pop in this week and see if she can pick it up for me.  My only quibble with it is that I wish the print ran along the back of the tee too.

Finally I’m lusting after this Per Una necklace:

It’s very similar in style to the chunky heart necklace I’ve just been looking at in this month’s issue of Lucky magazine on Gia Coppola:

Hmmm maybe I better start thinking about keeping some space free in my bags?  The kids won’t need to take much with them will they?

A work in progress.

We met with our contractor the other day.  He came with his crew to get some last minute measurements before delivering our final quote.  We’ve been in the house for just over 4 years and to be honest the work is really more cosmetic than necessary.  We are having a new master bathroom, replacing the remaining carpeted floors with hardwoods and adding granite and a new back splash in the kitchen.  Much to my delight I have also managed to squeeze in a new walk-in closet into the design!  Well they might as well while they’re here and doing our bedroom floors right?  Our current closet isn’t small – certainly not by UK standards, but MM is gradually surrendering more and more space to my ever increasing collection of clothes.  I’m not very good at getting rid of stuff – or maybe I’m just getting better at choosing clothing I love and cherish for longer?

My current overcrowded closet space (not including my shoe closet or the winter clothes now in storage downstairs!):

The pool at the Y opened yesterday – summer is officially here!  Going to the pool with a 4 and 6 year old always requires preparation, though MM has it down to quite a fine art these days.  Snacks are required so they can refuel on peanut butter sandwiches, watermelon and strawberries, plus of course pool toys, sunblock, towels and changes of clothes.  It’s never a case of just ‘nipping’ to the pool – proper planning is required.

I got to try out some of my new summer arrivals for the first time too.  I really like the Boden towelling hoody especially in this candy stripe – though I’m not a fan of the big white buttons.  I may just cut them off as I think they look a bit cheap.  It’s currently in the sale at $66.30 which I think is a bargain given the quality of the fabric – it will last many summer seasons.  If truth be told it probably is a little too warm to wear here in Atlanta over a bathing suit.  I think it’s much better suited to a blustery Mediterranean beach but I’ll have to wait to test that theory until after the new floors, bathroom and closet!

Yesterday I wore the ruffle trim tankini in Bluebell bud which I adore and wore on our trip to Tybee Island at Spring break.  Today I’m wearing the Apple stripe for the first time – I think I prefer this color but it is a close call.  I’m very glad I bought 3 colors in this suit – plus I have the tankini tops and the bikini tops so I will get maximum wear out of them.  All the pieces are currently on sale and all but the navy stripe are available.  I was hesitant to photograph myself in a bikini for fear of attracting the ‘reader’s wives’ followers but hey I’m here to show you how items of clothes look on real women so here goes – although I did opt to keep my shorts on:)

I hope there aren’t too many Cinco de Mayo hangovers out there today.  I enjoyed a couple of margaritas with my healthy chicken burritos last night so it’s back on the wagon for me today.

Flat pack hell aka IKEA

I’m so happy it’s Friday.  The end of the school year is taking its toll.  It’s filled with birthday parties, ballet recitals, pool openings and teacher appreciation days.  I am in constant flux of running errands and driving people around town.  Dealing with two separate teacher appreciation weeks for the first time is driving me nuts.  Don’t get me wrong I value our teachers and I am in awe of the work they do but this week alone I have had requests from Hugh’s daycare for cash, presents, cards and lunch for the teachers.  I’m more than happy to help provide a fun lunch but sometimes I feel I’m being asked for donations every month – and it’s not like we don’t already pay them to take care of our son.  Maybe I’m being too harsh but from Christmas bonuses to Valentine’s Day to teacher’s birthdays and teacher appreciation week I’m starting to feel a tad irritated.  Plus I then get invited to Muffins for Mothers at 4pm on a Friday afternoon!  What working Mom is going to want to do that before a commute home on a Friday?  They used to have it in the morning for breakfast when we dropped the children off, which makes far more sense, and I’ve just made the daycare Director perfectly aware of that.  OK vent over and done with.

MM had the morning off today and we’ve had the pleasure of each others company in IKEA for the past 2 hours.  My daughter turns 6 on the 18th May and her request for some weeks now has been for a more ‘grown up’ bedroom.  It’s not childish now but she wants a desk for homework, more storage, and more grown up art on the walls.  I’m actually very impressed that she wants these for presents instead of more dolls – which do get played with, but I’m sure Ken is up to something as there seems to be an ever increasing population of them every time I enter her room.

I love IKEA‘s products – I wouldn’t want the entire house furnished in IKEA but we have fabulous bar stools, a couple of beds, storage solutions and some dining chairs from there and they all look great.  They obviously aren’t built to last years but they do the job and look pretty cool.  What I really don’t like is the IKEA store itself.  Even when you enter with a list of the specific items needed I guarantee you will never get out in less than 2 hrs.  I’ve even learned a few short cuts through the maze of furniture but still I can’t get out quickly.  I write down every code so that I can go immediately to the correct warehouse shelf, but every time there’s an issue – I write it down incorrectly, we change our mind on the way down there and forget the new number, or we mix up items and end up having to search on the computer terminals.  None of it IKEA’s fault I hasten to add – always user error.  Then of course the flat packs are heavier than lead weights so negotiating them out of the store requires strength and skill, not to mention we had omitted to remove the car seats from my car, so we ended up straddling the back seat unclipping awkward child restraints so we could lower the back seats!  Aaarggh!  In 90 degree heat and humidity too – yuk!  Well all we have to do now is to work as a cohesive team and calmly assemble said flat packs.  Normally this involves me trying to instruct MM, getting exasperated with him for having no logical or spatial reasoning, then telling him to get out of the way and let me just do it on my own…all part of his cunning plan.  I promise to post photos of this sequence of events over the coming evenings while we try to assemble the desk and shelves quietly once the children are in bed.  Or as MM suggested S. and his girlfriend will be here by then and surely living in Stockholm makes one an expert on assembling IKEA??:)

Before the excitement of IKEA I headed to Jenny Craig for my first weigh in.  I am thrilled to say I lost a whole 3.8lbs this week!!!  I’m only trying to lose about 15lbs in total so I hope it keeps coming off this quickly.  I haven’t felt hungry at all due to eating all the healthy fruit and veg that Jenny Craig encourages you to volumize with.  I should be fast as lightning on my morning run tomorrow!

Poppy and I before the school run this morning:

I was asked the other day, by Diane, if I have any favorite tunics that I go back to time and again?  Well I do try and rotate my clothes but the one that I love is from last summer and it’s the Terrazzo Tunic.  It’s so comfortable – I know some really disliked it thinking the print was very 1970’s wallpaper but I am definitely one of its fans!  I’m wearing it here with my Boden spot prize necklace from #BodenMondays twitter fun!

To all my readers in the UK enjoy your long weekend and Monday Bank Holiday!

And the verdict is in…

Blunderbuss is freakin’ awesome!!!!  Jack White is a genius – I cannot stop listening to this album.  It’s everything a White Stripes fan is looking for.  There’s a great mix of Americana, blues and funk, a great example being my favorite single on the album Trash Tongue Talker – I can’t stop watching the YouTube video – I love Jack!  I’m gutted that there aren’t more dates on his tour I’d do anything to be at Hammersmith Apollo, I’m even back in the UK then but it’s all sold out…

I’m praying the weather improves in the UK by June.  It’s atrocious there right now and I’m going to have the annual dilemma of packing for every climate.  Fortunately the advantage of my Boden tunics is I can wear them with skinny jeans or bare legged so all I need to do now is pick the ones to take from my copious collection!  I sneakily bought another the other day – a clearance bargain I say – calm down!  I bought the coal Everyday Jersey Tunic early in the AW 2011 season and I have to admit it took a while to grow on me but I always get great comments when I wear it.  Here it is with the Boden cashmere wrap and piped shoe boots – seems an eternity now since I had to wear tights!

I looked at the blue one again and again and just couldn’t convince myself I that I liked it enough, if at all, to order, especially as I tend to wear black in the winter and this just seemed too garish.  As spring advanced though I found myself musing over how it would look as a dress with bare legs.  I definitely think the colors are more summery and by pure happenstance as I was browsing one day, as I often do on the Boden site, there it was – a size 6 with my name on it for the bargain price of $30!  I like it a lot as a dress and it will definitely get plenty of wear…now NO MORE tunics till AW 2012!!  However you all are free to keep looking as items keep popping back into the clearance section.

Tuesday has recently become one of my favorite days since I discovered Lululemon release their new items every Monday night.  One of the first things I do sitting at the breakfast bar with my coffee is to click my bookmark for the Lululemon website and browse the fabulous new colors and prints.  My two favorites today are the new pace setter skirt in beachy floral white fossil/black and the swiftly racerback in porcelain – the two will look great together, hmmm I’m convincing myself more so as I write!

I also discovered there is a new Lululemon store opening close to my house – I may just have to nip by there on the way to Poppy’s ballet class today!!  Happy May Day!
