Friday evening in ER

ww

We had rather an eventful Friday. The kids and I were excited to head over to our friends’ house across the street for some Friday R&R. Our Husbands arrived after work and we were all settling into a fun evening of conversation and wine. I decided I needed the loo before I got comfortable chatting outside. I got up with gusto and headed promptly towards the powder room. Only I didn’t realize that their glass sliding door was shut…oh yes…it was dusk, there was no reflection and I walked smack bang right into it. All I remember saying as it shattered was ‘Oh no I thought it was open!’.

My Husband took me straight to ER where I had 8 stitches in my left boob where a shard had slit the skin – it could have been way worse and I am happy to report I still have 2 nipples. I have a very black eye and feel very remorseful about the damage I caused. On the plus side the doctor who stitched me was a hot and I got some great pain meds 🙂 Every cloud and all that!

I’ve been well cared for by the kids and my amazing husband – who is now applying tape to all our glass doors – laugh a minute hey!?

I actually managed to properly dress myself today, though makeup and contact lenses are still a step too far. If only it had been closer to Halloween I wouldn’t even need to think about a costume!

At least I made it to 43 before having stitches or a black eye!

How do you feel about hats?

I was never a hat person till a few years ago. Here in the US most people must own at least one baseball cap even if they never wear it. I found it easy to start wearing caps to sporting events like NASCAR, baseball and football, and then I found myself gravitating to wearing them out and about on a bad hair day. Now I own several and I’ve just added a J.Crew felt Fedora to my collection. I LOVE it. This is a S/M I’m wearing but if you have a lot of hair you may need to size up.

This Fedora is a perfect size for me – the brim isn’t too big and it sits nicely on top of my head. I’m always scared of being overwhelmed by hats having short hair. It comes in grey, navy and black, and all three colors are classics.

If I had longer hair I’d love any of these broader brimmed hats from ASOS.

Have you been tempted by a Fedora yet? I think you’ll be surprised how easy they are to wear – I certainly got plenty of compliments at the Mall this morning – though the Husband says he feels like he should be sitting in The Blind Beggar with me…or that I have an uncanny resemblance to Dave Angel, Eco Warrier.

Yesterday I was dashing around and had to throw something on quickly after yoga. This River Island dress is brilliant – simple to wear yet it certainly makes a statement.

After doing a bunch of returns at the Mall this morning and cleaning my windows we’re now off for margaritas and tacos – perfect! Happy weekend!

Easy dressing

In between cheer practices, runs, shelf assembly and dog walks, I dashed into Target on Sunday – mainly to stock up on Fall fashions for the kids, but also to take a quick peek at the Altuzarra collection for Target. If you are waiting for your package to arrive from NAP you may want to skip this part. In fact even though it is beautifully presented on NAP, I still don’t get why they are selling these collaborations, though it obviously increases the hype and desirability. In the flesh I was really disappointed.

I’ve read lots of bloggers who have loved it and even claim it is the best collaboration to date. Maybe it is my familiarity with Target that clouds my judgement. I love Target, don’t get me wrong. As I have mentioned for kids clothes they are fabulous – great value and great designs – but their women’s wear always seems cheap – which of course it is. Overall I found the fabrics on the Altuzarra items to be cheap feeling, and the finishing was poor – but having said that where else can you get designer duds for less than $50 a piece? My problem is I see them as Target, not designer. I just don’t get it. Why would you want to wear something that is instantly recognizable as Altuzarra FOR TARGET? One of the reasons I didn’t buy anything in the Pete Pilloto collection was that I recognize it through a crowd instantly. Anyway here are the photos so you can make your own decision.

I loved the color of these trousers but the velvet felt stiff and thin, and the finishing on the waistband was poor.

IMG_0916

I loved the dresses till I inspected them close up – the sequins seemed cheap and the finishing poor.

IMG_0919

This sweatshirt is nice – but really crumpled on the the hanger and there were threads hanging off everyone of them! Plus that print is too recognizable for me.

IMG_0920 I liked the peasant blouse and the shirt on the hanger. However, the peasant top did nothing for me at all…I tried to like it but just so not me.

IMG_0918 IMG_0923 IMG_0924

I liked the shirt a lot, and I actually carried it to the till, but I changed my mind, deciding I was buying for the hype and not because I loved it. I have no regrets about leaving it behind.

Maybe if the presentation in Target was nicer I’d be more enamored, but Target still feels like Target to me. I’m passing on this one.

The week to date has been crazy too with Drs appointments and school conferences, so I find a dress, jacket and sneakers is the easiest way to dress to stay presentable and comfortable.

Did you buy from the Altuzarra collection? Am I being too harsh?

Capes, blankets, shawls or throws?

I don’t care what you call them – I am officially obsessed. If you haven’t seen images similar to these then you have been hiding under a rock for the past two months – good for you! This is the Burberry Blanket which you can pay a ridiculous amount extra to have monogrammed with your initials. Unfortunately it is already sold out.

So what happens now? Even if you have $1400 stuffed under your sofa cushions you can’t buy one. Well thank goodness we have ASOS. The only challenge now is to choose which one. Or, if you’re not one for challenges, just buy them all.

Aren’t they gorgeous? I personally adore the burgundy striped cape – the perfect Fall color and one which you will see me wearing a lot of this year. I can see myself wearing it over jeans and a tee with my burgundy Newburys. I have, however, just ordered the camel cape in lieu of a camel coat. Not only are these capes gorgeous and well priced at less than $50, they also stink of practicality for our Atlanta Fall/Winter climate. I’ll even be using mine now for throwing around my shoulders in our frigid office air conditioning.

Another new purchase arrived this week, which I am head over heels with. Instead of the Chanel Boy bag that I’ve been holding out for (yeah right in my dreams!) I have been cruising for a bag with a chain. I ordered these to compare from Zara. Unfortunately they are all stunning and I haven’t brought myself to return any of them yet!

The last one is definitely staying – it’s slightly smaller than the other two but has the added versatility of a clutch as you can remove the long strap. It’s a fabulous price for real leather too. I used it to go to my regular Friday lunch alone that has now become one of the highlights of my week!

New earrings.

I’ve never been one to wear huge earrings. I am always envious of my friends who can carry off great chandelier earrings or statement necklaces. I always feel it’s just too much on me – I feel ‘over the top’ with large jewelry – except that is when it comes to rings and bracelets! Since having all my piercings done I’ve been wearing studs all the time. I’ve got so much going on in my ears it seems crazy to add more! However, I have grown tired of my studs and I was looking for something delicate and different – fine jewelry as opposed to costume jewelry – without the fine jewelry price.

I have been buying my nose rings from an Etsy store – they are fabulous low gauge and gold filled so no tarnishing. Karyn is based in BC, Canada and makes the jewelry herself. Recently I discovered that she also makes beautiful earrings that appeared to be exactly what I was looking for – and they were. They arrived quickly and are so delicate and light – I love wearing them. I got mine in rose gold filled to match other jewelry I have, but she will also make them in silver and yellow gold filled.

It’s back off to work now for me and then cheerleading practice with Poppy tonight, that’s after 3 hours of practice yesterday! It’s a good job she loves it!

Hot as Hell

Hot as Hell – not just in hot yoga this morning where I thought I might actually pass out, but also in Atlanta – anywhere in Atlanta. The humidity is such that you sweat as soon as you leave the house and the temperature is 94 degrees Fahrenheit.  I need no reminder that I live in the deep South.  We’re off to a pool party soon so I think some very icy white wine may be in order – it is Friday after all!

Summer orange

We’re dealing with one car right now. My car died a slow death over the weekend and, even though it has 100,000 miles on it now, we are trying to resuscitate it. I’d like it to keep going until the kids are fully capable of keeping a car free of candy wrappers and cheerios – then, and only then, will I take on a new one! One car in our house isn’t too bad. I work with my Husband so we get to ride together to and from work. We normally keep very different hours though, so it does mean some compromises. This morning worked out great as we even got to work out together at the gym before heading to the office. However, I think by Friday we will be thinking you can have too much of a good thing. I miss my independence (read ‘trips to the mall’).

I also tortured him by asking him to take my photo. He’s not keen at all. My tripod will never be redundant.

What girl doesn’t need new shoes?

In an attempt to reduce my shopping and stick to my monthly budget I have sworn off clothes ordering till I lose 20lbs.  Weight gain has been another unfortunate side effect of perimenopause – at least that’s what I am blaming it on!  So I am back on Jenny Craig for a while – the only diet that I have tried that works every time for me – though obviously keeping the pounds off is my failing.  Fortunately they welcome me back with open arms (as long as I open my check book) and I always find it easy to stick to the diet because I see results immediately.  It’s New York Fashion Week in a couple of weeks and I have been invited to a party where there will be lots of gorgeous, 20-something year old bloggers, so I need to feel confident and hot (and hopefully look it too!).  There is no better incentive to try and lose weight!

So no clothes – that obviously doesn’t mean no shoes or make-up!  I am just a little obsessed with footwear right now.

As you all know I adore the Vince Claire pumps.  Vince is becoming a brand that I am more and more attracted too – their clothes are casual yet elegant – and they now have a stand alone store here in Atlanta.  Well Vince have done it again for me with the Claire in new Fall colors.  Personally I am lusting over the ink suede.  They will be mine – but maybe not till November time when I can wear them with my grey leather trousers.  They also come in black cherry suede, black suede and umber suede.  I take between a US 8 and 8.5 and the 8 fits perfectly – a little narrow at first but they stretch to fit after a couple of wears.

Next up are these beauties from Sam Edelman – another favorite brand of mine for footwear.  The Sam Edelman Anastasia comes in burgundy, black and grey – and yes I want all three!

Finally there are some great deals on sneakers at J.Crew in their sale.  I am smitten by these New Balance and there is an extra 30% off the sale price right now (code SHOPSALE)!

So there you go – a clothes freeze doesn’t mean no shopping:)

Kool and the Gang

It’s 1.47am here and I am listening to BBC Radio 2 online.  Can you believe they just played Kool and the Gang “Joanna” – oh yes it is a sign…I’m tired, a little tipsy and a lot happy.  After an amazing dinner I am off to bed ready to begin my 44th year on Sunday!

Today started with a great hot yoga session, followed by an indulgent lunch out on my own, a scary storm, and then dinner at our favorite special restaurant.

Silver and grey.

I decided to work from home today – a lovely indulgence that allows me to get a few chores done at the same time.  I just had a break and nipped to Trader Joe’s to stock up on the wine for the celebrations this weekend!  As much as I want to throw on sweats and t-shirts when I’m working from home I still try to ‘get dressed’ – it makes me feel more accomplished for some reason.  Given the heat and humidity here right now I opted for a cool maxi dress from Asos.  You may recognize it as the grey version of this black one, and yes I have the khaki too…you know how I can’t resist multiple colors of an item if I love it!  The sandals are last year’s from Zara – I love metallics they are such a great neutral.
