An ode to Emmanuelle – again…

I have spent many evenings on Pinterest searching, pinning and ogling at her image…yes I think I could almost be classified as obsessed with her – ‘her’ being Emmanuelle Alt, the Editor of Vogue Paris. No matter how many times I see her image I just melt and think how easy she makes looking fabulous. She definitely has a formula but the pieces she wears are always simple and understated.

A jacket is a must – whether it be a fur, military style or simple blazer. Rarely seen in skirts she relies on ankle length jeans, harems and occasionally flares. Her shoes are always fabulous – simple courts, flat booties, over the knee boots or (currently what I am most obsessed by) lace or mesh booties – often peep toes. All paired with a simple tee or white shirt and a classic belt. Now why can’t I get it right?

Personally I think my love of clothes i.e. having too many clothes…means that I overcomplicate outfits, either to a) wear items that have been neglected or b) just by over-thinking an outfit. I have a substitute for everything she wears (no surprise), so my challenge over the next few weeks is to just take it easy, breathe, and relax, and then transform myself into an elegant, effortlessly stylish Parisian 😉

Oh and if anyone spots some wicked lace booties holler! These are the closest I’ve found…I love them, but they look super high for tottering across the Place de la Concorde.

Meanwhile back to reality here is what I have been wearing over the past couple of days. It’s blazing hot in Atlanta – how can it be 70 degrees on December 2nd? I’m not happy – a girl has furs and big coats to wear!

Thanksgiving

I had a lovely week with family and friends and I have overindulged. Our friends joined us for dinner on Thursday and I have to say I was pretty chuffed with how the turkey came out after brining overnight. Needless to say on Friday morning I felt like I had been soaked in a bath of salt and wine too, hence I didn’t get too involved or carried away with Black Friday 🙂 In fact I had several items in and out of my Zara cart all day and didn’t buy any of them. I did succumb and buy the Off Duty jumper in charcoal and navy from Boden. I have a couple from previous years and love them so with 30% off I bit the bullet. I can never have too many jumpers!

Some of my favorite stores do still have great discounts this weekend carrying into Cyber Monday:

J.Crew – use HOLIDAY for 30% off and 40% off sale items till 11/30

Mango – use 5BLACK2 in the US and 5BLACK4 in the UK till 11/30

GAP are still offering 40% off everything in the US using code GIFT

Boden have 30% off using code 3K3G at checkout in the US and N9H6 in the UK

AllSaints – 20% off till Monday with promo code CYBER

ASOS have 30% off everything using TGIBF

Back on Tuesday we went to the movies to watch Hero 6 which was really good fun – popcorn and an empty theater – fabulous. I wore my fur as it was pretty chilly here in Atlanta.

Poppy and Hugh were very excited to get out of the house! Poppy is all in H&M except her fabulous red boots which are Boden – she hasn’t taken them off since they arrived!

On Wednesday, once we had bought the 15lb turkey, we headed out for Mexican so we could prepare stuffing and cranberry sauce without feeling hungry!

Today was spent walking and running with the dogs – time to detox before Christmas so hopefully I can still fit in some of my party wear! I am insisting however that we don’t even discuss Christmas in our house till next week when we get the tree. I need a week between celebrations to reset!

On the same wavelength

Eve and I often send each other links and give each other advice on what to buy or not to buy (mainly the former!). We’re true enablers. We have very similar wardrobes – maybe because we have similar body types or just similar tastes. We have joked in the past how much more we could cram in our closets if we were close enough to share clothes. Yesterday we were each wearing our Mango culottes on different sides of the Atlantic.

Mango have another code right now too – purchase one item and get 30% off – purchase 2 or more items and get 40% off! Just use code 6DISCOUNT7 in the US and 6DISCOUNT in the UK. All sizes in the culottes are still available in the US!

You can click here to see Eve’s interpretation and here is mine – I was scared of chilly ankles 🙂

As Eve mentions they are incredibly comfortable and fit on the larger side for Mango – though their sizing is all over the place! These are a UK 12/US 8 and fit great especially on my waist where I sometimes struggle with waistbands being too tight!

I seem to have a thing for grey at the moment and I can’t get my hands on enough grey sweaters! My new love is the Everlane sleeveless chunky knit. Being sleeveless makes it easy to wear under jackets and it’s also dressier to wear with leather pants or skirts for a night out. The knit is so soft – I am obsessed. I dug out my old favorite Diesel Fayzas – the best jeans ever.

I’m hoping to go for a cheeky curry for lunch with my Husband today – it better be a hot one as our Polar Plunge arrives tomorrow 🙂 Just in time for my trip to Charlotte for a wedding bbbbrrrrr!

Oh and one last note – if you haven’t already then make sure you invest in the Urban Decay Naked palettes! Mine arrived and I LOVE them! Yes they are $50 – but you can buy 5 single shadows for that price and here you get a highly pigmented, non-dusty, easy to apply, long lasting eyeshadow palette with 12 colors. I am wearing the pinkier hues here from the Naked 3 palette.

25% off everything at Boden!

Now you all know I don’t buy nearly as much from Boden as I used to – Boden used to dominate my closet! I was the Queen of Boden tunics! These days I like to be a little more daring and eclectic. Having said that there are still items that I always turn to Boden for and now is the ideal time to do it with 25% off till Thursday midnight!

Here are my picks and a few things I’ll be stocking up on. First of all for my Husband – he LOVES their lounge pants and all I can say is, given how fussy he is with clothes, they must be fabulous! They’d make perfect a Xmas present.

14MAUT_MC348_GRY_W01

Now for me. I find Boden’s Cashmere to be some of the best on the market. Far superior to J.Crew. It never bobbles and I wash all mine on the wool cycle in the machine with no shrinkage. I have a cashmere hoody from last year but absolutely love this cashmere lounge sweater – I adore the neckline. Again a perfect Xmas present.

14WWIN_BK015_NAV_W01I’m wearing my Westbourne jumper today. It’s one of my all time Boden favorites and I have it in black and grey. I am particularly loving the brighter colors that it is now available in.

14WWIN_WK999_PBL_W01

This toasty roll neck is a bit of a curve ball – especially in this colorway. I have ordered it – I LOVE the yellow – it makes it far more wearable for me that the yellow is away from my face.

14WWIN_WK997_PBL_W01

I am smitten with the Skye scarf in yellow. I have ordered a couple of yellow scarves this season and returned them as the yellow has been to bleurgh – this looks perfect fingers crossed! I absolutely love the pink in it too!

Poppy will be glad to hear that I managed to order her red boots. She’s been hounding me for these for weeks!

As for what I’ve been wearing well Saturday was definitely a comfy day at home nursing a little hangover after our night out.

Date night

My Husband and I cheered with relief once Halloween was done with last week. It’s safe to say neither of us enjoy the trick or treating much – maybe because we never did it as children in England so there is no nostalgia for us. Our children, however, love it and had a fabulous night, but for us it just meant we could now look forward to our night out belatedly celebrating my Husband’s birthday!

Before heading out I was in desperate need of a haircut – short hair always feels like it grows 20x faster! I headed to the salon on Thursday wearing this outfit designed for comfort and warmth. We have an Arctic chill arriving this week – I cannot wait…not.

IMG_9902Jacket – Mango // Jeans – Zara // Cashmere tunic – Everlane // Boots – H&M Isabel Marant (old)

I’m thrilled with my hair – a super short undercut and I have gone black for the winter – you know how I like to make a statement. I’m continuing to experiment with my makeup to keep the look feminine and I’m having fun with it! The best thing is my Husband loves it – it really is great to have his support when I try new looks! Last night we headed to our regular joint to finally celebrate his birthday and we had an amazing night as always. Great food, great service and amazing company – I am sometimes surprised that after 23 years we can still laugh at each other’s jokes (and our own for that matter) and scintillate with our conversation 😉

A little worse for wear today so I spent it holding the sofa down watching football and movies – a perfect Fall Saturday!

Pink and gray/grey!

Grey is a word I have terrible trouble with these days – American spelling or British spelling? It seems everyone in my family struggles with American English at times. My son demonstrated his Southern accent yesterday. He is pupil of the week in class and had to write a sentence beginning with “I feel…” to articulate his emotions on being selected. I checked his work afterwards and he had written “I feel people’s buckets with water”. Yes that’s right – he read it as ‘fill’ because as a true Southerner he ‘fee-yils’ things up. Just like Poppy brushes her ‘hay-yer’.

It’s election day here in the US today and I’m ready to vote. It’s also bloody freezing so I have the big guns out for the first time this year – my new Mango coat. I took inspiration from Pinterest for my outfit. Nothing more relaxing on a Monday evening than surfing Pinterest and catching up on Homeland while the Husband watches Monday Night Football!

Here’s my winter version of how to wear pink trousers. These are the J.Crew wool joggers and they are fabulous – I can’t wait to wear them with my Vince Claires in the evening. They fit big and these are a US 6.

Yesterday I was in culottes – I just flipping love these from Marks and Spencers! Less than £30 too! I am in a UK 12 medium length and they fit beautifully.

Happy Birthday!

I love my friends but they sure can be a bad influence. Sue has introduced me to Everlane. Ironic as they don’t ship to the UK yet (except via me for Sue!). They are online only, with plans to ship internationally next year, and because they have no bricks and mortar their focus is on cutting costs for the consumer while providing incredible quality – which they do. I am a huge fan of their sweatshirts and cashmere.

Their short sleeve sweatshirt in particular is fabulous – a great boxy cut – and I think quite generous in size. They claim a medium is a US 4-6 but mediums fit me great I am definitely a US 8 on top. It comes in grey, black, navy and vanilla.

Their cashmere is divine and a great price. I love their slouchy v-neck and now have 2 of them – the black will be on it’s way to me soon I hope! It’s beautifully cut with a longer back and plenty of drape. Again I am in a medium.

PSA – Mango 30% off again!

So you missed out last time – well never fear Mango are offering another whopping 30% off all weekend using code 5WEEKEND3 in the USA and 5WEEKEND in the UK. Here’s my new jacket from there that I just adore – another slightly 80s influenced look 🙂 I’m wearing a UK Medium/US Small.

I’ve just cleansed with hot yoga and now I’m off for lunch before pumpkin carving with two six year old boys later! Another fun Friday!

Leather and loafers

I’ve always had a thing for real leather jackets. I got my first on a day trip with my Mum and Dad in Chester. It was a gorgeous cream blouson jacket from Lakeside Leather and I was thrilled with it. I couldn’t wait to wear it and went out on my bike in it, promptly falling off – no damage to the jacket thankfully – only my pride! A few years later I got a bat wing black leather jacket (it was the 80s) from Whittaker’s department store in Bolton. It cost a fortune (well for then) and it was a birthday present. After several warnings from Mum and Dad about not leaving it anywhere I wore it to a party and threw it on the bed with everyone else’s coats. Needless to say at the end of the evening it wasn’t there, my Dad picked me up and we had to report it stolen a the local Police station. It still bothers me that someone I knew nicked it from that party!

So not a great history with my leather jackets of old – and maybe to make up for that disappointment I now own several – a couple of AllSaints biker jackets that I was fortunate to get in the sales, a couple of Mango leather bomber jackets, a Zara leather jacket cut similar to a denim jacket from this season, and my red Zara leather jacket from a couple of years ago. AllSaints’ sales are definitely worth waiting for – their leather is incredible, heavy and soft and will last years. Mango have the best high street leather that I have found – really soft and not thin.

Here are two of my current favorites that I have worn over the past couple of days.

A little bit retro

When you write a blog you tend to read a lot of blog posts too. From frequently reading style, fashion, street style blogs etc. it is fairly easy to garner great advice on what should work or shouldn’t work for your body type – assuming of course you know what body type you are!

My body has been described as apple, triangular and most recently rectangular. All I know is I have quite a small frame but bulk up around the face, chest and arms fastest when gaining weight, yet I can comfortably fit into a US 6 jean if the waistband has some stretch – I have no hips or backside to speak of. So whatever shape category I fall into I know that I need to be careful up top and enhance down below. Sometimes however a garment comes along that I know I should not touch with a barge pole, but somehow I just can’t resist it.

Meet my ‘masculine style’ Mango jacket:

Mango jacket

It’s worn over a cardigan here but the silhouette is basically cocoon. It has dropped shoulders and is oversized – I have a Eur Medium which works as I will be able to wear it over sweaters. It is so 80s retro I adore it – names like Limahl, Simon Le Bon and Spandau Ballet have all been associated with this jacket. If you’ve been following my blog for a while you’ll be no stranger to my passion for the 80s. This jacket is so evocative of that glorious decade that I couldn’t return it, even though it breaks all my personal ‘shape rules’. Once in a while we have to wear something purely because we love it.
