A night out with MommyEnnui.com

After a failed attempt to get out for lunch on Friday, we thankfully made it out on Saturday night.  We had a marvelous night at a local restaurant with MommyEnnui.com and her Husband.  We have known each other for a while but our friendship has blossomed recently, and they mean the world to me.  There are some people in life (few and far between unfortunately) who you know just love you for being you – warts and all; don’t judge – or if they do you debate it face-to-face; can laugh at themselves – and if they laugh at you you laugh right along too; and have true joie de vivre – but are happy to also admit it ain’t all perfect.  We live in a bubble here in Atlanta where the houses are perfect, moms and their perky pony tails work out daily, and the children are smocked and monogrammed – so spending time with ‘normal’ people is cherished.  We laughed all evening and I tried more vegetarian dishes than I ever thought possible:)  Here’s to next time.

15 years of sh*ts and giggles.

15 years ago today I walked into a hotel room filled with fabulous friends and family to marry the man I still love and adore today.  No one makes me giggle like he does, or challenges me intellectually like he does, or makes me feel as sexy as he does.  We started married life as we continue it today – setting out to laugh often and fight rarely, take risks and avoid ruts, respect and not take for granted.  Love you honey.

Wedding photos

Two of these photos are our first dance to “Love Me Tender” – the other two are when we cleared the dance floor to “Satisfaction” – easy to spot which is which:)

In the excitement of the day I still haven’t decided what to wear tonight.  It will probably be dictated by a loose waistband as we are having a fancy five course dinner with wine.  Stay tuned on instagram for updates!

My outfits over the past couple of days have been dictated by the cooler weather here.  It is perfectly autumnal in Atlanta at last!

A little bit of sparkle.

At the gym this morning, while I was dropping the children off at the play room, I realized that I must have missed the memo.  The memo regarding the new required summer outfit for the gym – white frilly tennis skirt, pink visor, perky blonde pony tail, and phony smile.  Oh and can you tell me where to find the perfect children with their page boy hair cuts and monogrammed smocks?  I think I must have become a little cynical while on vacation.  I felt like I was in the middle of The Stepford Wives, or surrounded by multiple versions of Patty Simcox.  I love Atlanta, but sometimes I feel like I stick out like a sore thumb.

So what better to do than embrace my non-conformity and wear my shortest shorts and sparkliest sneakers:)  I do cringe a little every time I put on my Zara skort.  Nearly every ‘style’ blogger on the planet has a pair and all of them are 20 years younger than me.  But you know what – Patty down the road doesn’t know where they are from, or that all the street style bloggers are wearing them, so I’ll wear them with aplomb in Atlanta and not worry about it.  Though, for a split second, it did occur to me that it might be a sub-concious desire to conform – in white they do look a little like a tennis skirt.

Zara skort

Skort – Zara // Sneakers – Lame Supergas // Top – Boden Sparkle top (just $23.40!)

I adore the Boden sparkle top – it is perfect – light, and a great shape – an absolute bargain for $23.40 – I have the ivory too.  This is a US 8 – I think a US 6 would have been fine too but I like my knitwear a little looser.

For the sake of full disclosure – here’s what I lived in over the weekend.  Sweatpants with no red lipstick in sight.

A graduation and buying wedding rings!

It was Hugh’s Pre-K graduation yesterday.  I shed a couple of tears of pride.  Where have the past 5 years gone?  It’s a cliché, but true, your children grow up so fast.

The lady with the red trousers is Shirley.  She adores Hugh – she cared for him in the baby room at the daycare and now babysits for us.  I was so touched that she came to see him graduate.

We arrived home just in time to meet Karin and Simon, our friends from Sweden.  They are visiting for the weekend.  It’s a year since Simon proposed to Karin here in Atlanta, so this visit we get to chat about wedding plans and we’re off to choose wedding rings today!!  Well rather they are off to choose them – but you know how I like to be involved and share my opinion.  Fortunately Simon has known me for 23 years so has probably learned to accept/tolerate my interference by now:)  I hope to share photos of the selected rings later.  In the meantime my Husband kindly advised me to avoid wearing turquoise – apparently it could be interpreted as me trying to wear the store’s signature blue.

Any changes of heart yet?

It’s been a while since I last wore them and you’ve had the chance to consider…any changes of heart?  Anyone now tempted?  Oh well I’ll keep trying – I love them:)

We have the best weather of the year so far here in Atlanta – it’s ‘cracking the flags’ as my Nan used to say.

Another wish list.

I am a complete brand obsessive – meaning once I find a brand I love I can never have enough.  I am currently obsessed with J.Crew, Boden, Zara, Rag & Bone, Hudson Jeans and of course AllSaints.  I tend to go through stages with each where I am totally lusting over everything on their website.  It’s an eclectic mix, it has to be said, but oddly enough it all seems to mesh together quite well in the closet, and can be mixed appropriately for various occasions.

I’m currently obsessing over EVERYTHING on the AllSaints website.  Their new collection is perfection.  I have managed to stay away for a while but my cart is now up to $1500.  It is a wish list of sorts.  I certainly won’t be ordering all of it, but right now I have no idea how to cull it.  I WANT IT ALL.

First I HAVE to have this Kayo sweater dress – with a silk body it is just divine.  I’d wear this with leggings or bare legs in the Spring with my Newbury boots.

Next the Sago sweater dress in black – I just love the drape and the open shoulder.  Again perfect with skinnies or leggings and ankle boots.

WK228C-33-1

For summer I would live in the Camille jersey dress and Venice tee dress.  Both perfectly versatile for the hot Atlanta summer – I love the grey in both – perfect with sunkissed legs.

Finally I have a casual wedding to attend in Stockholm in August and I plan to be wearing this.  I just adore it – it’s only available on the UK site right now – the Mono Riviera dress.  This print is amazing.

WD176C-250-1

There is more in my cart – the Kayo dress and the Oran top, for example.  It seriously is one of the best collections of clothes I’ve seen from AllSaints.  I’m smitten.  I’ll let you know what I order after I’ve nipped to Bloomingdale’s to see my friends at the AllSaints concession there:)

Here’s today’s outfit.  The Zara tartan crops which, be warned, are VERY slim fitting, worn with the AllSaints Char jumper (in honor of my current obsession), with the Zara court shoes.

A new obsession.

So I like to work out.  I also like to ‘dress the part’ and ‘look cute’ while working out – if possible when sweating buckets, huffing and puffing and as red as a beetroot – I don’t do ‘low impact’.  My favorite brand of work out gear for some time has been Lululemon.  They do fabulous fabrics for wicking and support, great colors, cute prints, and I LOVE their skorts.  Over the past few months though there has been some concern over their colors ‘bleeding’ in the wash.  There have been LOTS of comments on their FB page and their CEO even addressed quality issues.  I have noticed the trim on a couple of my beloved skorts that have changed color:(  Now I’m not ready to abandon Lululemon, but the quality concerns and their more mainstream presence i.e. seeing everyone in the same gear, has made me question whether the extra cost is worth it at all.

So I ventured out the other day to Atlantic Station to investigate the Athleta store.  I always receive their catalog and to be honest haven’t paid it much attention till now.  Flicking through it, what really appeals to me is the variety of clothing they offer – not just capris and tanks for gym wear – but they also have – dare I say it – ‘lounge wear’ and ‘travel attire’.  Don’t shoot me, but here is why I love it.  Sometimes I do just want to hang out at home in sweats – BUT not sweats that have a brand emblazoned across my butt, or elsewhere for that matter.  I still want to look cute in my, here we go again, ‘lounge wear’.  As for traveling – there is nothing worse than sitting on a 9hr transatlantic flight in skinny jeans, no matter how stretchy they are.  But I refuse to wear sweatpants and Uggs.  Plus on my trips abroad – especially for summer vacation I love to have something easy to throw on that can be packed rolled up, and will not reach it’s destination completely creased.

They don’t have too many bricks and mortar stores right now (though owned by Gap I expect real estate will be no problem, and they seem to be popping up stores where ever there is a Lululemon close by!).  The one here at Atlantic Station is HUGE.  It is beautifully merchandised, has great spacious changing rooms, and the staff are fabulous.  Nothing was too much trouble.  No pretentious yogis here.

These Allegro pants were what I really wanted to try.  They are super light weight, have a great stretchy waistband and I walked away with a black pair.  Ideal for travel and at home.  I love them.  As a note I got in a US 4 bottoms and size small tops so I suggest they fit on the larger side!

I also love these capri skorts – the ‘seamless skirts got legs‘ –  and will be trying them as soon as they are in store.

Their dresses are also great – especially for hot Atlanta summers and for summer vacations.  I have my eye on this ‘Twist and Turn maxi‘ for Cyprus this summer.

cn5890089

On another note – my paranoia about the sun is growing annually.  I’ve heard too many horrifically sad stories recently and so I plan to be more guarded on the beach.  I have completely fallen in love with their rashguards.  Perfect protection, and also pretty darned cute too!

cn4449723

As for today, well it seems a long way to go till beach weather that’s for certain.  I’m wearing the Boden velvet trim blazer from 2011, Boden Must Have Jumper in blackberry layered over an H&M tank, Hudson skinnies and my Newburys.  The scarf is also Boden from 2011.

Boden are currently having a Spring Trim – 15% off selected items – and this stacks when you use my banner ads!  Enjoy:)

Hmmm, shouldn’t have worn ballet flats.

My feet are FREEZING.  After 74 degrees temps last weekend we now have the threat of snow on the way tonight.  Not quite as much as you are all experiencing on the other side of the Atlantic (my friend in St. Tropez even shared snaps of snow on palm trees) – but enough to send Atlanta into a frenzy of panic buying bread and milk, and rushing to get home before the roads get bad.  We are absolutely unprepared for snow and ice here.  Two years ago, at this time of year, we were housebound for a week due to an ice storm.  There were no gritters (not sure they’re called that here – but trucks that spread salt) available to salt any of the minor roads, plus the power kept going out due to branches falling from the weight of the ice.  Nightmare.  Fingers crossed it won’t be anywhere near that bad tonight.  Anyway I have panic bought wine and have enough to last at least a couple of days if needed.  Sorted.

Tired of jeans this week I chose my harem trousers from Zara (similar here).  I’m wearing them with a Zara animal print t-shirt and the lovely Boden Must have jumper – of which there are still several in the clearance section.  I love the simple silhouette of this jumper and the button detail on the shoulders is really cute.  Unsurprisingly this isn’t the only one I own.  The shoes are Tory Burch Revas in mouse (old) – whatever possessed me not to wear socks and boots!?

Oh I am in desperate need of a haircut too, not to mention the state of my brows, so I better had be able to get to my appointment in the morning!  Keep warm and dry where ever you are!

Festive red – and a t.v. interview!!!!

I finally feel like the Holidays have started.  Poppy is off school for two and a half weeks – oh joy – and that’s not sarcastic either!  With the school day normally starting at 5.45am, ready to leave the house at 7am, it is bliss having an extra hour or so in bed.  It’s a girls day today as Hugh is still at pre-K and MM is working till lunch tomorrow.  Unfortunately it is also absolutely chucking it down with rain outside so activities have been curtailed and we are snuggling in front of Christmas movies all afternoon.  I’m wondering when it is appropriate to crack open a bottle of wine?

I’m feeling quite proud of myself at the today.  After gaining some weight through lack of running, I’ve managed to lose 10lbs in 4 weeks with some healthy eating and working out daily.  I’m taking bets how long it will take to regain them over the Christmas week – 2 – 3 days maybe?  Especially after a trip to Trader Joe’s where I have stocked up on cheap plonk, Christmas cookies and cheesecake…”all in moderation” must be my mantra for the next couple of weeks:)

INTERRUPTION ALERT!  As I was sitting here typing, and contemplating the wine, there was a knock at the door – dogs go ballistic etc…I open with trepidation wondering who on earth is stopping by on a wet Thursday afternoon…go on guess who – I bet you can’t…

…it was Aaron Diamant…you know him…?  No?  Not native to Atlanta?  Well he is a lovely investigative reporter from Channel 2 Action News!  Oh yes he had heard all about my blog and wanted to interview me for a huge national t.v. feature.  NOT.  Less than glamorous – he wanted to interview me about the sewage leak that occurred behind our house last spring.  THANK GOD I was dressed and had make-up on!  I will be on the evening news in a ‘set up’ piece apparently about the City being fined for taking so long to identify the problem.  Unfortunately I didn’t have chance to check for bogeys or food between my teeth so apologies if they are highlighted on HD.  Hopefully I hid all evidence of our sinful lifestyle from the camera – of all places they wanted to film with the kitchen behind me!! Thank goodness MM keeps it spotless!

Phew excitement over – must get that bottle of wine now…

So here’s what I will now refer to as my ‘t.v. outfit’.  I am wearing the Boden smocked tunic dress with Boden tights (sold out) and the VInce Camuto Autumn wedge boots.

IMG_3653 IMG_3640

I then added the Boden jersey scarf from the sale last summer.

IMG_3658

Finally before Poppy and I headed to the library this morning I popped on my fabulous Boden red Iona coat – just $135.80 now in the sale.  I have the black too and adore them – great for just throwing on when you don’t want bulk or a heavy coat.

IMG_3679 IMG_3675

So look out tonight for a mad English bird talking about stinky sewage on Channel 2 Action News – Coverage that you can count on – I expect they’ll be hiring me soon to be their evening news anchor.

‘Tis the season for competition.

Every year we add to the list of our Family Traditions at Christmas.  In recent years a tradition that has become more and more popular, is to head out for a drive after dark and take a look at all the wonderful National Lampoon style Christmas lights that adorn the houses around Atlanta.  It’s a bit like our version of the Blackpool Illuminations that Mum and Dad used to take us to see years ago:)  This year it seems our neighborhood has significantly upped their game.  A little friendly neighborly competition maybe?  There are Antebellum columns wrapped as candy canes, herds of deer lit up, and several Santa legs sticking out of chimneys.  One of the easiest (if you don’t mind heights) to set up, and most fun was spotted this morning on our school run – I was in the line for the lights – don’t worry no hands free driving here…just so Santa knows where to go…

It was time for my indulgent morning at the salon again today.  Five weeks comes around quickly – one of the drawbacks, or welcome pleasures, of short hair – depending on whether you focus on the money you part with, or on the relaxing pampering that you receive.

I wore my Zara leopard print khaki pants and khaki chunky sweater (not found online), with a long line H&M black vest dress layered underneath.  The boots are my fabulous Newburys and the scarf is also H&M.

Given how much time I spend on the Zara website it is no surprise that the inspiration for today’s haircut came from their TRF Lookbook.  I just think this girl looks stunning.  Her boyish cut really appeals to me and given how difficult the red is to maintain I shared this image with both my colorist and hairdresser.

Unfortunately they were not able to provide me with her stunning, gamine features but I’m pretty pleased with the cut and color.  Very happy in fact.

Now time to celebrate the new haircut with a glass of plonk.  Happy weekend y’all!
