My new favorite beauty brand.

As you know I’ve always been a fan of drugstore brands when it comes to beauty.  Why spend money on creams and potions when you can spend it on clothes?  For years I’ve used brands like Olay and Boots No.7 which I’ve been lucky enough to track down over here at Target.  However, since well and truly landing in my 40s I’ve found I have been tempted by more ‘hardcore’ products that claim to do all sorts of fabulous things to ‘aging’ skin.  I still haven’t been lured to spend a fortune, though MM did buy me a pot of La Mer as part of my 40th celebrations – oh how we laughed.  I used it for a bit and ended up giving it to him to finish as it was just so thick and stodgy – I like a fluid type consistency that is immediately absorbed.  Anyhow, after conversations with Avril, I also learned that some of my drugstore favorites may not be as effective as I’d hoped, based on the number of chemical ingredients etc. they have.  While questioning their efficacy, this is where my interest in organic beauty products began – yes it’s that granola effect creeping in again…:)

So a couple of weeks ago while doing the weekly shop in Whole Foods I decided to take a peek down their beauty aisle.  It was quite overwhelming with a huge range of price points – lots of products claiming to be all natural.  How on earth do I make a choice as to what to try?  Well the following criteria were important to me:

1. Price – I like to use my products – and not use sparingly worrying about how much each scoop or blob is costing me – the price has to be reasonable.

2. Claims – will they do what I need them to do – mainly reduce wrinkles, even out tone and texture and firm my scarily sagging neck.  And do they have reviews that can back up some of their claims?

3. Green – how environmentally friendly are the products, and is the company on the search for greater good?  If I’m going organic I might as well go the whole hog.

As I perused the shelf one brand jumped out at me based on price and the prettiness of their packaging – Acure.  Without knowing anything about them, except for what I read on the packages, I walked away with a pot of Line Eraser ($19.99), radical wrinkle complex ($29.99) and the seriously firming facial serum ($22.99).  As long as they all did what they say on the tin I’d be in a good place!

Once home I read their comprehensive website and I was thrilled to learn their ‘mission‘ –  “to provide healthy skin care products using the purest Organic and Fair Trade Certified ingredients in order to help raise money in the fight against breast cancer. For each facial care product sold, we donate 5 percent of out after tax profit to Bright Pink.”

Having used all 3 products for a few weeks now I am very happy with the results.  I use the radical wrinkle complex daily as my daily moisturizer and my skin is so much softer.  I’ve been using the firming serum as a night treatment, and though firmness is hard to measure, the skin on my neck certainly looks more even.  Having decided to stick with these products I wanted to investigate more of the Acure range.

Acure sent me the following to try – all of which have now become part of my regular beauty regimen:

1. Marula Oil ($15.99) – I alternate this with the firming serum at night.  It diminishes scars and blemishes and can also be used on your hair.  It is absorbed really quickly and you don’t need a lot at all – I rub it all over my neck, face and décolletage.

2. Coconut pumpkin bodywash ($9.99) – the smell of this is incredible – I started using this on vacation and by the beach it was perfect.  It creates a really rich creamy lather – great for skin that has been in the sun – and mmmm that scent is just divine!

3. Sunscreen SPF 30 – I use this everyday on my face with the radical wrinkle complex.  It is really light and non greasy.  I’ve used it under make-up too with no problems.

4. Brightening facial scrub ($14.99) – this is a bit scary looking the first time you use it – it’s green as it contains sea kelp and chlorella growth factor – but I assure you it is divine to use.  It is exfoliating and yet doesn’t feel too abrasive – it is great for washing the day away.  Of all the products that Acure were kind enough to send to me to try this is my absolute favorite.

So I am now a loyal Acure user and advocate – and I can sneak in a new item every time I buy a gallon of milk:)  If you are in the US you can also buy online on their site and I even found a few coupon codes after googling.  Unfortunately they are not available on shelves outside the US at the moment but I’m sure they will be soon – you can make requests via their Facebook page here.  For now you can buy internationally via www.iherb.com and www.spiritbeautylounge.com.

This is not a sponsored post, though some items were provided courtesy of Acure.

We are beautiful.

My spin instructor had me tearing up this morning.  Not because of the pain she inflicts on us each week (lovely lady but turns psycho on a spin bike), but it was all down to her little motivational speech half way through the class.  My endorphins were flowing but she also touched a nerve.

She told us about the following Dove ‘Real Beauty’ campaign.  A forensic artist sketched a handful of women based on their descriptions of themselves, and then again based on the description of others.  The results are startling.  In each pair the sketches are completely different to each other. Those created when the women described themselves are far less flattering than those created with the help of others.

Why are we so hard on ourselves?  I know many people think bloggers like myself must be full of confidence and that we must be incredibly vain to post photos of ourselves all over the internet every day.  But you know what – sometimes the opposite is true.  We all have our own hang ups and stuff hidden under the hood/bonnet that we don’t always share with others.  Maybe if we listened to, and accepted, other people’s complements more often we may see ourselves in a truer light.  As Jennifer told us this morning we are all ‘beautiful, strong women’.  Remember that the next time you criticize yourself in front of the mirror.  We are beautiful no matter what we say.

Watching this video even brings me to tears – but I cry when I hear bagpipes and brass bands too:)

Bracing myself…

…for the comments!  The dungarees have entertained several already today.  As I walked into the office MM thought it was hilarious when he showed me where the plumbing was under the sink – in fact he’s just walked out telling me the ‘chickens need feeding’…oh my sides are splitting – what a funny guy.

After Fiona ‘outed’ me a week or so ago I knew I couldn’t wait much longer before giving them their first public appearance.  To clarify – I LOVE them.  I know they’ve been featured on several blogs, and they have been the subject of many fashion articles recently, but I will say I was wearing them way back in 1998 – that’s how ahead of the trend I am:)  I wore a short pair all through my honeymoon in Cyprus – dead sexy!  Aside from being totally on trend right now, I find them super comfortable – jeans with no waistband – perfect!

Will you or won’t you dungaree this summer?

…And for those doubters out there I discovered they are great for keeping hands warm…

And just for Fiona and MM, here I am ready for tractor racing – remind me not to stand like this at the bar – or anywhere in public for that matter:

Wooo hhooo – I’m thrilled to have been featured in the Bury Times this week (page 9)!!! And almost a full page:)

You can’t beat jeans and a jacket.

I don’t know why I don’t just stick to this simple formula:

jeans + jacket = comfort + confidence

Regardless of the type of jeans – and I have all styles from bell bottoms to skinnies, nothing beats the simplicity of just adding a t-shirt and jacket to provide a relaxed yet pulled together look.  I should remember this every day when I get dressed.  I have a passion for loud, colorful trousers, as you all know, but jeans are my true love and I should never forget that.

Wearing these 501s is so nostalgic for me – they elicit all kinds of emotions when I put them on.  Even though these are newish they take me back to the late 80’s when I would borrow a friend’s pair that were perfectly worn and ripped (I think they were Sara’s that she had ‘borrowed’ off her boyfriend?).  Tightened around the waist with a big leather belt, that needed extra holes back then, I would wear them nearly every weekend in the summer of ’88.  I thought I looked the dogs b*ll*cks in them.  I even remember the green bat wing t-shirt I used to like to wear with them, and I still wear YSL Paris perfume that was my favorite back then.  I can see us all now – Bury Grammar Sixth Form – in our weekend common room at The Hare & Hounds.

Some sale wants.

I don’t remember Boden ever putting their Spring items in the clearance section before June in previous years?  Maybe I’m mistaken, but this year they seem to be dropping odd items in throughout the season.  I just happened to be browsing yesterday and found myself lusting after 3 fabulous spring coats.  This is when I so wish I was back in the UK and actually had use for spring coats.  It’s 80 degrees here this week so it appears summer has arrived for 2013.  MM did suggest that they would be great coats for Fall and even Winter here – surely that means he agrees with me and I should purchase immediately?

I will preface this with the fact that 2 of these coats got some poor reviews.  However, seeing as I am not the ‘typical’ Boden buyer I tend to take the reviews with a grain of salt.  For me the truth always lies in trying the clothes at home, and styling them how I would wear them.  I think all 3 of these coats would look fabulous dressed up or down.  I can see myself wearing them with boyfriend jeans, a white t-shirt and flats, keeping them simple and casual.

The first is the swishy coatigan.  The fabric (as the reviews confirm) looks nothing like a coatigan – I think this is definitely more of a lightweight coat.  I want it in parchment which is currently reduced by $60.

12WWIN_WE376_LBR_M01

The next is the Canonbury coat.  I’ve had my eye on this for a while.  I think it looks stunning in the iris.  Again it would look amazing with just jeans and a t-shirt to really sharpen up a casual outfit.  The iris is only reduced by $30 right now but the other two colorways are reduced further.  The reviews are pretty dire regarding fit, but I really want to try this and see – dare I say it – but it may just be too much of a departure for some stalwart Boden customers.

12WWIN_WE380_PRP_M01

Finally I absolutely adore this red version of the Spring trench.  It is SO me and would make such a statement.  This one I might just have to order for Fall.  The red version is currently reduced by $60.

12WWIN_WE389_RED

What do you think?  Have any of you tried them?  If so do the reviews do them justice?

Today it is back to normality.  The final days of the vacation were amazing.  The children and I did some dancing on the deck while Dad prepared the grill:)

I love this photo of Poppy at dusk looking out to the rigs.  I know the thought of oil rigs to many of you may be far from romantic – but I assure you when you see them all twinkling at night it is an amazing sight to behold.  Now I sound like I’m about to break out into a Toby Keith song.

IMG_5279

My final vacation outfit was of course a bikini – but sparing you that photo – here is one of me in the Zara dress that I used as my beach cover up.  I love it – it is really comfortable and light weight.  As you can see the house we stayed in was very ‘retro’:)

IMG_3619

Yesterday we were all tired and fortunately had a birthday party to attend which got us up and out of the house.  It was very odd getting ‘dressed’ again and wearing make-up – I even wore a necklace (inspired by Fiona’s post).  Not sure about this get up though – I think this is a bit of a failure – maybe trying too hard?

Withdrawal.

I’ve gone cold turkey.  No not with the wine silly!  I haven’t bought anything, or clicked an order button for a whole week.  I’m not sure when this last happened.  I have, however, filled several carts with things I ‘need’.  It’s actually quite fun to keep checking them and looking at them knowing at anytime I could hit the order button if I want to – I’m teasing myself;)

Yesterday we had an afternoon of severe storms so I had some time to surf online, as you can be sure we were going no where near the surf outside.  The storms were pretty darn scary, with Tornado watches – and being in a wooden shack on stilts did not feel the safest place to be.  At one point we tried to drive away from the storms but quickly realized the whole of the Alabama coast was impacted.  I felt too much like a ‘storm chaser’ guy on The Weather Channel, so we turned around and hunkered down.  I calmed my nerves with a strong margarita and distracted myself with some online window shopping – no one else in the family seemed to be that worried as plastic furniture went hurtling past the windows.

So what did I drop in my carts?  Well first of all hooray for Zara – lots of new items have appeared, along with a new model who is a bit more engaging than the previous ones this season.

This green jacket is just stunning – it looks fabulous in this fabric.

Green Jacket

One item I know I NEED is a lovely longish lace dress – why?  Well I don’t have anything like this already.  I can see it worn with converse, thong sandals, flip flops or even my Dicker boots – very versatile for any occasion.  I just wish it wasn’t $159.

Lace dress

Of course there is another pair of patterned trousers that I love – this bird print pair are beautiful and will be perfect paired with a simple t-shirt.

bird trousers

Another pair of shoes perfect for my feet, yet still enough like sandals to be summery are these peep toe booties.  They’d look fabulous with dressy shorts like these, or skinnies of course.

peep toe boots

One item that will definitely be winging it’s way to me is this white jacket – once I can summon the strength to click order:)  Also I am not sure whether an XL here is really the usual TRF L – I ALWAYS need a large in TRF jackets.  I seem to be obsessed with biker style jackets this season.

white biker jacket

One of my favorite stores – AllSaints – is having a sale right now on selected items.  I adored this Kayo Sweater dress as soon as I saw it at the start of the season.  The cobalt is now in the sale and I’m thinking this gorgeous color will be a welcome change from my AllSaints’ greys and blacks currently in my closet.

Kayo

Finally Asos.com has become another ‘go-to’ site for me.  I find it a little overwhelming navigating all their items – the same reason that I don’t really like department stores – but it’s so exciting to see all the UK brands I can get my hands on in one place, with free shipping and free returns.  Whistles, Oasis, River Island and some lesser known brands are all available.  Not to mention Asos’ own brand.  For less than $60 these loose Saxby boyfriend jeans are a steal – a great substitute for the Current/Elliott Dad jeans.

Saxby

I also have a weak spot for this dress – I just wish it was short sleeved for the summer here.

Not sure how much longer I am going to go before caving.  I wonder if I can make it another week?

Beach vacation.

This place is amazing.  It’s one of those vacations where everything falls in to place, almost.

The kids have been jumping the surf at 8am each morning, and MM and I have managed to get a couple of beach runs in to burn off the calories from the excesses of each evening.  Yes, we’ve even managed to light the charcoal grill:)  Nothing better than burgers with Prosecco!

IMG_5226

My afternoon margaritas have been cunningly disguised in my coffee cup.

IMG_5216

The house, fortunately, is perfect – basic, but right on the beach.  It’s amazing how easy the day becomes when you don’t have to pack bags and food for a day at the beach.  Not to mention we can all chill out away from the sun when we feel like it.  The only thing we’re missing are the dogs – they don’t deal well with the heat – I hope they are behaving for the house sitter!

IMG_5228

I’ve been relishing living in bikinis, shorts and t-shirts.  I packed light, and living with a capsule wardrobe is fabulously freeing.  No decisions to make except choosing which shorts are clean.

Of course we can never go away without drama.  Poor Poppy managed to get half the deck in her foot on Sunday evening.  I tried removing the splinter but she was obviously in pain.  Monday morning we headed to Urgent Care.  The poor wee thing had to have a huge needle in her foot for anesthetic then the Dr. had to use a scalpel to remove it – it was embedded in her foot so deeply!  I held on to her for dear life – I never want to hear screams of pain like that again.  I was in tears and shaking – and I wasn’t even going through the pain!!  She was an absolute star and once it was all over all she was concerned about was the color of her bandage.  I think she is feeling quite the hero now.

Bikini ready.

I’m just starting to feel human again.  Those bus stop ladies are quite a riot when you get them in a bar around a bottle (or several) of white wine.  Thursday was tough going but it was worth it.  I love these ladies!

IMG_3576

The leggings I wore are new and a real steal from Nordstrom.  It is great being able to purchase TopShop items here now thanks to their partnership with Nordstrom.  They were an impulse purchase after seeing them on Martha’s post the other week.

There is nothing like the thought of wearing a bikini for motivating me to hit the gym.  So yesterday I went to spin – it was amazing – a great endorphin rush in a lovely quiet class!  I hope it is the same this morning – yes I am motivated:)

IMG_3580 IMG_3578

After spin I was running around like a crazy woman doing last minute errands for the trip – wine was bought, packing was done and finally the Brazillian was accomplished – TMI I know, but I find they are essential when you’re in a swimsuit 9 months of the year.  Plus it’s much more comfortable on the spin bike:) If you are in Atlanta go see Larissa at Brazilian’s by Andreia at the Buckhead location – she is amazing – and most importantly – gentle!

Nervously waiting for Larissa:

The azaleas are out!

Spring must be here!  The Masters begins next week and our azaleas are out in preparation!  It looks stunning around here with all the cherry blossom too – it’s my favorite time of year here in Atlanta – not too hot, yet good flip flop and t-shirt weather.

I nipped into Target again on the way home from work – still umming and ahhing over the Fedora I tried on the other day.  Today I tried on a pink floppy hat – I love the idea of it – but I think at the very least I need long flowing locks beneath it to really pull it off like Ali MacGraw:)
